Correction to the video: I misspoke saying this was Jim McEwan’s first foray into Black Art. It was his LAST before handing over the reigns to Adam Hannett. If you've tried the Black Art, what did you think of it? Let me know below!
In the current year of 2023, the prevailing rate on the secondary market stands at $575 USD. Additionally, I have reasonable confidence that Jim incorporated a marsala cask as a key component in crafting this.
Honestly, from how you describe this bottling (and considering how much I’ve loved the couple Bruichladdich bottlings I’ve tried so far) I agree that this sounds like it would be one of the few bottles that are worth that high of a price. I’m starting to realize I really appreciate when I consistently enjoy the range of a distillery’s products and not just a one-off bottling that receives hype. Also, your reviews are so pleasant to watch.
Thank you I appreciate it! Bruichladdich is one of my favorite distilleries although I do think the Octomore line is severely over priced. They are good whiskies and I think they’re delicious but $150 for a 5 yr old is a bad joke. I just can’t justify that price just because a whisky is the most heavily peated. But that’s sadly a sign of the times right now and the ridiculous craze around whiskies that are in any way limitef
I’d also add that only you can decide if a bottle is ‘worth it’. Everyone has a different budget. If you make 300k a year, $300 on a bottle is nothing. If you make 30k, that’s a significant investment. But what I will say is that this one holds up and beats many other ~$300 whiskies I’ve tried.
I bought the Black Art and my boyfriend think that it is the best whisky that he has ever had. Just loved it. Do you know of any others in this league or maybe even a bit better? Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks
Hi, I bought 4.1 in 2018 in Livigno. I was amazed by this whisky! It cost me 160EUR and I made a mistake I did not buy it again in 2019. (I go to Livigno every year or at least I did). So I bought the bottle again in 2020, for 230EUR. Now I am hesitating whether I open it or not. My first child was born a week ago so this might be the right moment.. but on the other hand, is it really that rare and interesting as a keeper for the future? I found a shop with affordable 7.1 so it might make up for it :-D
They Black Art series is relatively rare. Bruichladdich produces somewhere around 12,000 bottles for the whole world. I would say Anything under 20,000 is considered rare depending on levels of demand for that specific distillery. I think these will definitely be good bottles to keep into the future but personally I’d say open and celebrate now!
I bought 3 bottles of 4.1 in past month. These are last bottles in my country. I paid 836 usd for them so its like 278 usd each. And all stores said that i wouldnt get more anywhere in my country. These 3 bottles are last ones
I would suggest asking local liquor store owners. Often they have bottles stashed away / at other locations or can find them for you. But unfortunately since it is a few years old and produced in limited quantities it will be harder to find. Alternatively some online whisky sellers will get bottles periodically of discontinued / limited bottles even years later.
As Bruichladdich is unpeated as stated everywhere, does that also mean there are no notes of smoke / burn / ash / rubber anywhere to be seen? (not a smoky / peated whisky fan over here)
Correct. I’ve mentioned it in past Bruichladdich videos but it’s been awhile so I should’ve mentioned that here. They are one of the few non-peated Islay whiskies. However any bottle labeled Port Charlotte or octomore will be heavily peated. These are also made at the Bruichladdich distillery.
Excellent review as always. I'd love a bottle of Black Art but it's just so expensive. I kind of feel that any drink at that price is kind of immoral unless there's some interesting historical attachment. I'm sure the whisky is excellent but....well, just but. I can buy amazing sherry that is up to 100 years old and mind blowingly complex for half the price. I like the micro-brewery angle such as the Organic and Bere Barley.
I know what you mean. I typical don’t spend over $100 for a bottle unless it’s a special occasion. However, this one I found at $300 and I really do savor it on special occasions. Truly a spectacular whisky. with the tariffs in 2019 and supply constraints from Covid, everything has gone up in price a lot and it’s definitely helped me consume less. I’ll be reviewing the Islay barley as part of my slate of Bruichladdich reviews, and I’m excited to try it. I’ve heard good things!
I mean..... its worth every single penny. 23-29 year old scotch for under $600????? That's literally a steal.... its not even close to expensive for the product you're getting.
@@getmeoffthisplanet4357 I can't tell if you're being sarcastic. Do you really think a bottle 20 something year old whisky is worth $300-600? You can't be serious right?
@@welshtoro3256 You must be new to whiskey. LMAO. You gotta pay to play for high age statement scotches. Go find me a 20-30 year scotch for less than $300. You have absolutely zero idea what you're talking about my guy. Fact is, $300-600 is a steal for over 20 year old whiskey

@@getmeoffthisplanet4357 Glencadam 21 costs £99. I recently finished a bottle of Benrinnes 24 which cost me £105.
