GOD DAMMIT!! I mean, I don't know what else to say. DeJohnette is just so badass. Back when I was studying all the time I'd transcribe Elvin, Roy Haynes, Philly, Paul Motian, etc. with relative ease. But Dejohnette, no way. There's just no figuring out what he's doing most of the time (for me anyway). I actually got through the first chorus or so of the studio version of this tune before I gave up. Crazy stuff. Love that line up!

Not really. It is a tribute to Osby and to the composer of "EzzThetic", George Russell, who came up with the only truly original, complete music theory - The Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization - which has been very influential on many improvisers. It may sound atonal, but it is neither tonal nor atonal, precisely - The Lydian theory is quite involved, and you might get a kick out of researching George Russell.
