      Started my monthly donation today, Vanessa. Thank you!
      If you are willing to share this kind of info, the cost of a groom, specified in either Canadian or US dollars, would help me in determining the “right size” monthly donation. I am allergic to dogs, my husband is allergic to cats, and we have no friends who have a monthly grooming bill, so I’m needing your guidance. Thanks, again!

    Thank you for not bashing or encouraging bashing of the owner. People's circumstances change - someone who is a fit, capable pet owner today may not be in a year or so. Life changes. While we all would have liked to see Marley's coat taken care of sooner, it's clear they've put work into this boy throughout his life. Thank you for being part of your community and helping those who, for whatever reason, aren't able to physically help their pets.

      @moonhaus.rachaelHOW is your comparison even relevant??

    • @Randi-Pandi
      @Randi-Pandi 27 days ago

      @moonhaus.rachael ...um, yes? If a kid shows up to a hair salon, and their hair is a matted mess, due to a lack of brush, and just being thrown into a ponytail for the last year, I think everyone is just glad it's--finally--getting taken care of. It could be the parent was not brushing as thoroughly as they should have, because maybe the child has a really sensitive scalp and any knot-pulling is painful, maybe a parent was misinformed on how to care for their child's hair type, or maybe the kid was just away at summer camp, and couldn't be bothered to pick up a brush, because they're 12, and heck those at-home-grown-up rules.
      It's not always nefarious...often times things like this happen due to snowball effect of sorts, when the good turns bad, and the bad gets worse, an at-home solution fails miserably, then the worse gets worse-er, and suddenly having to figure out how to fix it is a massive undertaking.
      So yes--major props to the people who can push past their own possible feelings of shame or embarrassment, and taking the steps to get their pet (or kid) the care they need.

      I imagine it’s bc a lot of pet owners see their pets as similar to having kids- that is, vulnerable creatures under their care. It’s out of empathy towards the pet, though here it’s at the expense of the owner, and I don’t think that shaming people is the best way to get them to change. Especially if the current circumstances are difficult to change immediately, such as physical or mental illness

    So, let me make an obvious comment. 😊
    I was disappointed to hear this isn't available in the US yet because I really want to help.
    I mentioned it to my daughter and she suggested I "pay it forward".
    I contacted the groomer who works through the local veterinarian in our small town. I donated directly to her for whoever needs it.
    She loves the idea so much she started a fund for other locals to donate to! 😁
    Maybe your local veterinarian can help you, wherever you are! 🤞

    I once took my long haired cat to a new groomer. She had some matting in her haunches. I usually groomed her myself, and she had been to a couple different groomers before. Everyone including me had an awful time grooming her, but she never had an issue with me afterward. The new groomer told me how wonderful she was for grooming. I was shocked. Right after we got home she promptly bit me. lol. You just never know. Never blame your groomer unless you have irrefutable evidence of wrong doing!

    So nice that you really wanted to do pup’s nails because you realize vet prices are insane! I was unemployed last year but my cat needed a groom I could barely afford. Groomer refused to clip nails because one claw was about to (but didn’t yet) grow into paw pad. Vet quoted crazy money and unnecessary procedure to the tune of $400! I was able to safely trim the nails on that paw at home with no problem. I’ve found a new more reasonable vet, a better groomer and great job since!

    My Rottweiler got a huge hematoma on his ear. I took him to the vet, he said nothing to be done and that his ear would probably droop. I put him in a happy hoodie kind of setup with his ear pinned back along his head and neck, that it could get maximum blood flow. After a few days the hematoma reduced and his ear healed perfectly. No droop. Just sharing my experience, you do you. 💕🌞🌵😷

      unfortunately, we both know that the owner's situation is the harder part to achieve here... the dog is clearly emotionally neglected as well... and it looks pretty unrealistic to rely on such charity to keep a dog groomed which, in reality, the owner cant afford to keep bec breeds like cocker spaniel and poodle are higher maintenance with their fur.

    A coworker of mine had a red English cocker spaniel she was keeping in a crate due to food aggression. I took her, poor little girl was matted so bad her ears were stuck to the side of her head and she couldn't even turn her head, she had to be shaved completely to get rid of all the mats.
    She was so happy after her groom, she never showed any food aggression and was a wonderful family pet for ten years after. I still miss my little Penny.

