So here's my personal input on my keyboard journey. I have the Defy and not the Raise fyi.
I currently work as a translator, so typing is a BIG part of my daily life. I type my translations, send a lot of messages back and forth with colleagues online, and am chronically online in my free time. I started having discomfort in my wrists around 2020-21 when i started my job when i was typing on a qwerty laptop keyboard. So i started looking into how to make my wrists feel better and prevent future pain & injuries.
My first move was to adopt a new keyboard layout. I looked into dvorak and colemak, and decided to go with a colemak variation so that it's not too different from qwerty and so that i can keep using keyboard shortcuts with my left hand. (ctrl c/v, ctrl w, ctrl shirt t, etc. Dvorak has a lot of these keys on the right side, but i like to keep my right hand on the mouse and left on keyboard at all times.)
So i spent a month learning to touch-type the new colemak variation layout while still practicing qwerty for when i have no choice but to use it. While the new layout made it more comfortable to type, the comfort was mainly only for my fingers. The fingers would move less around due to optimized key placement, but my wrists, elbows & shoulders still weren't comfortable.
Then, i started looking into split keyboards. That's when i first learned about columnar keyboards as well. At this point, i had the idea of buying a split, columnar/ortholinear keyboard to use my custom colemak layout on, and use my ordinary staggered laptop keyboard as qwerty. My research didn't end satisfyingly. The only keyboards that caught my interest were the moonlander or ergodox, both of which i didn't like the design, the tenting integration, the lack of wrist-rests/palm pads, etc. Then, by a stroke of luck, on a random Reddit page about comparing these two keyboards, i saw one commenter say "instead of those 2, just wait for the Dygma Defy to release." That's when i looked it up, and it was love at first sight. Great tenting integration with lots of angles, columnar, split, rgb backlight & underglow, and SO MANY THUMB KEYS!!! Immediately preordered one.
After receiving it, it took me about 2-3 weeks to type at a fairly fast pace (50-70 wpm) using colemak. And i'm loving it every single minute. I show and brag about the keyboard to all my friends irl and online, sending images, trying to convince my family & friends to get one as well (to no avail so far, but my mom is interested in the Raise 2 since it's less different from the ordinary keyboard.)
The Defy is a dream come true. No more wrist pains unless i type for a veeery long time, shoulders open, i sit up straighter, everything. It's a joy to type on.
The thing that was probably the hardest to get used to was probably the thumb keys. I put backspace, shift, enter, ctrl, alt, win, and a bunch of stuff on the thumb cluster, and having to unlearn touchtyping those keys took a bit. But now it's like it's always been this way.
One thing people always ask me is if i type faster with this keyboard now. And honestly, i'd say no. I don't type faster. I don't type slower either. I type at about the same speed as when i'd type with qwerty on a staggered laptop keyboard in the past. However, i have MUCH better comfort while typing, which leads to better sustained typing speeds. For example, i could type at 85wpm for 2-3 minutes on an ordinary laptop keyboard, but then my wrists would already start being uncomfortable and my fingers needing rest. But now, i can type for longer than that and still feel good to go. So better sustained performance due to having less comfort issues.
Currently i type at a comfortable 75-85wpm when i'm taking it easy, but if i were to turn on my mental boosters, i can go 90-100wpm.

Holy crap, this is so similar to my situation that it's uncanny. I'm also a translator that was experiencing wrist pain and ended up buying a Dygma Defy and learning Colemak DH. I'm so happy to hear there's others out there like me, the Defy is indeed a dream come true 😁

they are just missing angled thumbclusters. like on a dactyl manuform or the moonlander. I hate pressing buttons with the side of my thumbs. for sure the prettiest ergo boards though.

The keycaps of the thumb cluster are convex to help with that. But if you want really curvy thumb clusters, check the Dygma Defy 😃

Obviously not end-game because it's staggered... either people will get this thinking 'at least it will feel more familiar' and then have to upgrade to an ortholinear later because they know that it's just better, or they'll get it not knowing how stupid a staggered layout is and then have to sell it on to the next sucker once they realise they've made a huge mistake. I love my Defy, but they got the names wrong because it's this keyboard that defies all reason.

I feel like ortholinear isnt as "end game" as everyone makes it seem. I own a moondlaner and after typing on it daily for a year, I still struggle with it. I touch type but my hands are so used to staggered that I still mistype more on the moondlaner than I would on a staggered keyboard. That's why I'm excited for the Raise2. For me the Raise2 is an "End Game" keyboard. IMO, At the end of the day, it's just a tool. Use whatever works best for you and your use case.

We believe end-game is subjective. Columnar certainly has some benefits, that's why we made the Dygma Defy, but many people find a staggered split keyboard the perfect fit for them.
