10:26 Keep in mind, most past Avatars don't even start learning other elements until they're 16, and they spend years devoted to each element. Korra is 17 and has mastered 3. She's definitely being bratty about it, but she doesn't comprehend how an element can be difficult to learn since she was so gifted at the others.
It's easy to forget that learning the elements is supposed to take years when we watched Aang nearly master them in less than 1 lol

When you think about it, Korra’s had a completely different experience to every Avatar we’ve known.
According to the old rules, the Avatar was told of their identity at age 16, and traveled the world to find bending teachers.
Korra has known since age 3, and apparently grew up in a guarded compound near her hometown, having her bending teachers brought to her.
She’s the shelteredest of sheltered teens. The whole world outside her compound and her own role in it is made up of nothing but stories. It’s going to take a lot of mistakes and reality checks to get her to where our favorite globetrotting monk was at age 13.

    • @corystanish
      @corystanish Год назад +14

Usually they didn't even need to travel the world to find bending teachers. Their bending masters tended to be selected and ready to go for when the Avatar was discovered. Like, Kyoshi's bending teachers were really just Avatar Kuruk's Team Avatar buddies.

Somewhat correct I think but also not entirely right, it was customary to reveal the avatars identity at age 16, meaning that they lived a pretty normal life (in one location) up until that age. If korra is only like 16/17 at the start of the show that would only be slightly longer (living in one location) than the other avatars, only like a year if even. Remember Roku didn’t travel/live in the other kingdoms to train until much later. He spent years mastering his second element, meaning that he had only experienced 2 of the 4 cultures even by the time he was well into his 20’s

I would argue that Korra has a point that Tenzin isn’t a very good teacher. As Korra said herself, air is the element of freedom yet she is meant to be confined to a single island while being surrounded by a huge city she hasn’t gotten to explore yet.
I think this episode helps set up both Korra and Tenzin as flawed characters and I really enjoy that about their relationship.

For example, Korra was in zone 3, but since mako and Bolin were still in zone 1, they couldn't advance, if mako and Bolin were pushed to zone 2, the enemy would get the green light to advance into their zone 1

Here's how pro-bending works: (1) Every round lasts 3 minutes max. (2) Whichever team advanced the most zones before timer ends wins the round. (3) Knocking all players out is an automatic game win.
It's the best of 3 rounds. Even if a team wins 2 in a row, the third round is always played because there's the chance of a team getting knocked out. A player getting pushed back a zone doesn't mean the team is pushed back. All 3 need to be pushed back for the opposing team to advance a zone.
Imagine both Team A and Team B have players in zones 1, 2, and 3...
    - If Team A were to knock the enemy player back from zone 1 to 2, they would take Team B's zone 1. This also causes a small reset with positioning. Team B's players would now all get placed in zone 2 (even the player who was in zone 3). Team A would now control their 3 zones and all their players would start in Team B's zone 1. Team A would win this round so long as all 3 of their players don't get knocked out of Team B's zone 1.
    - Another option would be to target Team B's player in zone 3. It's a riskier move because they're the furthest away, but knocking them out would mean they're out for the remainder of the round (even if Team B were to advance forward a zone).

@@Fipul30 To be fair, TLOK covered a fair bit of the holes that ATLA itself had. For example, it had a better explanation of how bending came to be than just animals and the moon teaching people which was kinda a brain dead reason with a so many holes.
Another hole is that, how in a world where people can literally manipulate elements are they so technologically slow. TLOK fixed that by quickly bringing about a longtime needed industrial revolution.
All around I think BOTH shows are flawed and in fact I find more plot holes in ATLA than TLOK. Like the finale of ATLA was filled with ALOT of plot holes.

So from what ive gathered from watching the show the rules for pro bending are:
-push your opponent back with your element, with restrictions on how you can bend like no using shit like a water whip to grab and throw people
-if you get pushes back over a line youre locked into that zone, and fouls can get you pushed back, this is on a player by player basis which is how korra was in zone 3 but the others were zone 1
-if all 3 players get pushed back then the other team can advance and the new "middle" is the front of the new zone
-the point for each round is based on remaining players and i think the zone theyre in is a tie breaker, aka if its 3v3 left but korra is zone 3 while rest are zone 1 the opponent would get the point
-if all 3 players are knocked off in the same round then thats a knockout and an automatic victory.

