    I speak Haitian Creole and it’s amazing how these two languages evolved separately but some of the contractions of French words and the changes in grammar are so similar or even exactly the same in some cases. Very cool!

    As for "Bate lakol" (Beat the glue)'s origins:
    It relates to the days when kids would hunt for birds. They would put glue onto tree branches and wait for the bird to come get stuck on it.
    So "bate lakol" means trying to get the "pretty bird"/ the pretty girl (or guy). That's why it means "trying to seduce".

    He's a big black: During the period of slavery a ''Grand Noir'' (Big black) was a slave who was in charge of a group of other slaves. He was loyal to his master and had a lot of advantages but at the same time legally still a slave. His status was different from that of a ''Commandeur'' (overseer) who was either a white man or a ''libre'' (a non white free man). Nowadays the expression ''Grand noir'' applies to somebody, irrespective of race or gender, who brags a lot.

    ''Mine'' meaning 'girl' comes from the expression 'dragueur de mines' which in French is a boat used for dredging mines (explosives). 'dragueur' in French in a false cognate of the same word in Creole but has something to do with girls. The word 'mine' in Mauritius comes from the chinese word 'mien' which actually means noodle. This explains that.

  • @Sitwayen
    @Sitwayen 7 лет назад +4

    Subscribed funny as hell, however as a kreol language instructor I got triggered when you said that "la" doesn't mean anything. "Latab" in kreol is just "table" and "latab-la" is "the table".. Latab is a noun different from tab in kreol tab meaning counting tables e.g: tab 2, tab 5 etc, and latab meaning table..

    • @itsSHIRAAZ
      @itsSHIRAAZ  7 лет назад

      ohhh!! Mais "pose li lor latab" ek "pose li lor latab-la"... doesn't these two mean the same thing?

    • @Sitwayen
      @Sitwayen 7 лет назад +5

      It kind of does, in this situation, however "la" here is used to state which table you are talking about, without "la" it could be any table. The additional "la" here feels like it indicates this table rather than the table. I could be wrong, more research need to be done on the grammar of Creole. This explanation is my personal opinion rather than what is officially written in the documents provided by Lakademi Kreol Morisien since the academy does not really compare languages.

    • @maquilleMOI
      @maquilleMOI 7 лет назад +1

      " table" is "latable" as noun and "la table" is "latable la" - article and noun together..... i think from what i understand. or even cette table la ....ca latable la.... trying to figure out the synthax

      +Damien LLC The concept was translating exactly as it would be in English; not what it means.

    Eta mon frere, cant you do one on what old school Mauritian parents say, thats far more entertaining plus the phrases are more direct, no offence but this is a bit drole. Good concept but too much talking is ruining the fun in the actual slang.
