Love the way this dude almost massages the info out of these engine builders and more often than not the interviewer sounds like he knows more than the engine builder bout his own engine. Obviously not but another great interview😎
Thanks to HPA for another great tech chat! Not many would have known about the big dramas leading up to #WTAC2018 without this. Doing new things on is not always rainbows and sunshine. But knowing your work, and making the best of the situation at hand, can sometimes allow you to take home the win!
Thanks for giving us some of your precious time! Always learn something new from you and we're excited to see what you've been up to next time we have a chance to catch up =)
@@hpa101 The interviewer sounds like he genuinely is an engine tech head. Not a lot of interviewers/channels, if any, actually delve in to coolant pressures, causes for liners to slip, engine dimensions and expansion, etc. Probably the first interview in a long time that actually made me want to listen carefully.
@@ThunderAppeal appreciate the high praise! While they make for good titles, we do enjoy going a little deeper than just power figures and bore sizes with knowledgeable people like Oskar here. Glad you do too - Taz.
Every interview I've seen Andre do is done with intelligent curiosity and respect to the interviewee. As a tech interviewer he is without peers. I always walk away from watching HPA posts having learnt a lot about the topic they've covered, and realising I knew far less than I thought I did at the beginning, and especially so when he has the likes of Oskar Elmgren under the spotlight. As always, thanks HPA and keep doing what you're doing. P.S. That block is as much a piece of art as it is an engineering feat.
Oskar seems like a really awesome dude. I love the interviews you've done with him! I also appreciate how much knowledge is condensed into these interviews. Excellent questions being asked with really clear answers.
Such a cool channel touching on the technical aspects of high performance engine design and operation. It’s great to hear a Kiwi accent for a change as well. Keep ‘em coming!
You really caught him off guard. Try a pre interview, interview. You have an awesome attitude. BUT if you intterview me, I would be intimidated by your go for it attitude combined with your wisdom, through experience! Keep at it. Thank you for your time and sharing your experience and knowledge.
Cheers mate! We do have a chat before we flick the camera on but an interview is never going to be as smooth as a prepared script that someone has looked over multiple times before putting it on camera. Even then, we have plenty of outtake reels of Andre and the team here from course material filming, which sometimes is a word for word script 😅 Oskar knows what he is talking about and is a very good communicator especially if you consider English is not his first language I reckon though. He also was a great podcast guest: ruclips.net/video/nRbDhl--4DI/видео.html www.hpatuned-in.com Cheers for the support too! Andre hopes to keep doing content like this for many years to come and no doubt we'll chat to Oskar a few more times too if we're lucky 😎 - Taz.
A billet block is my dream but they don't make blocks like this for my platform so what can you do ? Work your ass off to afford a 5 axis cnc mill and then maybe orders will come in once you're the first one with this block offered in Billet
If im hearing correctly, the head was intended for a "flat gasket" but a gasket with cylinder "rings" was installed. The gasket compressed until the embeded rings contacted the tops of the cylinder sleeves, at which point the act of tourquing the headgasket forced the sleeves to drop?. ... Great vid as usual gents! (saving for your whoooooole package as we speak. 😍 #alloftheeducation )
So the cylinder liners were machined to sit higher than the engine block on purpose, but because the mls gasket had grooves around it that caused the liners to sit? And the solution was to machine the engine block including the liners flat or I got something wrong? Thanks! As usual amazing content!!
Brilliant interview as always but how can Elmer racing justify €120,000 for this engine, I'm currently building a 4L barra motor that cost me £400 including shipping from Australia I've spent £1200 on pistons, conrods and gaskets another £2200 efr-9180 borg warner turbo and I should hit 1500bhp.
@@Drake5153 lots of fuels are compatible with nikasil coating(gas, leaded gas,c16,ethanol,methanol), just sulfur levels have to be low (it was problem for low-end gas (end bmw M52) in NA at the time
This is probably in reference to the nature of Ethanol and the additional quantity required - In many cases it can leach down into your cylinder walls and if its bad enough, dry them out causing friction, heat and glazed bores. If you don't have oil squirters your more likely to encounter these problems regardless of the coating.
The head gasket was out of spec, as in not listed as suitable, and not supplied ;) What a great result from a tough start though eh! The team did really well to pull it all together - Taz.
High Performance Academy the wrong gasket was used that cause the sleeves to drop which caused a leak. Why did replacing the gasket with the same spec solve the issue? Or rather why did the first gasket fail if the second one didn’t? Is it because the first gasket was over compressed?
Why did you not do the interview while looking at the actual part in question the ENGINE not to be rude but from an engineering standpoint would rather look at the engine than your faces.
There is only so much footage you can get and use of a bare engine block :) We are also nearly always under a pretty heavy time crunch. However I do appreciate the feedback, fire me through a link of another channel that is doing it well. We will take a look. - Ben

Correct! My guess is the head has a groove machined to accept that step of the sleeve

Please go to Oskar shop give him a few beers and do a long format engine build/design debrief.
Gun drilled rods is my favorite type of piston oiling i wonder why it was ruled out or not considered ..
More info is always good
