Training a dog thats never been exposed to the outside world is the toughest thing in the world to do. Dogs like that need encouragement just to do normal things, like eating and drinking from a bowl, interacting with humans and other dogs, going up and down stairs, even sleeping.
It is not easy, but it's the only way your dog will learn to trust you. I nearly cried the first time my rescue terrier didn't jump at my outstretched hand to let me pet her. She had a history of abuse and neglect, which made the first few months incredibly stressful because progress was very slow. By the end of her life, she had been the sweetest natured dog I've ever owned. She would run right up to me when I got home every single day. It's the moments and memories like that you look forward to with rescues. They will never go away.
@Deepestdrip i apologize if you saw my comment as being ignorant to their situation or anyone who is going through the same thing. it's for mere banter :) but i am very glad that rescue dogs like bunny and yours get to have the love and encouragement from their owner that they needed and deserved. i'm sure wherever your dog is, they're very happy and thankful that they had an owner like you.
@bee1zebop You're good lol. I'm just very emotional about dogs and rescues in particular. Mine unfortunately was diagnosed with a rare and lethal foodborne illness at only 9 years old. She passed away in my arms at the clinic about a year and a half ago. Way too young. I had to leave work early. It was a hard day. I cried for a few hours. I still have my 15 and a half year old toy poodle though, who might just outlive everyone in the family at this rate. But still, the hole in my heart will always be there.

Positive reinforcement has been proven to work time and time again. Negative reinforcement? Not so much. She went from being terrified of stairs to flying down them ready to play with her siblings and go swimming. She's improved so much its mindblowingly wholesome
