I had my multi-engine rating when I had like 80-90 hours total. Well, it went fine and passed on the first try, but I immediately felt like this is waaaay above my experience and I should not go alone in a twin engine. So yes, I passed, but it felt like I failed. I think your experience was way better. You understood immediately how hard is to fly a twin engine, although you have a lot more hours, and passing on the second check-ride I think you felt more confident than I felt back then. So good job of the first examiner! :)

@Jimmys World I see Trumpsters are coming to your rescue...rescue from what...
      1. Failure to put the gear down on a certification flight
      2. Failure to tie down properly for ground twin engine test
      3. Child on board sputtering engine test flight
1 & 2 are just pure stupidity #3 is Endangering the welfare of a child (MeGA STUPIDITY)
All of which prove my point "Your mentality is lethal !!" #1 was base on this video alone...then add the other 2 videos!
You are a Wile E Coyote Bomb waiting to go off !!
I have watched all of your videos very carefully...remember one strike wipes out all your "At-A-Boys" which you had a bunch!
Nobody remembers "At-A-Boys" after a fatal crash...they just add up the stupidity!
If someone were to send all 3 videos off to the FAA & FL. Child Protective Services what do you think they should do.
"Nothing" would not be the Keyword !!
You spin all three into a big joke...
I doubt the Authorities Having Jurisdiction AHJ will think it's funny!
I've seen your piloting mentality many times in the past...I have out lived them all...ain't that funny!
One day a Gentleman handed me my Flying Certification, I grabbed it, but he didn’t release it from his hand, he made me look him in the eyes and he said...
“I don’t care what you do with an airplane, but YOU will do it Safely”.
I ask YOU...of the three above, which ones fit that mandate of “Safely” and why not ??
Realize someone might watch your videos and conclude they need to report to the AHJ’s...
      Your choice is simple...
Do nothing here and someone may decide to report to all AHJ’s
      or
Convince everyone of what you learned from 1-3 and there is no need to report to AHJ’s
Let’s just say the jury is out until we see your Homework Assignment!
      OK Brandon...
      Yea I got it!
The life saving question is do you!

My dad is a retired private aviator,I remember flying in aircraft he always hit the brakes before the gear is all the way up....he was taught not to put the gear away while the wheels are spinning, just wandering if they still advise this....also would only allow plastic ball point pens or pencils in the plane...a metal pen can get into places you don't want it to get into.

My very first time in the right seat of a Piper Chieftain, I forgot to lower the gear until short final. Ironically, I had frequently expressed doubt how a pilot could land gear up. Now I know. Fortunately, that flight ended well and I learned a lesson that day. A twin is a handful even when things are going well.
Doing any training like this on a daily basis is the way to go. Much better than once a week. You don’t forget things between lessons.

Jimmy I forgot to add that I blew my first multi check in a 160 Apache. On a single engine approach the examiner told me to go around from an altitude of about 50 ft. Instead of saying no and land, I started a very flat slow single engine climb and then at about 400 ft made a shallow turn left into rising terrain. That sealed my pink slip. Should have landed as PIC. With many years since instructing in twins the lessons learned from a failure remain the strongest.😉

Congrats on joining the ranks of AMEL rated pilots! On my multi checkride many years ago the FAA had gone hog wild on following checklists exactly as written. The checklist for the plane I was flying required lowering the landing gear no sooner than on final approach during single engine operation, although it was quite capable of safely doing it on to wind. Therefore, I didn't put the gear down on my last single engine approach until turning final. Of course, the exami we had pulled the landing gear circuit breaker and the gear stayed up and locked. He asked me what I intended to do, and I said we're going to land gear up. Surprised, he asked why. I answered it was 110 degrees, we were low, the prospects of a single engine go around were not good, and I didn't want to take a chance on losing control with my head down manually extending the gear at low altitude. He said OK, good decision, you have your gear back, and pushed the breaker in. I selected gear down, got three green, then said: besides, it's not my airplane. He paused, then laughed like crazy til we touched down. Yep, I passed.

I'm lucky, besides always doing the check list for gear down (3 green lights), I can't even slow down my Glasair 1RG for flap extension speed until I get the gear down ie. below 140 mph. This bird is so slick, it's almost impossible to slow her down without being "dirty" with the gear down first. Very difficult to forget the gear, but obviously nothing is impossible, so always do "GUMP" check.

Congratulations on your multi-engine rating!! Also thanks for your honesty on why you didn't pass on your first time around. During my multi training the running joke was "you pay for two engines but you only get to use one!" On every one of my four two hour plus training flights we did a couple of single engine landings, VMC demos and at least one single engine instrument approach. Because of this, flying on a single engine became second nature and was no big deal for me on the check ride. The other maneuvers were no big deal either because when both the engines on a twin are working it flies just like a heavy single. Again great episode and I look forward to the "saving of the 310."

It has been many years since I was an active instructor but glad to hear the instructors and examiners are doing their jobs. The 180 hp Lycomings give you some decent performance margins on the Apache but any twin requires a level of skill and knowledge that can be a big step for many single engine pilots. A key word to consider before takeoff is what to do WHEN an engine fails and not just IF one fails. I used the 310P for most of the multi engine instruction. At that time I believe it had the lowest insurance rates of any light twin, possibly due to its good single engine performance. As mentioned, I also liked the original 310 for its handling. Of course it had lower gross weight and slightly lower cruising speed than the later models. Keep aviating, keep entertaining. Hope to see you at KOSH this year.

Thanks for being so candid and explaining what went wrong. Lets everyone see that it doesn't always go the way you want it to. It's a bummer like you said, but you took it well. Glad someone was watching out for you! The examiner obviously missed it too :O woops.
