  • In this video, I want to show you why you should ALMOST NEVER buy a driver off the rack with the stock shaft. I put the "stock" HZRDUS shaft from the Srixon ZX7 Mkii up against two Lin-Q shafts from UST Mamiya

Do you use a UST Mamiya shaft?

I did use the UST Pro Force Gold shaft in my Titleist 975D driver. I still have it. I would love to hang it on the wall with my other Titleist drivers.

I bought mine used. Titleist Tsi3 with a Tensei 1k Black shaft. I wanted to get fit but the prices just were not something I could afford at the time. With the help of my Mevo+ launch monitor I basically fit myself. I had a 10* and hit it good but it would float and spin at times. Tried different shafts and it was better but I bought an 8* head and found that to work sooooo much better and consistent. The main factor for buying a used Titleist was the fact I've always palyed them so I knew what I was getting. I had tried a Sim 2 but the numbers were the same as my 909 D3. Shafts are relatively cheap in the second hand market that it's fairly easy to buy a shaft give it a go and unload it if you don't like it. The Tensei 1K Black was a brand new shaft for the Tsr model. I do plan in the near future to get fit all the way around minus my putter. I did get fit for that.

@andrewjensengolf appreciate it. I have printouts from 20 years ago. Before the golf industry really knew the affects of spin, launch angle, and all the other good stuff. I have one of 40 balls with average clubhead speed of 105, ball speed 165, carry distance is 296 I think, and the spin is a ridiculous 3100. The rollout was 313 with a left and right deviation of 3 yards. It was on an About Golf Simulator. The information available has come a long way.

Do you think there is a minimum skill level to get fit? Is there a skill level where the stock shaft is good enough? Any insight on how to narrow down shafts before you start the fitting?

Probably is, yeah. A total novice can likely use anything… but once any type of “natural” motions, tendencies, patterns develop, it would be best to get clubs that work with them rather than making the motion work for the club

The advice is solid but my experience has been less than optimal. The last 2 drivers I purchased, one from a big box store w/ a fitting that included a custom upgrade shaft and the other from a niche high dollar custom fitter which also included a custom upgrade shaft. At the time both shops dialed in my numbers and had me super confident in my purchases. Taking them from the fitting centers, to the range, to the course neither club amounted into on-the-course improved performance. I'll own that my swing seems to change a bunch throughout a season but comparing them to a driver purchased a few years ago, "old trusty", neither performed as well in distance nor consistency. "Old Trusty" was a mockup of a buddies driver I played with and hit well in a couple competitive rounds. It had a non-up-charge upgrade shaft and I was able to order a look-a-like from the manufacture. I'm sad to say the shaft broke this past season leaving me to play a mini driver that didn't transition well. In 2024 I'll be dropping another grand $$$ searching for a new weapon to put in the bag but I'm left felling that my fittings numbers may not transition to course.

I use a UST Proforce shaft. You didn't like the stock shaft, and I get that. Would there be a player that would fit the stock shaft better? I guess what I'm asking is what player was the stock shaft aimed at? When I was being fitted for my Stealth, I couldn't hit any of the shafts the store had. I took the Proforce from my M5 and put that in the Stealth and started striping the ball. Lucky for me, the Stealth had a free upgrade to the UST.

Also I drive the ball ball 300 to 310 carry with a 10 to 12 yard dispersion

Good tip to consider getting a custom shaft instead of the stock shaft.

didn't know HZRDUS offered a "Silver"....this is not a critisism per se, but you really should tell us what the differences are in the shafts, specifically bend profiles....case in point I gamed the Ventus Red in my TSi3 driver for a long time and loved it, but my bad swings were losing it in transition because it was still a bit too stout, so when I saw the HZRDUS started offering their RDX Red (softer handle with the "black" tip), I gave it a go and I have been driving the ball further and straighter without the effort ever since.....and HZRDUS Red is pretty stock....just saying, cheers

Exactly, you’ve found the best shaft for your swing/game. Stock shafts are still quality shafts, just hard to have “one shaft to suit thousands”… and by no means is any of this a dig at HZRDUS (it just happens to be the stock offering in the Srixon)
As for the bend, differences, profiles, I’ll leave that to TXG as they can better articulate all that.
