Sade was born in Ibadan, Nigeria, and brought up partly in Essex, England, from the age of four. She studied at Saint Martin's School of Art in London and gained modest recognition as a fashion designer and part-time model, prior to joining the band Pride in the early 1980s. After gaining attention as a performer, she formed the band Sade, and secured a recording contract with Epic Records in 1983. A year later the band released the album Diamond Life, which became one of the best-selling albums of the era, and the best-selling debut by a British female vocalist.
OH! You must hear her live performance of "Is It A Crime?" She's wearing a white gown. It's most incredible! I just looked it was recorded and filmed in San Diego in 1993.
Sade is Above the Rest. I love the reference to her as Precious, she absolutely is. I've absolutely loved her since I was 15 years old back in the 80s. Nobody like her❤
Her band is INSANE! The KINGS of SUBTLETY! NO-one else can play one or tow notes and make them SO instrumental and NECESSARY! 💜💜💜💜🔥🔥🔥🔥 Stuart Matthewman [Sax, guitar; woodwinds, programming, arrangements] Paul S. Denman [Bass, etc.] & Andrew Hale [keyboards (etc.)] have made up the core band and have done work as a studio band for other artists, over the years, as well. They also featured as: Sweetwater (a name for them as a studio outfit, sans Ms. Adu; but later became a 'full band' -At least briefly), which released 2 albums of their own. The drummers seat is "a bit wonky" (i.m.o.): when the core members (including Sade herself) left the band: Pride, the drum seat was held by one: Paul Anthony Cooke ...but on the first 2 albums: Dave Early fills the drum position, mostly and Martin Ditcham (esp. on the albums), tends to be listed, purely, as a percussionist (until: Stronger Than Pride, anyway -I believe- 🤷♂️🤷♂️). Ditcham, i.m.h.o., was the most consistent drummer, over-the-years ...but by the first reunion [Lover's Rock (their weakest album of all -and, it's STILL great! 😛] ...he didn't tour with the band, any more. 🤷♂️🤷♂️ ...So: I don't know... 🤷♂️ [In the video, I'm pretty sure, it's Dave Early sitting in on the kit...] Sadé is magical. Majestic. Sinuous. Ethereal. Powerful. Comforting. Heartbreaking. -EVERYTHING! !!!!! If there, ever, WERE a "food of the Gods" (as ambrosia was termed by the Ancient Greeks): Miss Sadé Adu's voice would BE THAT THING! ABSOLUTELY!!!! 💯 She is indescribable and UNMATCHED. 💜💜💜💜💜💜🔥🤘🤘👊 -It's almost as if: it is impossible for these guys to do wrong. Ever. They are deliciously genius every time out & every moment! (and on-stage??? 😵😵🤦♂️...I mean... Come ON!!!!!!!!!!! 💥💥💥💥💥💥💥🤘🤘🔥⚡)!
You said it all! Sade on vinyl is a treat! I have her Diamond Life LP and the track “Your Love Is King” has so much percussion going on it’s dynamic. So good!
First! Love Sade, you can never go wrong with their music. Awesome band, timeless because their style is unique. Thank you Chod. It is always a pleasure watching your reactions.
Fell in love with her the first time I saw her when I was in junior high. I sooo wanted to be as elegant, smooth and beautiful as she was and still is. In highschool I went goth, but, she always stayed as one of my idols. She is just such a beautiful artist and person, always classy and her voice! La ! Perfection incarnate.
My jealousy only shows it’s ugly head when I experience someone who’s beautiful AND talented. That’s when I feel life isn’t fair for the rest of us. In the end I reign it in, but just barely. I LOVE Sade’s haunting voice.
Such a beautiful and haunting voice. Also check out Norah Jones; she's similar in style. Her breakout was "Don't Know Why." Loved your reaction, thanks!!
Her live stuff from 2011 is on a whole different level. Anything from that dvd. Your love is King, Paradise, Cherish the Day, Pearls, Jezebel, Is it a Crime, Soldier of Love, Skin, Morning Bird and more.....
I have been listening to Sade from the early 80's She is absolutely amazing along with her backup band and If I'm correct they have been with her from the start Check out all of Sade's live performances to get a real sense of the talent
Nice one W..was more into rock music when this initially came out but but it stood out for me at the time..Sade oozed class ..great production ..great to hear this one again :)
Chod, you have to watch Sade perform live. 👍🏽 This band has been together for decades. Personal fav, "Somebody Already Broke My Heart" but her vocals in "Is it a Crime," "Pearls" and "Jezebel" are insane LIVE!! Seen her twice would love to again. ❤👍🏽
Chod, I would heartily encourage you to watch her concert videos. I have Sade Live and Sade: Lovers Live, and they are just awesome showcases of talent and content like you just heard in this video.
Like the beat from Paul Simon's '50 Ways to Leave Your Lover,' or Phil Collin's 'In the Air Tonight,' from the first time I heard the beat for this, I was sold on the whole song. They're all fairly sparse, but so clever. In concert they always looked like they were having a lot of fun. They had his kick drum up quite a bit louder, and IMO it makes the whole beat even better with it being more prominent. Also, her bass player never gets enough credit.
It's not so much the "influence" in music's design, it depends on the decade, genre and what studio musicians and producers recorded said songs that gives it the "sounds" everyone can recognize from one artist to another.

I love Sade. She actually sings instead of practicing vocal scales during songs. Classy, gorgeous and groovy.

I second that!
Live Sade is in a class by herself.
@@grendelz Yes she is. The San Diego performance I suggested is outrageous. I really hope he takes a listen to it.
Ah, Sade. Her music always goes in the “love making music” category. Exquisite.
In a class all her own. Love EVERYTHING about Sade.
Sade is Above the Rest. I love the reference to her as Precious, she absolutely is. I've absolutely loved her since I was 15 years old back in the 80s. Nobody like her❤
I swear.. she puts on the absolutely BEST show.. It's amazing!
What's not to like about Sade, she's drop dead gorgeous and sings like an angel and has a completely grooving band.
ohhhhh yes, this song and Smooth Operator are amazing....
Oh my Chod, Sade is class and elegance. Her music always hits that sweet spot. Please more Sade.
One of a kind voice.
Her whole band is awesome, but her tunes are so routed around the bass, it makes us bass players smile!
Sade. That voice.
Her band is INSANE!
The KINGS of SUBTLETY!

Brilliant reaction bruh! Yes! A Sade concert.

Love her! One of my favourite female artists! Love the jazzy music!

Great dance squeeze
So smooth. Pure romance in that voice.
What a cool vibe and man she's beautiful
My favorite SADE song. Not only is Sade the truth. But the band SADE IS THE TRUTH AS WELL. ✌
Well put man. She is a Queen and we are her people.
Her voice is so smooth!

Love Sade! I love her laid back jazzy style. Can you do some George Benson? He has a similar vibe. “On Broadway”, “ Love Ballad”
Sade and Anita Baker, queens of the quiet storm.
I've seen her perform twice. Not only her voice pure elegance, but her band is
'Right Upstairs.
'.
Smoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooth! I love her, too. Elegant is the perfect word. Thanks for the reaction, Chod.
Such a smooth and wonderful voice. I always dug Sade!
Sade (Helen) is phenomenal 👍👍🙏🦋🐚
I don't have it on vinyl, but I have the cassette from 1985!
Sade and Anita Baker are the most elegant of elegant..

Pretty girl , but I love rock .
This is a perfect example of what's missing in much of today's music. ARRANGEMENT!
