Flight hopping up the Queensland coast | Q400 Rockhampton to Townsville via Mackay

- Queensland has one of the most spectacular coastlines in the world. The relatively low cruising altitude of the Q400 means we get to enjoy the scenery in incredible detail.
QantasLink operates a service which hops along the coast from Rockhampton to Cairns via Mackay and Townsville (sometimes called a milk run). In this video we explore the section between Rockhampton and Townsville.
The journey begins in the modern terminal at Rockhampton Airport before boarding a 13-year-old Q400 for the two legs north along the coast. The huge rivers, numerous islands and glorious yet varied colours of the waterways, make for a jaw-dropping journey.
The Q400 is in an all economy layout and this video shows what the economy class experience is like and includes announcements by the cabin crew and from the cockpit.

When i was working i would take 2 weeks of my annual leave to fly to North Queensland from Sydney. It all started in 1965 when i went to Dunk Island for a week and thus started my annual migration to North Queensland. Back then, I had to fly from Sydney to Brisbane, with a 3 hour stop over before flying to Rockhampton, then Mackay and finally Townsville. I had to stay overnight in Townsville before boarding a small 6 seater commuter plane to Dunk Island. Of course, today, you can get there in one day. But i did enjoy the scenery hopping up the Queensland Coast.

What memories... I used to work in ROK for a few years. I worked in the Singapore Air Force so we had deployments to Rocky every year.

Fabulous video as always, beautiful shots! I’ve only been on the final segment of that milk run between cairns and Townsville (which is also gorgeous), good to see the other bits! I used to love flying the QLink 717 Gove to Darwin as well for the views before they left it to Airnorth.

I am curious about these aircraft. They are a turboprop. Isn't that a fancy way of saying that the engine works a lot like a jet engine but is optimised to turn a shaft that then turns a propellor instead of providing thrust via fast and hot exhaust gases exiting the rear. So, why make it turn a propellor rather than jet thrust? Is it more (or less) efficient? Does it have lower maintenance costs? Is it more fuel ewfficient? There has to some reason why these smaller regional aircraft use this kind of propulsion, but what is it?

Great video- Nth Qld is very scenic and well suited to a nice sky cruise. Other gems are :
1. Cairns to Horn Island (Services Thursday Island and usually a Q400) a day return is possible on this as there are two services per day . This actually takes you further north than Cape York (Which is the most northerly part of Australia), the scenery up there is stunning and still minus any significant development,. The airport was built during WW2 and was the most bombed (Next to Darwin) RAF airbase of WW2 by the Japanese.
2. Brisbane- Barcaldine - Longreach- Brisbane daily with a Q400 as well/.
Best time for both is May to Late September , especially in far North Qld as the Monsoon systems provide to much cloud over and rough riding.
Pre Covid they were running a Dash 8 Q 400 from Cairns to Port Moresby (An international Dash 8 route!), hopefully it will return.

Yeah - I think they figure most passengers are doing more than one leg, so with three legs in total (Rockhampton > Mackay; Mackay > Townsville and Townsville > Cairns) they only serve food on the middle leg, which should capture the majority of passengers. ;)

Aren’t there too many buildings and spread for 118000 population? There must be more people in the area, unless city limit is very small and other buildup areas belong to other cities/towns.
According to the latest Census, the population is now 123,000 so has gone up since the previous Census. Those stats are based on Mackay regional council so yes, would include some area surrounding the city.
