I speak Haitian Creole and it’s amazing how these two languages evolved separately but some of the contractions of French words and the changes in grammar are so similar or even exactly the same in some cases. Very cool!
Same thing other there!!! I noticed i understood more haitian kreol ki la reunion kreol for instance! Guess africans from same country went in haiti and mauritius
As for "Bate lakol" (Beat the glue)'s origins:
It relates to the days when kids would hunt for birds. They would put glue onto tree branches and wait for the bird to come get stuck on it.
So "bate lakol" means trying to get the "pretty bird"/ the pretty girl (or guy). That's why it means "trying to seduce".
+Rushil N This is brilliant! Thank you for this.
You're welcome :) Great video.
reminds me of UK/London slang when we say "chirpsing" or chirpsing a bird (female)
No Bro bate lakol means to flirt with a girl
im mauritian
“Bat lakol” means more like wooing or enticing
I love how you portray Mauritian creol and I hope you will fight for it in the future; if needs be. I'm a Mauritian creol lover and I see this in you. Please don't let me down. Mauritius needs people like you.
God bless.
Why am I discovering this just now!! This is perfect man, good job. Dan zot latete zot bizin p dir mauriciens ban dimoune bizarre wa!!😂😂
And isn't 'ein/eyy' a bit like 'hey you'?

Li grandnoir doesnt rlly mean he's big black, it's mostly....selfish, kinda...
Quand t'es mauricien et que tu sais tout se que cela veut dire et qu'eux non, tu te sens ''NIAHAHAHHA''
hahhaa
He's a big black: During the period of slavery a ''Grand Noir'' (Big black) was a slave who was in charge of a group of other slaves. He was loyal to his master and had a lot of advantages but at the same time legally still a slave. His status was different from that of a ''Commandeur'' (overseer) who was either a white man or a ''libre'' (a non white free man). Nowadays the expression ''Grand noir'' applies to somebody, irrespective of race or gender, who brags a lot.
I seeee
Most of Indian origin people classify as Grandes Noir.
Awesome!! Maybe try those next video ; Manz r li , touni minuit , zak mire dans tente , al guet to minis , bat bis , foupamal, aret fane kk ,.. ill think about some more!!

There's been a lot of those types of literal translation jokes throughout the years, But this concept makes it look original. Good actor, good quality video. Music was a pain though. But hilarious all way through. Keep it up. Proud of you

Not bad mate. Keep it on. Please explain to the african girl about the grandnoir thing because she was kinda confused and a bit offended.
hahha I did and she understood.

REPLY
first time on ur channel and i enjoyed it, i want more funny videos like this one.
Will do!
As a mauritian creole is really funny
''Mine'' meaning 'girl' comes from the expression 'dragueur de mines' which in French is a boat used for dredging mines (explosives). 'dragueur' in French in a false cognate of the same word in Creole but has something to do with girls. The word 'mine' in Mauritius comes from the chinese word 'mien' which actually means noodle. This explains that.
ohhh
Enjoyed this so much haha
I should be revising ahhh
hahha go!!!
Kan to enne mauritienne et to pe gagne mari rier 🤣🤣🤣😂
If ever you're doing a part two, could you add 'get diri tir cari' in it?
anyways,great work xD
keep it up
What does that mean?
its_SHIRAAZ you aim for something but actually do something else instead
yep
Was really fun and cool watching this... (what you said on the "creol" stuff was really TRUE...that people here dont realise it themselves as being a creole!!!

That was so funny! Also THANKS for making me insecure about adding "la" to everything.
hhahha Hey! I just subscribed to your channel. I loved your videos! Keep it up. :)
Thanks, same to you!
Singaporeans too add "lah" at the end of their sentences but specially for emphasis and while using English/Singlish. Donc morisyen enkor bon la.
+Anjali Rampersad ahaha I see
+Neeraj Gooriah 😂🙏🏼
Soo good!! Loved their reactions🤣 just discovering your channel! Thumbs up 👍👍
J'ai toujours entendu dire "scratch and smell" et pas "scratch and sniff" xD

hhahha they are incredible!
How long did you lived in mauritius ? Btw great video
All my life! lol I'm in new york for my studies.
No offense.. But don't speak about the supposed relationships between races in Mauritius without specifying that it's your opinion. Don't propagate a biased representation of our country mate. It's fine if that's what you think, but make sure your viewers are aware of that.
True. But don't you think they are somewhat accurate?
Not particularly, but each to their own.
Amen sis
I can speak standard French mais je ne sais pas le Créole Mauricien.
Cozee
Nice one Shiraaz! ☺
Thank you thank you :)
this video is hilarious!!
new subscriber!
hahah thank you!!!
nice. was expecting a go goats etc.
la, sa are known to be restricted codes in language. or encoded language which doesn't help much in the oral development in early childhood
hahha I see
Coze top net ☺️👍
Good explanations Shiraz. Are you a member of kreyolofoni.org ?
*Shiraaz. What is it?
At least you had the decency of not showing them curse word, which me and many of my mates used to do in uk .
Keep going man, so funny our language, that we don't reliaze that when we talk...
hahha true!
Subscribed funny as hell, however as a kreol language instructor I got triggered when you said that "la" doesn't mean anything. "Latab" in kreol is just "table" and "latab-la" is "the table".. Latab is a noun different from tab in kreol tab meaning counting tables e.g: tab 2, tab 5 etc, and latab meaning table..
ohhh!! Mais "pose li lor latab" ek "pose li lor latab-la"... doesn't these two mean the same thing?
It kind of does, in this situation, however "la" here is used to state which table you are talking about, without "la" it could be any table. The additional "la" here feels like it indicates this table rather than the table. I could be wrong, more research need to be done on the grammar of Creole. This explanation is my personal opinion rather than what is officially written in the documents provided by Lakademi Kreol Morisien since the academy does not really compare languages.
" table" is "latable" as noun and "la table" is "latable la" - article and noun together..... i think from what i understand. or even cette table la ....ca latable la.... trying to figure out the synthax
will go right to your next video. keep it up ,to banne mine so hot
Hahahaha nice one. Keep it up
Bien riyer :D

Mezanmi bonjou e bonswa, mwen kontan de Lang sa-haitian kreyòl
Apart from those videos, can you please share your experiences about you being gay and Mauritian living abroad?
I wouldn't be able to tell you about my experiences being gay because I am not gay but as a Mauritian studying abroad, I must say that it has been very culturally enriching. It made me grow closer to being Mauritian.

Always thought that 'mine' was like 'La mine d'une personne' 0-0 as in 'bonne mine'
I suppose the context is different here.
Mine (in english)~my girl#hotperson
Mine (in creole)
Us mauritians are genious 😂😂😂
I dont know if you understand what i meant but yeah....
P.s i realised that in english class😂
I didn't quite get it :P
Entertaining video! Your literal translation for "pas prend nissa" is not entirely accurate, though; "don't take pleasure" would have been more accurate.
I suppose you're right :)
Beat the glue means bat lacol means purchuading someone

Eta mon frere, cant you do one on what old school Mauritian parents say, thats far more entertaining plus the phrases are more direct, no offence but this is a bit drole. Good concept but too much talking is ruining the fun in the actual slang.
I'll try! :)
