So, been preparing for some exams for the past 2 weeks. And as I am about to get into my exams, I get news that my dearly beloved grandmother whom I loved and cherished so much has passed on. I am shuttered, I have great memories of her and can't concentrate. Sad part is I can't attend her burial because of exams. I came here, and solace is what I got. "Iye anopa mweya yedu rupenyu, asingatenderi kuti tsoka dzedu dzitedzemuke'.
Tauya nezvipo zvomupiro - Dr Fr E. Ribeiro I am no music geek, I don't even know how to read musical notations and interpret time signatures. However as a Catholic and literature enthusiast, I have it inside my soul to realise when something beyond the ordinary is at play. This morning I was listening to Catholic Joyful Melodies' rendition of Tauya nezvipo zvomupiro (a rendition which I have no doubt has Fr Ribeiro's blessing and highest approval, which is a really big thing knowing the perfectionist he was). I found myself with tears welling up in my eyes as I listened to this beautiful composition. Traditionally an Offertory Hymn, Tauya Nezvipo Zvomupiro, is sung during the procession of the gifts during mass. But you just have to trust Fr Ribeiro to transcend conventions and rudimentaries of music. I found myself elevated in different plane of thought and spiritual dialogue. The lyrics are pretty standard, there must be at least 3 or 4 other versions of the same song with the exact same words and arrangement. So how did I find myself not fighting the tears welling up in my eyes as I listened to this? It's the realisation of what homage to the Lord actually means (kupfugamira Mambo). This song is no ordinary Offertory Hymn that you will forget once you get the final blessing. It has a special celestial feel that will find you carrying it beyond the doors of the church. It is a song that transcends a perfect liturgical fit...it's a composition that speaks to a higher yearning of our souls...a composition that becomes a vehicle in a higher spiritual dialogue between the Creator and his creations. Far from the mental picture of the Magi bringing gifts to Baby Jesus, or a Paramount Chief demanding tribute from his subjects, I've come to understand the homage evoked in this song as a kind of surrender to God. We find ourselves at the altar of the mass once a week, but day after day we are before his throne begging or glorifying this Divine Master. Sometimes we don't even have the fruits of our human labour and workings to present before the Lord as gifts. Instead we have nothing but our brokenness, our shame, our sinfulness, our lack, our desires, our needs, our fears and insecurities, our rags of light, our burdens, our joys, our sorrows, our grief, our hopes, our dreams, our wishes, our aspirations. Now that surrendering to this absolute higher power that God is, that acknowledgement in our different states of need and suffering, that only God and God alone is in charge and in control of our lives. Just letting go of our obsession to control and direct the way of our life and letting God take control, that right there, is the homage that I find this song inviting me too. In our brokenness and inadequacy this song elevates my human mind and intellect into this higher plane of dialogue with a Omnipresent and Omnipotent God. And I don't think that is an accident, Fr Ribeiro apart from his spiritual work as a priest knew better to use sacred music to evoke emotions and draw the flock to its Shepherd. And so this song becomes a fitting accompanying hymn for all kinds of situations of our life. Be it processing grief and pain of loss or celebrating a victory. That for me is the genius of Fr Ribeiro to draw the human mind into this higher plane of spiritual dialogue with the Creator. What better way to use one's acumen than to live by the vows he made to tend to the Lord's flock till his last breathe. And having been privileged to share a part of my life personally with the man who was larger than life but very much ingrained in his calling and craft to his very last breathe. He lived of service and giving, a subject that would honestly require a tonne of documentaries and biographies to do him justice. The gift of this song will be a ship to help many souls navigate the turbulent unpredictable waters of this earthly life. May God rest his soul and grant that as he sang and taught the Lord's flock to sing to him, he too may now sing with the Angels.🙏🏽 Benedict Kunaka 19 June 2021