    ‘Play with your dog’s feet’ The best advice I got from a vet when I was a first time dog owner and brought my new puppy in for vaccinations is when the puppy/dog is cuddling with you and they are so relaxed they are half asleep. gently play with their feet, separate their toes, touch in between the pads,gently massage the toe beans - they will probably pull their paw away, retrieve it and persist until they relax, do with all 4 paws. This dog improved over the length of a groom with someone he didn’t know - imagine how much better he could get with having his feet and legs touched in a familiar environment with someone he already knows? I might also suggest to the owner to pickup a set of dog clippers and use a #13 blade and clip the dog like once a week - because he was clipped either a #10 today, the few times the owner will be doing this and not actually clipping any fur but it gives both the owner and the dog a chance to’ practice’. It might be a month or two before any fur is actually trimmed but by then both dog and owner will be pretty relaxed with how to hold and being held. And if the dog’s fur is kept short, no matting and the haircut is much faster.

My husband owns a woodworking business so sounds meant nothing to them, but We couldn't touch her front feet she'd sit there for him but not me. We bought a professional ANDIS clipper after paying the groomer twice$$ it pay for itself in 2 cuts 17 years later it's still going strong knock on wood with 2 SHZ JUST BOUGHT A BLADE IT'S CRAP MY OLD DULE ONE WORKS BETTER. BUT THE GROOMER AT THE PET STORE WAS AMAZED IT LASTED THAT LONG ,WE TOOK GOOD CARE OF THE BLADE BY OILING IT

      If "whatever is going on at home" causes such severe neglect of one's dog then his owner should surrender him to a rescue group as he deserves better- Much better. His personality indicates that the neglect extends way beyond his lack of coat care.

    • @mgailp
      @mgailp Month ago +12

      @treasuretrovel3816 How much of that reaction is what has happened to him and how much is personality. He reminds me of my aunt's little dog: Sweetie was afraid of everyone, despite never being mistreated or neglected by any humans. (Previous owner and bitch's owner known to us.) Sweetie was the runt of a large litter and WAS neglected by her bitch. She would only allow 5 people to even touch her and could not be professionally groomed. Fortunately Sweetie had a coat that I could easily manage with scissor cutting it (as she was also terrified of the clipper used on the previous dog).

      @treasuretrovel3816 It seems like a lot of assumptions are being made in that statement. While I am upset at how matted and nervous this dog was, you don't know and can't assume the owner's situation. The owner recognized they needed help with grooming him and sought out a professional. That is a huge step! Please be kind to this owner. Unless they are purposefully abusing and neglecting this dog, there's no reason to jump to such conclusions.

      @TS-xn1mc don't say this. you have no idea what is going on at home. example: I have had 5 operations in one year, two of them emergency, live alone, have a legal case regarding my home, was not able to bend over for most of last year (try to keep house when you can't bend below the waist), and my list goes on. by the way, my neighbors and I just found a lost doberman yesterday evening roaming our street who was very frightened but super friendly to all of us. I've never seen a sweeter dog. We are trying to get him unlost right now and avoid taking him to a shelter. maybe he was dumped because his owners couldn't feed him. if we had decent support services for humans, many of these situations would never happen. Vanessa herself reminds us not to judge all the time.

    For the ear hematomas as a boxer breeder - if we had uncropped pups - we would tape the ears down - with the tape criss crossing under their chin like a bonnet strap. (To prevent flying nuns or turned ears) This prevents the ear from being abused with shaking and allows it to heal. A bleeding ear is actually better than a not bleeding ear. As when it doesn’t bleed - it instead swells; balloons; and separates the two sides of the leather. And when it dries creates cauliflower ears.
    The taping is non invasive; and can be flipped up on top of the head to allow an airing period each day - while supervised.

It took several years before I was able to even touch her paws without her turning and snapping or lightly biting my hand. That almost never happens now but if she’s acting sensitive I put a cone on her that’s too long for her to reach my hand. So far that has worked, no broken skin ever.
