Not only that, but the current strike in Hollywood has driven a lot of traditional editors in film/tv to pivot into the online space, at least temporarily.
Yeah I think this point is kinda why the freelancer buisness for video editing has pretty much imploded. With how many people with like 8 years experince are now just absorbing every possible paying video editing job on the freelance side of things. You got it I'll do it at 10x the cost but a tenth the time a true beginner would take.
Absolutely, this is a big reason I decided not to become a remote editor for a basic income. The job postings from companies, and from youtubers, did not match the cost of living -- and then suddenly I was clearly being outmatched by industry pros who needed the work too. I realized I have no choice but to focus on my videography business which lets me become competitive through a niche specialty.
It's a tough decision!! Both have pros and cons. I used to work in house and didn't like my boss so I switched. I talk about it more in this video: ruclips.net/video/HeE64Z3kZvo/видео.html

I would agree and its unfortunate, that video editing like a lot of what use to be casual to join careers are becoming rapid forced evolution from what use to be easy apply jobs. To rapidly people looking for more than what they can afford ask skills. Kinda like the tech repair and labor market is woefully underpaying those they employ. Instead of offering ways to get into the career its this constant cannibalization of the top 1% of talent. And assuming 14-15 dollars is gonna somehow be enticing to a video editing genius/1-3 plus years of video editing. Its sad that almost every job market is heading in the direction that software coding has gone. Instead of fostering new talent its like mass fondling of sorts the prized few. Instead of fostering a healthy population of the art of the career. If you asked me we are already at the point where most talents involving freelance work is well in the range of kinda just imploding. The supply of potential freelance talent in most subjects is beyond what the demand is for those talent areas. Its just a slow motion implosion imo.
One of my instructors told me "HR cares about your degree. The person who actually makes the hiring decision cares about your portfolio. "

PS: I'm not angry with ya Alex or Colleen, I just feel like video editing is kinda just picking up the bad habits of job hiring.
