Aman is really an incredible teacher of these simple yet very significant principles
It actually amazes me how aman can break down and explain such things so clearly. I mean, its not too hard things to understand, but even if i know during the game if my e5 pawn hanging or not I never actually was able to verbalise why it is not hanging. I never knew such simple two reasons (opponent king is not castled and e4 pawn is not defended), i just always checked if my queen trick works or not or some positions already became so familiar so i didn't even have to calculate
As silly and provocative as some of the CB videos are, I think this is actually the most educational slowclimb series, even more than Rosen/JB/etc. Aman does a great job anticipating (and answering) obvious alternate lines. Arguably that should be to an extent “an exercise for the reader”, but there’s a good balance that is struck here
This is the ruy Lopez explanation we needed in level 4 habits.
Since starting level 4 my ruy looez has sucked and I’ve been struggling with the opening. There isn’t a lot of explanation about it in the habits series so I’m grateful for this.
could you do more videos like this about core concepts of other openings? i feel like so many people your level don't understand that not all of us had chess coaches growing up to tell us the themes and principles, and just teach exact moves(but not why you make them). i really appreciate videos like this.

I love these SlowBrah vids, keep them up Aman! I've always just avoided the Ruy Lopez because it's so well studied, but after absorbing this video I think I may stop evading it. Understanding that center tension is completely understandable for a player at my basic level and seems easily exploitable when I'm playing my fellow n00bs.
what do you mean by "avoided the RL"? Did you choose to avoid Nf6 to avoid facing it, or something else? I switched to 1...e5 more or less a year ago and very happy with this choice overall, but the RL is still my nemesis (and I guess I will face it more and more as my rating and level hopefully increase).
On point. Somehow I never figured all of this out. But it is really simple. For me the memory trick I've now put into my head is to remember that Black can often play Qd4, forking.
Best video yet! I struggle with center pawns… knowing when they’re free and when to take is a mistake, and not exclusively in the Lopez but in general. Any middle game situation where I should feel confident taking a center pawn, and I never take it. Any time I do, it’s always a mistake. And I just don’t know the difference. It’s all very difficult for me to grapple with in my brain (my aural learning skills are just more developed than my visual, I suppose?). Seeing and hearing it are very helpful. I even laughed when Aman said, “I’m so annoyed when I see players hang center pawns,” because I’m exactly that person he’s talking about. Not ashamed to admit I struggle with the concept more than anything else. So, thank you Aman! I’m sure this one was intended for a lot more players than just me, but I honestly feel like you made this one just for me. And I could watch a hundred more like this if you still have enough frustration to keep venting about hanging center pawns. Just take it all out on me. I’m the reason for your frustration, and I apologize for continuing to struggle with this concept over the many years I’ve been following the channel. Keep up the good work you’re doing! Thank you!!!

I played the Ruy lopez when I first started because it was the first youtube opening video I came across and the move order seemed easy to understand, played at least 100 games with it, and ya, I'm guilty of still not understanding these basic principles. So thanks for this little lesson.
Thank you for posting this… it took me years to internalize the idea of how to attack and defend pawns in the first few moves… I’ve watched so many opening videos over the years yet still it took years to even realize that that 1d4 is protected by the queen and 1e4 isn’t protected lol and I would play strong players that would attack me in the opening and I wouldn’t even realize I was being attacked until it was too late lol it’s nice to have it broken down in this way

Even at 1500-1600 level I still win a clean pawn in the opening in most of my ruy games

Another topic similar to this would be when it is safe or good to advance the pawn to E5 in the Kings Indian defense as it always seems like it can be advanced sooner than I usually do it.

When the e pawns are/are not hanging is a very small, albeit non-trivial, aspect of the RL.
“Everything”…or even some small fraction of everything….would take many hours.

What's the definition of "hanging"? I thought is was when an undefended piece can be taken. The definition here sounds like when an undefended piece can be taken without similar retaliation.
If your opponent takes your 'hanging' pawn and you win one of their pawns, a piece, or even a positional advantage in return then they haven't really 'won' anything. So I guess a piece is only *technically* hanging when taking it gives you an advantage. But the general meaning is just a pawn or piece that's undefended.
I'm not a pro though
@@kaalad3666 pretty much my understanding as well. A hang is specifically where an undefended piece can be taken freely, if your opponent can immediately retaliate to you taking a piece resulting in you losing equal or more valuable material than they did this is not a hang, but a piece being lost for a positional advantage would be a sacrifice as i understand it.
500 skill players arent studying grandmaster ruy lopez games though. I'm sure this will help out a lot of newer players.
