UPDATE: At our last July meeting, the HPC board voted to pursue landmarking the Ice House. It will take research and documentation to complete the application. We are very excited to work (as unpaid volunteers) with the City of Lee's Summit to make the preservation of the ICE HOUSE a reality.
UPDATE: We must save the Ice House from being demolished due to a high rehabilitation price tag. At the April 18 Meeting of the Historic Preservation Commission, we continued the discussion of the Ice House-Structural and Architectural Report Update with GLMV Architecture. The building suffered decades of deferred maintenance. The estimated cost to rehabilitate the Ice House ranges between $ 1,706 M and $ 3,400 M before any tax credit. The combined Federal and State tax credits amounts to 35% for approved restoration by the Secretary of the Interior. The I. H. must be listed on the National Listing of Historic Places to qualify for the tax credits. The City of LS and any not for profit organizations cannot be the recipient of tose tax credits. Only a tenant, leaser or buyer of the I.H could receive the tax credits. The situation is complex, though, one must see beyond the dollar signs that this building is a true legacy of the people who build the original Lee's Summit. Furthermore, as Ms Kathy Smith sais, the building is unique and important to the history of Lee's Summit.