The way I like to think about the kids of our ATLA characters are that they mainly inherited one aspect of their parent’s personality: Tenzin with Aang’s zen-ness and Lin with Toph’s stubbornness; you’ll see more when you meet the other kids. Can’t disagree though Tenzin got a big stick up his bum but understandable cause he’s got to shoulder the pressure of preserving the entire culture of airbenders.

  • @corystanish
    @corystanish Год назад +4

The rules of pro bending are actually completely clear; they released a PDF of the rulebook on the Legend of Korra website when the show first came out.
The players each get pushed back into different zones separately. So when Korra being pushed back to zone 3 means that Korra is stuck in zone 3, She's not allowed to move forward past the red line, but Mako and Bolin can stay in zone 1 until they get pushed back themselves, and if they pushed everybody out of zone 1 then the opposite team can move into that space.
The Platypus Bears were trying to keep the brothers busy while they singled out Korra to knock her out and force the boys to fight them 2 on 3.

Nothing in her training ever prepared her for having to stay within a zone, there weren't necessarily rules against going for headshots, there weren't limits on how long you could shoot a stream of water at someone (maximum 1 second burst in the pro bending ring). So, one important aspect of pro-bending is that you can only bend the earth discs in your own zone, and you can only bend water that is in the grates in front and at the back of your zone. When the announcer talks about them running out of juice, that's what they mean. It's not that the benders are tired, but rather that they have nothing left to bend. Fire is obviously the exception to this, as they don't need any external source to fuel them.
If you look online you can find a full rulebook on the rules of pro-bending, including the scoring system and what constitutes a legal hit (no headshots with earth and fire, no continuous streams of fire or water for more than one second, water must remain liquid, no reshaping/breaking the earth discs, etc).

You can go backwards, but not forward outside of your zone, unless one is empty in front of you. One player must remain in the center most zone they control or they lose it to the other team. You can gain it back by pushing them back out of your zone. The idea is to keep pushing them back to the smaller zone and off the back. Each round has a time limit. Three rounds win the match, with a sudden death if it ends in a 2 to 2 draw. If you can knock all three players off the back in any single round, you win the match automatically, regardless of how many rounds you happened to be behind.
I hope this helps you understand the rules better.

It's not really at all fair to say it's Korra's fault that she's 16 and hasn't bent air when literally no other Avatar, besides Aang, has bent another element besides their natural element until after they're 16. And Aang didn't until he was 12, mostly because they told him early and he almost got himself killed. She is literally ahead of every Avatar before her.
I mean, Kyoshi, one of the best Avatars in history, was a horrible Earthbender. So much so she wasn't even on the radar to be the Avatar.

I watched this when I was 7 and have seen other react to Korra recently. I think the reason why she didn't learn air bending sooner was bc she was busy with the other elements. It's not like she never saw Tenzin growing up training, ig she just prioritized which ones she wanted first. It's not her fault really that she didn't learn air bending earlier, like Tenzin said the hardest one is the opposite of her personality. Korra is hot headed, stubborn so it's obvious fire will be the easiest. Water is also easy due to being apart of the water tribe.

Korra got knocked back to zone 3, but the brothers hadn't, so enemy team can't advance yet untill all 3 are pushed back.

Although I like personally love boxing as a sport, I didn't like what they did to bending for this series - where all elements were stripped of any individuality and it's basically just boxing (minus tenzin).
Maybe it was easier to animate - or cheaper because they didn't need to hire a martial arts master to give life to all the different bending styles through different martial arts. My girlfriend back in college was blind and she actually learned Praying-mantis kung fu growing up from a young age (before avatar last airbender even existed) which is the same martial-arts style that Toph's earth bending mimics, because it actually had deep roots to blind practitioners, and some styles were supposedly created by blind martial artists.
It's a little sad that you don't really need to really train or find a master because all it boils down to is - all you need to do to bend any element.. is just punch. Air, water, fire, earth - it's all the same and it doesn't matter, just punch.

The pacing in the first season is really wacky because they were only greenlit for this single season, meaning they effectively had to stuff _all_ the characters' personal arcs and fit _as much_ of everything else as possible into 12 episodes. To put that into perspective, they had half the length of a single season from AtLA to tell the overarching narrative of AtLA.
The Avatar team is talented. They know their shit. If they were given the go-ahead from the get-go, I have absolutely no doubt in my mind they'd cooked something amazing.

I think Korra has that feel also. The first season is slower but you get a feel for the characters and the plot of how the show is going to go. Just stick with it please
