This guy has always been one of my big league favorites. His business determination is so well thought out . It continues to keep him extremely busy and on top of things. A charming young fellow who is definitely Irish. He rides so smooth , you can tell the horses respect him and his judgement.. This guy really lives the life.
You have to be one of my favorite riders of all time. Your incredible way of teaching directly to horse and rider is obvious. Also your an tremendously savvy business person traveling from place to place making sure your asset of the top horses in your care are witnessed by all. Keep up the wonderful work as we enjoy your display of great horsanship.
With regards to all of the people commenting here on this lovely rider's weight: You may say whatever you want, it's your right to do so and I'll defend that right (thank Voltaire by way of Hall), but I must politely disagree with this assertion and I believe that it's misguided to suggest that he's overweight as he clearly does not look that way. Body types vary and having a particular body type does not automatically make one overweight. Not everyone is capable of obtaining whatever the current visual ideal happens to be and despite that, they may be in fine shape for their type and most importantly healthy. No, he's not as skinny as some of the other riders, but what of it? Pointing that out by way of suggesting that he needs to "lose a few pounds" doesn't make it true and others suggesting that the horses are somehow suffering because of it is just misinformed. I'm not even going to get into the science of how much weight a horse can carry on the flat or jumping as it is already well documented. I will say that he has light hands and is quiet in the saddle and that's far more important than a few pounds +/-. This becomes petty when it is clearly not having an impact on the horses or the quality of his riding and this kind of treatment towards fellow equestrians is just another reason that people get the impression that riders are snobbish and snarky. It's sad that we can't just support each other and refrain from these jabs which serve to tear others down.
YouMightChangeMyMind I was just about to say something after seeing him on the horse and that is I hope the horse won’t be breaking down earlier then expected because this lovely man is not overweight but just too darn big to be riding this wonderful horse.
YouMightChangeMyMind the fact that he is too big for the horse and might cause the horse to break down sooner rather then later is just (and although you don’t want to discuss it) plain common sense. He seems to be a wonderful kind of guy, polite and friendly and extremely talented. Perhaps a larger horse might be more suited for his body type.
Ah but as much I like this irish guy in all that he shares of his horses , teachings and grand prix showing I have always thought he sometimes looks to big for the size of the horses he rides. And then you watch him hop aboard these horses , reins them over these high fences with A clear round , jumps off, hands the reins to his grooms , boards a private jet and he's off to another beautiful place riding the same sized equine over those enormous obstacles with no problem to the horses stride or seat. I think he's always been on the beefy side and still doing great. For us seemingly overweight equestrian guys, it's called being beefy and big boned. But who's perfect ?
heyo! I am still learning with this stuff even after four years of riding, but I jump in a simple martingale. at 1:19 the horse can't really extend his neck because he has some contraption holding him behind the bit. I know this may stop him from holding his head too high, but wouldn't that put a strain? Thanks!
Hey Isabelle! This is a great question. In this video, Cian O'Connor is riding in a running martingale. The purpose of all martingales are to discourage the horse from putting their head up beyond the point of the bit working correctly in their mouth. The martingale should never restrict the horse's natural movement of cantering or jumping. Running martingale's specifically are attached to the reins vs the bridle, and will typically move with the horse instead of being a harsh stopping point.
I really hope he doesn’t read theses comments because some of you are so rude. Like for how would you feel if someone told you to loose weight, besides he isn’t even overweight so please just be quiet and have some manners!
Rasha I’m not entirely sure but I’d say to boost his own business, so he could say he’s the vet of an Olympic gold medalist and the horse won while he was caring for it. Edit: I asked my father about it and he said the vet apparently did it by accident...
ROB AND DIVO Some people drug horses. Not defending what happened, but not all drugs are bad. Some are used to keep active horses less active and more calm/relaxed. I know a few stallions that have to be drugged before class cause they act up if they’re not.
Becca Mc Carthy but knowing how important it is not to drug a horse, especially with certain meds, it’s hard to believe he didn’t know but truthfully, I don’t know, maybe it’s something totally innocent but if that’s true he should set the record straight.
Those kids at the end are so disrespectful. They were really rude and poor mannered. If someone was interviewing me and these kids were dabbing in the back then I would've asked them to stop right away. Not trying to be mean or rude.
Geeze, it's a lot of stress for that horse landing on it's front two feet with that rider on its back. (Or any rider) I guess they just upgrade it when it begins to break down. Sad.
Have you ever seen horses in the wild jumping over huge fences? Do you think they like doing that? Just wondering if people ever even thought about it. 1200lbs landing on 2 thin front legs. Can’t imagine.
God if they didn't enjoy their jobs they wouldn't be at that level, it's very difficult to get a horse up the levels if they aren't happy and confident. He isn't scaring his horses over fences, their horses look happy and impeccably well looked after. those types of horses are bred for their job and if they didn't enjoy it they would be at the Grand Prix level. Horses in the wild are also put under a lot more physical stress. I have worked with previously wild horses and they have much more physical stress on their joints and muscles than your average sport horse...
Have you never heard of Snowman and his rider? That horse set the high jump record and competed at high levels for years. A horse rescued from slaughter, whom continuously returned to his owner and rider and competed at his best for him. You can't honestly say that Snowman, and horses like him don't enjoy what they do. There's a great documentary on him on RUclips.
not only is this video interesting but it's also super aesthetically pleasing i LOVE IT

