Also a tax manager at a Big 4 here🙌🏻 i would say that I agree with points 1 & 2. Point 3 to me isn’t much different for audit & tax since I do corporate tax for a lot of my firm’s audit clients as well. Point 4 to me is yes and no since the audit team a lot of times subcontracts tax provision review to the tax team and in that case we look at materiality as well. For point 5, I just think both audit and tax aren’t likely to be replaced by AI, at least, in the near future 😅 Overall, I think I’ve been able to survive in Big 4 for 7 years coz I work in tax and the working hours are shorter than audit. But then, please note beforehand that when you are in tax, your exit opportunities will be limited. Only the big MNCs have dedicated tax manager roles so you can imagine that there won’t be a lot of job openings in the market. I’ve known WAY TOO MANY people working in Big 4 tax only because they still haven’t got the opportunity to go commercial yet.
I was freaking out because of what I keep reading about big4 busy season but nothing too specific! But thank you for this! I chose Tax over Audit and I’m honestly excited
I’m in industry and I agree with working hours and busy season with audit, month-end and year-end. I accidentally landed in a job that gave me a taste of management/financial accounting and tax but it’s now 100% tax and I freaking love it! It does get stressful with multiple monthly deadlines but they are short lived.
@@Grain-h7ustill going great! highly recommend tax > audit if you like less teamwork and more independence (there’s still team work but just not as much as audit)
Hi Gabrielle, thanks so much for sharing. I'm already starting my career in Tax (Big 4 also) but lately I was thinking of pursuing audit. I think I'm staying in Tax after watching your video 😂
Overtime gets you to the hour requirements faster for your CPA certification. I’d personally just get my CPA cert and gtfo out of the big 4 and never look back
Your videos are so inspiring! I plan on becoming a Tax Associate and was nervous about the exit options (in comparison to audit). Do you plan on becoming a controller? Also may you please do a video about conventional and unconventional tax accountant exit options? I’ve been doing research online but hearing it from a verifiable professional is as good as it gets. Keep doing what you’re doing!!!
I totally agree that technology will improve the accounting field due to work being produced more efficiently. I like the idea of being able to have my own workspace. I can’t wait to take tax and experience it myself hopefully through an internship to see if it’s something I want to do 😁
Thank you very much for providing this valuable information. Q1 Can you please tell which is a better place to work in Canada Big 4, mid tier firms or small accounting firms? Q2) Can you please also tell which is the best province to work in Canada in Tax ( pay, work life balance) Thank you
Could you please make a video training about what kind of tasks you have to accomplish on most of the time at work. Kind reading reports, or producing reports. Etc
Sorry I realised I wrote everything wrong.. I meant showing the task you do the most.. like how your time is devided.. move time reading, or communicating by email or meetings or producing reports.. I'm trying to visualize how I would like it.. i like producing rapports and the communication part of my job.. but not that much reading long documents.
Toward the end of the video, you mention that you do not think IT will ever replace the need for tax accountants. Do you still feel the same way the recent developments of AI?
hehehe spent the past days binge watching your videos! They are very helpful! Can you make a video about utilization vs. efficiency? Like how utilization is measured at big4?
Hey great content! I just got an internship at Deloitte in Global Mobility Tax, UK. Ive found some of your content really helpful throughout the interview and recruitment process. Any advice on how best to prepare or what to expect?
Hi Gabrielle, cool video! Thank you so much for that! Please, could you tell me if it is possible to join Big4 Tax team after being in Information technology industry? I actually have been working for Global Tax Team in IT company and really want to move to Big 4 and later I can see my future in Tax Advisory role - Would you recommend what to do to be accepted by Big4?
Hey Gabrielle! I just found your channel and I am so grateful for all the info ☺️ I am currently studying both law and accounting (specializing in tax and audit) and I’m leaning towards working in tax. Since you work in tax consulting, do you interact with a lot of tax law? I’ve been told that there’s a difference between what tax lawyers and tax consultants do, would that be accurate? Is it possible to get a job in tax that would make use of both my legal and accounting knowledge? Thank you for sharing your experience!
@@scarlettc8566 Hello Scarlett, sorry for responding to your message so late (I actually didn’t see it in my notifications until today). But this was Gabrielle’s response to my question: “ I briefly talk about tax lawyers in my video Why I Chose Tax, but the main difference is that lawyers can go to court if clients have a dispute with CRA or IRS. As a Tax Accountant, I definitely read the tax act everyday, especially if you're writing a tax memo for the client. Hope that helps! “

Hi, your channel is very good, congratulations. I intend to study an undergraduate degree in International Taxation in Germany (I am already accepted), the only doubt I have is regarding my age, since I am 37 years old, then I would like to know if that could play against me when I start working, since I would finish at 40. I would like to work in one of the Big Four, but I don't know if I have chances because of my age. I would appreciate any comments. Greetings!!!

I’m applying for a transfer pricing graduate program and Idk how I feel about that. I worry that maybe it isn’t a good idea to start off doing something specific you know? That maybe doing general corporate taxation would be better for me. What do you think? Do you believe that starting off at transfer pricing is a good kick start for a career in tax accounting??
I would say transfer pricing is specific but has lots of global mobility. General corporate tax is also good if you aren't clear what area of tax you want to pursue. I think it ultimately comes down to doing your research and where you see yourself in the future!
