Hi Joanna, I just found your channel today. Thank you for the recipes. I’m definitely going to make the Salmon, as I don’t have canning pots etc. Would you please share your exact feeding schedule for your cats? Do you only feed them one main meal a day like you showed in this video? Do they get hungry later and how much do you give them in the way of kibble or treats? I’m trying to get my 2 - 1 1/2 year old Cats onto a regular schedule with enough calories yet not too much per day. Thank you. I love that you have 6 Cats. I’d have six or more if I could. 😊😊
Hi! Thanks for watching and commenting! I’m actually up to 13 cats right now, and they all have the same schedule. An adult cat should be consuming about 250-300 calories per day. I feed them their main meal in the morning as that works for me with most of those calories split between kibble (always check caloric density if you change brands) and wet food. I then use kibble in the evening as a snack, giving generally a 1/4 of what I feed in the morning. As my cats spend most of their time outside, I adjust for weather. As it gets colder, I feed them more.
Joanna, what type of dry kibble do you use and do you actually can the wet food, as I don't know how to can. Willing to learn though LOL! Also, can you feed cats just the wet food or do you have to do dry as well. I only do dry now (Prescription urinary) and occasionally a treat of wet food, but we have 20 cats so it gets hard.
Wow! That is a huge crew! I would try a batch and do a 1/4 wet to dry combo to see how your cats do. If they do well for a couple of weeks, I would up it to 50%. I use whatever dry I can get, as supplies are spotty where I am, but the homemade wet has made a big difference in urinary health (this food won’t help with uric acid stones, though). Cats are notoriously difficult to transition to new food, so the gradual is better. With so many cats a 1/2 batch should be enough to test. I have a video on freezer storage, but I haven’t filmed canning. I do both. Also, my Turkey videos have more tips that may help you out! Thanks for watching, Joanna
Thank you Joanna! I sent a couple more questions in some other places. I am sure you will get to those. I can’t remember which video I sent them to!LOL!! Thank you so much! Love your videos❤️

My cats have been enjoying it for the last few years. I alternate between the chicken and Turkey with continuing success! Thank you for watching, and best of success to you, Joanna
They absolutely do. I have a couple of cats that eat a touch more slowly than the others, but all of them know there is another cat willing and waiting to finish their food for them, and if any is left after that, I have two dogs that are more than willing to lick everything clean once the cats have abandoned their spots (my cats absolutely refuse to be bossed around by mere canines.) I give them dry food as snacks later in the day, but even then, they don't graze. The only exception I've had is when I've had a queen and weening kittens. When she was heavily pregnant and nursing, she and then she and her kittens were sequestered from the other cats and I constantly had dry food available along with wet multiple times a day. I then fed the weened kittens separately from the adult cats so I could feed them smaller portions multiple times a day. Right now I have 14 adult cats that are all on the same schedule. Thanks for watching, Joanna
It varies. I rotate between a few of the less expensive options that are available locally, but I stick to the basic blends. No fish flavors, mostly because I don’t think these cats that I have here have ever seen a fish, much less caught one and ate one. Thanks for watching, Joanna
I have a couple that usually end up with the uppermost steps (they are slow) and a couple that absolutely race for the lowest step, but they seem pretty comfortable as long as they end up with their own food bowl!
So, interestingly, some yes, but others no. I have a younger cat that isn't in this video who always goes to the top step, and in fact, if another cat takes his spot, he eats his food one bite at a time, but running up above the cats each time he takes a bite (at least until someone moves his bowl. For the other cats, it is a race for the nearest bowl. Thanks for watching, Joanna
I understand the challenges. I feed my cats whatever dry food I can get. They got over a lot of their pickiness during covid when I couldn't consistently procure one brand of food. The wet food helps with continuity as far as I can tell. Thanks for watching, Joanna
Great idea re: the steps. If I had steps in my home, would prob use your guide, but my stairs are to the finished basement, so not good. I feed my cats in the livingroom and a master bedroom. I always tell them let's eat where I was never allowed to, lol! I will look into your recipe more re: homemade cat food. I thought cats are NOT allowed to eat turkey or chicken skin? I never give them the skin. Can u just use split chicken breast? Or chicken breast filets? The dark meat is better, so thighs/legs. I prefer to cooking the food too. Not 100% on board w/RAW food. Didnt try it yet, kind of weirded out alittle. My cats eat wet food for lunch, 3pm dry food or freeze dried treats. Nighttime, dry food. I noticed that my cats drink like crazy when eating dry food. I want to give wet at least 2x a week and would be good to make homemade, think it would be cheaper. Do u have to add in taurine & other vitamins?
