  • Maybe some people are born with the innate knowledge of how to properly use a grab hook with a chain, what with the lack of videos, articles, and even pictures explaining how. I was not one of those lucky few, so I've used grab hooks incorrectly for years, before finally learning how.
I can't be the ONLY person to not know, so here y'all go!

I was given a tow chain from my Dad a long time ago and I’ve mostly been using it for pulling up stumps and shrubs with my truck. But I always suspected that I was using it wrong. It just didn’t feel right. Thanks to your buzzer... now I know that I WAS doing it wrong. Thanks!

    You da Man!
It wasn't apparent to me how to use them either.
I bought a tow chain and a harbor freight frame puller, but I get the chain home and can't see how to get the grab hook to get a good lock on the chain.
    Thanks!

Put the opening of the hook facing up so if the chain goes slack, it doesn't come out of the hook.

Great Video. I have seen people making the same mistake you outlined at the beginning of the video. Good job.

now tell us when we should use a grab or a slip hook

There are quite a few resources online that discuss the "grab hook" vs "slip hook" question so doing a video on that topic would be redundant. I did this video specifically because I could not find any instructions on HOW to use a grab hook ANYWHERE and figured that I can't be alone in that.

Great video thanks for posting. I have a couple of chains with grab hooks and I had no idea how I was going to get them to work. Very helpful!

Isn't the hook supposed to go on the non-welded side of the link??

Hmmm... I've never heard that one side of a chain link is stronger or weaker than the other. Where can I learn more about that?
