I was one of about 50 people in the crowd watching this match. Even then Sinner's forehand was something to behold. I was sad when the Budapest Open was unable to continue to exist. I loved all three events and got to see some great matches and early appearances of players like Pouille, Berrettini and Sinner.
@@SiggyHaroldson why not? It's a normal tennis tournament with a then largely unknown 17 year old playing. These things happen everyday, all over the world in tennis.
Actually he’s playing the same game now as well. But with more power, more precision, more fitness, supreme movement on court. It’s great to see how compressed his forehand and backhand were at 17 and the power he was able to generate.
@carkod I don't see what's the surprise here, I was still 140 cm at 16 years old, and slowly reached 178 cm at 25 years old (when I stopped growing in height, now it's just weight added each year :P !)
That's the curse of being better than everybody else ig. I'm sure he has a good support system in his friends and family who make him feel good about his achievements. He was always going to excel at whatever he chose and we're lucky he chose tennis. I hope someone rises up to his level and poses some real challenge
How many times does he have to tell you people! Sinner has repeated it a thousand times on court, at press conferences, in public, that the end goal is not just for winning. or money; these are simply by-products. It's the work for work's sake and he has determined that the only value in it, is in its ability to be adapted, improved, etc. I thought he made it quite clear to everyone time and time again that he is really just a simple tennis player whose finds life's only true value in family, friends, food etc.. He keeps saying this! Why does no one believe him?!?
I find it hilarious that valkusz is giving it his all with the grunts and then sinner just thwarts it back like he's a well oiled ball launching machine. I mean this as a compliment, but dude's a cyborg
He looked really young, I remember in 2019-20 in Italy we talked about that a lot: you could tell he had enormous margins for improvement because he wasn't even fully developed. Like Alcaraz at 15 looked older than Sinner at 17 (also he started playing tennis continously only 4 years before)
Think it’s objectively worse than it is now. Too high toss, and lacking the fluidity of the motion he has now. The hitch when he takes the racket back also isn’t great
@@manumonogenis 100% I think it was genius for him to change to a platform style serve just to gain that fluid motion, then changing back to a pinpoint stance like he used to use was very easy
That's precisely why people mistakenly believed in the past (and still do today) that other youngsters, like Alcaraz or Rune, had a higher ceiling. Nope, Sinner has the highest ceiling, having started playing tennis seriously much later. And the rate at which he's currently improving is there to show it.
you can probably point out a non-tennis player like me by the fact that I can't see any difference between such a match (except for the number of spectators) and a grand slam match :-D All I see is crazy hard shots
I would say he is the player that improved more on the tour. Alcaraz at 16 years plays pretty much the same as now, just more fit and a few things, but sinner changed entirely
Nah Sinner was always good. You can see it in this video and the fact he won the Next Gen Finals this same year. He just hit the wall with his old coaching set up, Simone and Darren took him to the next level.
Comments like this are so dumb. AO posts 8 minute highlight videos of every match in addition to the shorter 3 minute videos. If you’re a big enough tennis fan that you’re watching this video, it is unfathomable to me that you wouldn’t know that.
I don't think you could tell much at this age. groundies definitely more compressed, which pays compliment to his evolution of the forehand shot (he lags it so much now). the biggest thing was his movement and ground speed. fairly ridiculous.
@ Not funny I didn't laugh. Your joke is so bad I would have preferred the joke went over my head and you gave up re-telling me the joke. To be honest this is a horrid attempt at trying to get a laugh out of me. Not a chuckle, not a hehe, not even a subtle burst of air out of my esophagus.