Hi Debbie, as pet owners/parents we definitely have to figure out what works for the entire crew! The stairs work for us, but I can see why you don't want them in a finished basement. Taurine and other supplements aren't required with the turkey recipe or the dark meat chicken, but if you chose to use breast meat, you will definitely need to supplement taurine. This recipe is certainly more cost-effective than canned cat food, and you know the ingredients because you added them as you cooked them. The main risk with raw is cross-contamination or even direct food-born pathogen transmission for feline and human residents of the home. The argument that taurine is degraded significantly during the cooking process is simply invalid at the temperatures used according to studies conducted in the last couple of years. I use whatever skin is included with the meat I'm cooking, but I don't add extra skin to their food, however, my cats aren't obese. Lots of considerations! Best of success with your cats! Thanks for watching, Joanna
Great question! I have used a couple of options. I currently pressure can my cat food, and I show this in my newest video, but I also have frozen the food with great success. I have a video on this as well. Hope that helps, Joanna
I don't know about you but my cats drink water all the time I watch them they're always drinking water but they do have wet food and but I just give them how much they want I need to stop doing that I need to fight them the regular feeding schedule and since I pee so much darn canned food I think I'm going to try doing this
Hi Liz. Thanks for the question. I have other questions that would play as well. What is taurine and where does it come from? What produces it? Is there any in chicken already? How much is needed for cats? Does cooking "cook" it off? Who should we listen to? Thanks for watching! Joanna
Wow. I only have 2 cats. One I found in the middle of the road as a kitten- about 6 years ago. The other is a 1 year old stray that wouldn't leave my front porch about 4 months ago. Both females... And they hate eachother. I have tried everything to get them to get along, but it is just constant growling, hissing, and fighting. Both are sweethearts... Just not when they are in the same room. The stray likes to sneak attack my established one. It is to the point my established one hides in the closet. She never did that before. 😢 But... no one will take the stray, so they will just have to deal. I thought getting the stray fixed would help, but it didn't. If anyone has any tricks up their sleeve, let me know. I tried sharing their scents and even leaving them in the same room to work out their problems. I am at a loss. I need a cat whisperer.❤
Oh goodness. Sounds like your first cat has fully bonded with you and has zero interest in a new friend and your new cat wants the same thing. Do they have separate litter boxes? That has helped us when there is a conflict. Our cats have basically just shown up over the few years, and they squabble, but have managed to settle in. Thanks for watching, Joanna
I have 2 spayed females myself and 3 male feral cats eat on my front steps. When they eat together, they growl at each other.I told them "No fightinh on My porch or no food for you young man and luckily they hve never fought again out here. Be stern! You are the boss! Your way or the highway!!!
I have a couple that try to run around and steal the chicken off of as many bowls as possible, but in general the wet food is gone in seconds, and the dry food lasts at most 5 more minutes. They know if they don't eat it, one of the other cats will. Occasionally one of them will leave a kibble or two for another cat or our dogs to clean up. They crack me up. Thanks for watching, Joanna
Mine is the same. Then again mine is 18 years old. I feed her more than once a day, she's more of a nibbler and then leaves the rest, which if dried out she wont touch. So a couple of small meals is better for her and less wasteful. Sometimes if she's really not eating well, she's had thyroid problems, now mostly solved, I put her first feed on the deck, she gulps that down quicker because she thinks other animals may eat it. Whatever to keep her weight up.
It is most of their calories for the day. I based the serving on the caloric recommendation for indoor, neutered/spayed adult cats. Later in the day I give them light "snacks" of dry cat food that I scatter on the floor for them to hunt for.
