Ventrac 4500Y w/ 72" FastCut Flail Mower - Mowing Drainage Basin

The 4500Y in the video is brand new (it had 0.7hrs when we got it and it about 6.5hrs when it went back). We wanted to compare the power difference between the Y and the Z in low to medium power demanding applications like finishing mowing, to high or extreme power demanding applications like mowing with the flail mower in 3ft tall, thick grass on a steep slope. We knew there would be a power difference, but how much was the question. We noticed and expected as hours where put on the tractor, it smoked less under a heavy load and the power increased. The flail mower in our experience is one of the most power hungry attachments that Ventrac currently makes. With that said, the Y handles the flail mower on flat ground quite well, even in 2ft tall, dense grass. Mowing with the flail mower on a slope is where it struggles, 25hp and 42lbft of torque isn't quite enough. All and all, our conclusion is that if your working on hills/slopes frequently, get the Z, if not, the Y will do everything else really quite well, maybe just a hair slower, and I mean just a hair.

That was my thought also. Maybe a time or two brush back the grass to the cut grass underneath 😁. Was through there the other day on my way to Tennessee with rye seed from ND. Thanks for sharing.

That looks like the mower is leaving a matted up mess that is going to kill all the grass underneath. If you run over that again in a day or two, would it pulverize the cut off grass enough to turn it to dust?

The grass has absolutely, NO problem, growing through the cut material. The FastCut flail mower does an AWESOME job in this application.

I think based on this I'd have to go with the fine cut flail, as it looks to have a slightly easier time cutting that.

I've always founderd how you mow grass in the mountains.im like a normal mower whould differently not work in those areas.

@@bretthovey5634 You use your right hand to move the SDLA (Speed, Direction, Lift Auxiliary) lever. There is an option for a foot pedal to control the speed and direction of the machine.
