- Mercedes Unimog 406 Diesel from Deutschland has a mechanical winch and also a front PTO. If features Sheer Traction, Impressive Ground Clearance These ex bundeswehr U406 Unimogs are also populair in the camping scene. This Unimog has a mechanical winch and also a front PTO. Unimog is a range of multi-purpose auto four wheel drive medium trucks produced by Mercedes-Benz, a division of Daimler AG.. Some say that is also has inspired the Mercedes G Class. #unimog #406 #unimog406 #unimog Sloterdijk
The name Unimog is pronounced [ˈuːnɪmɔk] in German and is an acronym for the German "UNIversal-MOtor-Gerät", Gerät being the German word for machine or device. Daimler Benz took over manufacture of the Unimog in 1951 and they are currently built in the Mercedes truck plant in Wörth am Rhein in Germany.Unimogs have very high ground clearance made possible by portal gears that allow the axles and transmission to be higher than the tires' centers. Unimogs also feature a flexible frame that allows the tires a wide range of vertical movement to allow the truck to comfortably drive over extremely uneven terrain, even boulders of one metre in height. They are equipped with high visibility driving cabs to enable the operator to see the terrain and more easily manipulate mounted tools. The newest Unimog models can be changed from left-hand drive to right-hand drive in the field to permit operators to work on the more convenient side of the truck. The ability to operate on highways enables the Unimog to be returned to a home garage or yard to thwart vandalism. The 406/416 middle series were produced beginning in 1963. They were equipped with a four cylinder diesel (OM312) producing 65 hp (48 kW). The 406 and 416 are similar, The 416 having a longer 2,900 mm (110 in) wheelbase compared to 2,380 mm (94 in) for the 406. Later models were equipped with the direct injection OM352 diesel engines starting with 80 hp (60 kW) and going up to 110 hp (82 kW).
Between the original Unimog and the middle series, Daimler-Benz developed a light series 421/403. This was later supplemented by the 413 line. They differ by the wheelbase and the engine power. The 421 has a 2,380 mm (94 in) wheelbase and the 403 has a 2,250 mm (89 in) wheelbase. The new engines come from the passenger car line (421/U of 40 hp (30 kW) with 2.2-litre capacity), and from the Benz truck line (403/U of 54 hp (40 kW) with 4.8-litre capacity).
The OM352 can easily be tuned to 125hp using Mercedes approved specifications in both the 406 and 416. The OM352 can also be custom tuned up to 150hp. It is also possible to turbo charge the OM352. However, unlike the 435, a turbo is not a direct swap and involves modification to the cab. The turbo is a very tight fit and intrudes into the cab. As a result this is not a straightforward or practical modification but with some ingenuity it is certainly possible.
Special Drive Train configurations:
There are no overdrives or gear-splitters available for the 406 and 416. However, for those who want to increase the top speed, there are two options; "fast axles" and/or larger tires. "Fast axles” involve installing lower ratio ring and pinion gears. This will provide approx 20% increase in top speed. “Fast axles” are not recommended for the 406. The short wheelbase, combined with the large tires and high center of gravity, make the handling on a 406 unpredictable and potentially unstable at higher speeds, especially if there is poor traction.
As with other Unimogs, increasing the tire size gives a higher top speed, better cruising rpm and more ground clearance. 14.50x20 tires fit with little or no modifications.
PTO units include:
540-rpm front PTO
High-speed variable rpm front PTO
540 front rear PTO
540 front rear PTO double clutch driven
540/1000 RPM shiftable PTO double clutch driven
Underdrive Gearboxes:
The 406/416 were available with the “cascade gearbox” which essentially adds three additional ratios ranges giving the vehicle High, Intermediate, Low and Super Low. Just like Hi/Low on normal 4x4s, all gears on the gearbox are available in each range giving a total of 24 gears on the six speed. The ratios are a follows:
High 1:1
Intermediate 1.27:1
Low 4.67:1
Super Low 42.9:1
Comfort:
Unimog 406/416 cabs tend to be pretty loud seeing as the occupants are virtually sitting next the big 5.6 liter diesel engine. However, Mercedes did little to sound proof the cab so there is room for lots of improvement. Insulation, sound deadening mats and carpeting can bring the noise levels down quite a bit and add to overall comfort. Of course the 406/416 will never be a quiet vehicle by modern standards no matter how much soundproofing is used but it can be certainly made tolerable. mercedes g class

The owner of the Landry was never seen again, due to embarrassment 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I have a Unimog 406. The only problem with it is the low top speed (around 75 Kmh). I was wondering if you can share your view regarding the possible options to increase the top speed (wheel size is already the largest that can fit and I am not willing to changing the engine). I was considering the use of a turbo and faster axels. Many thanks in advance.
Unimog U406 U416 and the truck more beautiful than this world, I've worked to bring materials and equipment, power lines and I rode with 2 tons over everywhere I went, knowing guide. by CJ
Thanks for your comment! I agree, Unimog is one of the most impressive vehicles ever made!!!
1/18 scale Unimog 406/403 ready to run RC model , very nice body and 4wd system, it is good for play both indoor and garden or display at home or at office. (8) FMS 1/18守望者(Unimog)官方影片 - RUclips
Sounds like the cooling fan hitting the fan shroud...may be a loose motor mount allowing the fan to touch something as the suspension flexes.
Ex cooling fan sales engineer here. That sound would last approximately 10 to 15 seconds, then the fan would be gone. It's some other metal-hitting-metal-under-stress-sound. Could be critical, could also just be the exhaust
That noise would drive me mad!!!! is it the exhaust pipe clattering against the back of the cab?? it seems awful close
It's some metal to metal resonating in the three way tilting/dumping cargo deck. The video was shot from outside. Inside the cab the engine is making too much noise to hear it, hahaha. Take care. Bye
Great vehicle. I just don't understand the difficulty the driver was facing.
What is that weird sound it keeps making? Sounds like power steering
Hi
thanks for the video but what is the best between 406 and 421 ?
jazairi jaz An 421 has a smaller engine : a inline 4 against the u406 and 416 the 6 inline OM 352
Dude, please air down your tires for more grip. if 32 psi drop it to 15 psi
Do you have any idea how long that would take for 12.5R20 tires?
@@AdamantineAxe Less than 5 minutes, been there done that.
The problem is you can't drive . I can make that mogg dance over the toughest terrain in the world.
Thank you for your kind contribution. God bless you.
david cannon And nevertheless you stayed so modest and humble. Respect!!