If that's code for "Great video on homemade cat food with turkey" or "I can't wait to see the full step-by-step video on the turkey cat food", then GREAT! Thank you! The full video is processing now and should be up in the next 24 hours (or now if you're not seeing this comment on the published date). Thank you, either way! Joanna
No offense, but that dry cat food doesn’t look like the healthiest. Usually it’s the cheaper brands that use the food dyes. Just wondering why you’d go through all this work to make healthy wet food and use not so great kibble? Costco has some pretty decent dry foods that are well priced.
As I live two hours from the nearest Costco, even if I had a membership, their pet foods are not readily available where I live. I feed my cats with the kibble I can source in my rural area and mix it with the homemade food that I am confident of the quality. In any case, it sounds like you have found a solution that works for you! Thanks for watching, Joanna
@@JoannaTrautman haha! You can see they love that stuff! The stair dining is genius ! I read somewhere that cats don't like their water beside their food. Thought I would test that. Yes, Miss Picky, drinks the water when it's on the other wall, but not when it's beside her food. My cat actually drinks quite a bit of water. I have a 2 cup, glass measuring cup in my office, which I put on the table for her. She loves the water from the bathroom sink, I think it's because it's very aerated. Anyway I refresh that water daily and I can clearly see how much she drinks, because It's in a measuring cup. She drinks at least a cup of water a day, plus wet food and dry. I'm good with that . She is going onto 18 years. Sadly, I lost her sister to cancer in 2020.
Of course, cats need water just like humans and dogs 😅Cats do not drink dirty water. You probably don't have time to give 9 cats fresh water 3-4 times a day
Your heavy reliance on dry food is still bad for their health. Rice is also high carb and thus unnatural. Much better is to give them mainly meat. Mine have been on the Nutriment brand of raw meat for 2 years and their health and coats have much improved.

I give them dry food as snacks later in the day, but even then, they don't graze.
Do you ever heat up small portions of the wet food to serve so it's not cold or does it not matter for digestion or taste preferences?
You certainly can heat it up, but I don't, and my cats show no preference. Thanks for watching, Joanna
LOVE your video thank you SO much
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for watching, Joanna
How do you make the turkey cat food? I'm trying to get mine to eat. Thanks!
I have 2 videos on it (part 1 & 2) on my channel. They go very in depth. Thanks for watching, Joanna
Wow thats so amazing!!!!!!❤❤❤
Thank you!
I tried this and my cats are brats, they wouldn't eat it! Lol yours are trained well!!!! I love it!!!
@@angieramirez_setapart aw man! Did you try mixing it in with their preferred food and gradually introducing it? Some cats respond better to that.
I did haha but they wouldn't touch it all day so I had to go back to a new fresh bowl of their dry food☺️
@@angieramirez_setapart oh man!!!!!
How much percent of lean and fat should I buy of ground beef or turkey for my cat I do cook it
Those cats love food 😂❤ they are eating good!
They love it 🥰
Please give me how much rice amount, and how do I grind the flex seed with no machine ?❓❓
So did you just throw the dry food on the floor?
What brand dry food do you use?
It varies. I rotate between a few of the less expensive options that are available locally, but I stick to the basic blends. No fish flavors, mostly because I don’t think these cats that I have here have ever seen a fish, much less caught one and ate one. Thanks for watching, Joanna
@@JoannaTrautman Thank you
I am going to try this
Do they always go to the same step, or is random most times? I'm curious lol.
I have a couple that usually end up with the uppermost steps (they are slow) and a couple that absolutely race for the lowest step, but they seem pretty comfortable as long as they end up with their own food bowl!
Do u have other cat food recipes that can be prepared at home
How many times you feed you cats???
I feed my cats a full meal once per day, but they have dry food "snacks" in the evening. Joanna
Do they go to same spot on stairs always.
Omggg they're adorable😍
i only have 6 and problematic is addressing their idiosyncrasies. what kind of dry food do you feed them?
I understand the challenges. I feed my cats whatever dry food I can get. They got over a lot of their pickiness during covid when I couldn't consistently procure one brand of food. The wet food helps with continuity as far as I can tell. Thanks for watching, Joanna
Would you recommend this for cats with sensitive stomachs? Most things give my cats the runs unfortunately.