At 5:46 you can hear someone in the audience say “aaah not that talented” honestly some ppl like c’monnnn
Ikr people have no idea
I’m not sure if they are actually talking about him tho. People have other conversations at shows all the time it could be taken out of context

Incredibly proud of him considering he started at the basics at my own stables :)))))
i love these videos and seeing a glimps of the day in a life of a top rider!
Loved the videos of a day, please continue doing this.
Charlotte van Nifterick o

@@gaelcrane8008 hi
Ann Toal hi Ann!
Gael Crane too big for the first horse he was riding? I think not
Please do more of these!!
Thank You for uploading.
I like the buck his horse did at the end of the last jump.
Awesome video! Does anyone know the song titles used in this video? I used Shazam but had no luck with that route...
Lol, why are there two comments telling him to lose weight? He isn't even overweight. XD

I love Noelle Floyd! Do more "Day in the Life" videos!!!
he rides with the tip of his toes in the stirrup.. id love my stirrup if i rode like that!! hats off to you Cian!
Shame that he hasn’t been choice to compete in RIO, awesome video ;)
What Programme do you use to edit these videos?
Super rider!!!
Wow, that horse at 18:00 , what a live wire!
what bit setup does he have on his horse at 15.04?
Lauren Mcinerney yep it's called a hackabit lol, hackamore+bit

@@NOELLE_FLOYD Awesome! Thanks so much for the clarification! Love your channel!!
he is a horsemenship!!
What does he say he takes to 'calm his stomach' before entering the ring? I'd be interested to know :')

это очень вдохновляющее видео

What did he say he takes before a class to calm his stomach? X
tums
+Paige Campion thanks!
Tums before going in the ring? LOL!
that horse at 9:23 was really drooling and spitting... you can't shut your horses mouth with a flash like that
Maddy Hannah Horse is foaming. Which is a good sign in horses. Also his hands were pretty soft, so what are you talking about lmao?
Who was that German speaking man at 11:30?
I don't know but I've noticed that too.
He shouldn’t be riding anymore since he got gold in the Olympics and it turned out he drugged the horse and I’m Irish ☘️
Also Irish here, he didn't drug the horse the vet did. Cian had no knowledge of it it was proven in court
Becca Mc Carthy but why would the vet want the horse to win ?
Rasha I’m not entirely sure but I’d say to boost his own business, so he could say he’s the vet of an Olympic gold medalist and the horse won while he was caring for it.

What is his job ? Is it just a showjumper
I'm surprised they jump these high jumps on grass.. Fast speed and tight turns, a horse can slip on grass and fall with their shoes.
Out Of Time Horses who compete on grass usually have studs on their shoes so they wouldn't slip
WOAH wtf the horse's tongue at 0:39
Jasinta Hehe yeah, usually horses stick out their toungs sometimes
Those kids at the end are so disrespectful. They were really rude and poor mannered. If someone was interviewing me and these kids were dabbing in the back then I would've asked them to stop right away. Not trying to be mean or rude.

Nikki Walker's horse has the tongue out. Look at that bit. Not that great, frankly.

Demonicsnow H. I saw that, it was so good.
Sidilicious, it's a really good example of what a solid bond between horse and rider can achieve.
crank up those draw reins a little more, would you..... said no one ever
Should loose a few pounds..
Why does it matter?? He rode beautifully
Cause it's not like he's one of the best riders out there... I think he is in really good shape, considering the level of performance he is at.
Gabriel Johannessen get to the olympics and then you can talk 👍👍
Gabriel Johannessen horses can comfortably carry 20% of their bodyweight. I highly doubt he's even close to that
He isn't even overweight?
Feel bad for the horse who has to jump with all that weight on it's back. He should definitely lose weight.
Alexandra Addington if thats What u think is "fat" check your eyes😊
lmfao get to his level of riding and then you can talk.
dude he ain't even fat. He's the healthy weight for a man his age and height.
Alexandra Addington
This line of attack is disturbing. Cian isn't overweight, and he's really talented. Is this what George Morris has taught you?
He’s not big but clearly the horses don’t mind it when they go out and jump amazingly for him and have even gotten Olympic medals with him 😊
