Finally I could see this Weston documentary which eluded me for years! I read about the existence of this Willard Van Dyke film but I thought it was lost. On 1970 I came across his modest home at Wildcat Hill after visiting Ansel Adams at his Carmel home. More than a photographer he was the founder of a new way of seeing. His "peppers", "excusados", "shells and "nudes" reveal an extraordinary visual perception of the real world. Genius is an appropriate word in his case. Thank you so much for this experience...
So glad you found it. I live just a few miles from where they were.
I really love the large camera view! "Not here, not here, but here is a thing of beauty" - with the movement, as well as aperture value comparison with doors and the rock or filter on the sky. Nowadays we got used to those but I really admire execution back then.
Yes so true!
Thanks for continuing this series. Another excellent video.
Thanks for watching Bill.
My father got his own 8 x 10 camera when his was my age. Now I'm researching photographers to get inspiration to go shoot my own 8x10 film
🙌
I'm really happy to bring you the next part of the Weston film. He was a major influence for my photogahy, how about you?
Adams and Weston... yep probably my 2 biggest inspirations in black & white photography. Adams for his scientfic approach towards photography (zone system etc), and Weston for the composition.
Used this in my Art Presentation for school about him :)
To make the image sharp from front to back not only is achieved by closing the diaphragm down but moving the lens board first then moving the diaphragm smaller.
👍
I had read about him while in college, seen some of his work, but i've never seen video of him. thanks for sharing. 👍👍
Yes great to make this footage available to the community. Thanks for watching
What year was this movie produced?
Behind every great photographer theres a great Woman..🕺🏼
Or in Edward's case a lot of great women.
Wow. The voice-over is a guy who did literally hundreds of educational movies in the 50s and 60s.
Takes me back to elementary school.
Haha yes indeed he has the that familiar voice
Mel Brandt.
Great!
Once you suffer through the overblown narration and unnessessary dramatic strings in the background its a great watch :-)
To really get an idea of the man read his daybooks.
Iconic
Is his assistant Tina Modotti in this film.
she worked with him, but she's no the one in the film, we need to research it a bit to find her name.
@@marcsilber Dody.
If i had to take this big camera i wouldn't be a photographer, I would have become a painter instead
Those were the tools of the day and still are.
Is the woman in this film Charis Wilson?
no it's one of his assistants though. Charis was his model and lover
I do not understand how those skinny tripod legs (apparently with spiked feet) didn't sink into the sand dunes.
Good point! I’ll ask his grandson
Who is the lady?
She was Weston’s assistant
@@marcsilber Does she have a name? Did she go on having her own career?
I think one possible name is Doty Weston Thompson. She was born in 1923 so she would have been 25 years old when the film was made. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dody_Weston_Thompson
Thanks that sounds right
@@rlpnuncius Yes.
Edward Weston > The Other Dawggs
🐶
Th bulky camera!
I think you can see Weston’s Parkinson’s disease slowing his motions in this footage.
Sad thing.