Poor baby! You could try it, but in a small quantity gradually introduced with a food that your cat tolerates well.
Thanks for watching, Joanna
how do you store your premade food? thanks
Great question! I have used a couple of options. I currently pressure can my cat food, and I show this in my newest video, but I also have frozen the food with great success. I have a video on this as well. Hope that helps, Joanna
What kind of dry food do you use?
At this point, I use whatever I can acquire! Pickings are often slim, unfortunately. Thanks for watching, Joanna
I would like I be canning instructions. We have 3 kitties.
I don't know about you but my cats drink water all the time I watch them they're always drinking water but they do have wet food and but I just give them how much they want I need to stop doing that I need to fight them the regular feeding schedule and since I pee so much darn canned food I think I'm going to try doing this
Love that your cats are hydrated! Best of success with your feline crew, and thanks for watching, Joanna
lookout for kidney issues ours had excessive thirst if you catch it early it may be maintainable
They have to bend their heads under a bit. Put the bowls more away from the inside of the step.
Good cat momma
Thanks for watching! Joanna
Did you add taurine??? Essential…
But... no one will take the stray, so they will just have to deal.
Shame man...I just know that cats are very territorial....cat whisperer is what u need... hope you come right
I have 2 spayed females myself and 3 male feral cats eat on my front steps. When they eat together, they growl at each other.I told them "No fightinh on My porch or no food for you young man and luckily they hve never fought again out here. Be stern! You are the boss! Your way or the highway!!!
Many don't think about this fact, but to all as the cats become adults some start getting bad teeth and dry food hurts. Wet food best for adults.. 🌷
Are they outside cats? Or they all indoor cats?
This crew is indoors - our closest neighbors are a few coyote families, a wolf, and a bear! Thanks for watching, Joanna
My cats never got on my counter tops !
That’s a lot of food for one meal.
My cats have the bulk of their daily food in this meal, and then have snacks later in the day. Thanks for watching, Joanna
My cats eat like this too. The kibble lasts for days but the wet food is gone in seconds
I have 1 cat, and he eats nowhere near as much as that. He's absolutely, wayyy too finicky😢
He didn't have a real mom growing up, but I did my best.
Wait you have a few steps that nned to be filled.. lol..lol..lol..need more cats..
That's a lot of food for one serving.
It is most of their calories for the day. I based the serving on the caloric recommendation for indoor, neutered/spayed adult cats. Later in the day I give them light "snacks" of dry cat food that I scatter on the floor for them to hunt for.
3:40 that seems like an awful lot of calories for a cat, no?
My cats eat around 300 kcal per day, recommended by the National Academy of Sciences.
@@JoannaTrautman Do you have a source for that so I can guage how much my cats eat?
Metals a good choice. They can get something called cat acne on their chin , and itches them horribly
I thought it was chicken?
This video is of my turkey cat food recipe. 😻

Joanna
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😍🤣
Our cats don't eat anywhere near that much food at one time.
Clearly they hate it! 😹😹😹
Ha! They still stampede me every day at chow time. Joanna
@@JoannaTrautman haha! You can see they love that stuff! The stair dining is genius ! Ive got mine lined up against the kitchen and dining room walls and they tend to nose each other out of their dishes…the steps give necessary separation. I’ve got my list of ingredients ready and will be heading to the market tomorrow for my first batch. I’ve got 13 cats and not only is it costing me a fortune to feed commercial canned Origen and Acana, but they need BETTER…especially my senior cats. Thank you for providing us with the recipe! ♥♥♥
Kibble is very unhealthy for cats as you pointed out cats do not drink much water
This is true, but my cats seem to do fine with a combo of kibble and homemade wet food.
You probably don't have time to give 9 cats fresh water 3-4 times a day
I think ur great it's that it just seems like u make WAY to much mess/work .... Freaks me out
If they gain weight, you should cut back on the DRY FOOD not the WET FOOD.
Your heavy reliance on dry food is still bad for their health. Rice is also high carb and thus unnatural.
Much better is to give them mainly meat. Mine have been on the Nutriment brand of raw meat for 2 years and their health and coats have much improved.
