    I was a student teacher last year! Just a few suggestions- make her her own space in the classroom if possible (could even just be a caddy with basic supplies) and introduce her as a coteacher, not a student intern (at least not until later in the year). Those things that made me feel most welcome!!! ❤️ allow her to do some things independently, like teaching for a whole day without you (if your district allows that) , maybe taking a day and allowing her to sub, letting her run a small group, allow her to implement her own behavior incentives + lesson ideas. You’ll be the best Mentor ever!!!!!❤️

      I was in college, not high school but still applies!

    • @wfurlong1
      @wfurlong1 6 лет назад +20

      The term coteacher can be misleading to students and parents (and even other staff); coteacher implies you are at the same level as a teacher which is misleading, since it implies a level of authority and education which as an intern you don’t have - but I see what you’re getting at. Maybe teacher in training is better?

    • @melissap.9548
      @melissap.9548 6 лет назад +16

      I agree with Wendy. Also I don’t think she should be teaching for a whole day independently as a high school intern, that’s more of a college internship thing (I had a high school internship as well). Subbing as a high schooler definitely wouldn’t be allowed. Having her teach small groups would be great though!

      My mentor introduced me by name and said I was there to help out deliver content, saves confusion between titles, my students didnt realise till much later that I was a student and commented that they thought i was a teacher as they thought i was so good which was really nice to hear x

    • @faithcote9331
      @faithcote9331 6 лет назад +11

      I didn’t even know interning in high school was a thing- so I didn’t realize the intern was a HS student. Obviously, I don’t think a high school student should sub or be left alone with an entire class of students, however, I do thing a college student is more than capable.
      Secondly, I was in a mobile for my student teaching and my mentor still found a space for me. It’s doable, and in my opinion should be done for all student teachers. A HS student is different but I think even just a cup of pencils and a sticky note pad would be a nice gesture- we should all, as educators, look to welcome and inspire the future generation of educators.
      Lastly, I should’ve clarified- I did not mean that you should lie to parents about being a student teacher. I simply meant that portraying to the students that you and your student teacher/ intern are a team and that the intern is no less of a teacher than you are is important. I’m NOT saying Michelle would ever do that. I’m just saying it’s important to make the intern feel valued and like an equal, and to not be demeaning towards them (not like any of you or michelle ever would).
      These are just my opinions, and I do think they are important but please don’t take them the wrong way. I simply know how inspired and welcomed I felt and want others to feel the same way. ❤️

    Michelle, I appreciate your channel because I’m a homeschool mom and I take so much from you that I can apply to teaching at home. I also love to watch you because you embody every teacher I had, who made me want to be a teacher. I ended up choosing a different profession because the only thing I wanted more than to be a teacher was to be a mom. At times I felt sad that I didn’t go into teaching. Now that I’m a homeschool mom I have the best of both worlds!

You have amazing ideas, your organization is on point, and your love and enthusiasm for your students is infectious. Hello there. I just wanted to make a comment in reference to what you said at the end of your vlog about doing RUclips to help other teachers. I have really been enjoying watching your channel. This will be my first year in my own classroom and watching your videos has been very helpful even though our experiences are going to be completely different. You see, I will be the lead teacher for a 2-3yr old class of kiddos with visual impairment. I just thought I’d stop to say thanks for sharing your life with me in hopes that it will make your teacher heart very happy.

    I wait for your vlogs every week as I'm currently at university in Scotland for primary teaching. I begin my third year on Tuesday and I am so happy with the course I have chosen, I couldn't imagine doing anything other than teaching. Your vlogs give me ideas for when I go on my placements in schools and whenever I'm feeling stressed they make me realise how it is all going to be worth it in the end when I become a fully qualified teacher, so thank you.

    2nd graders can have an organized notebook in general, I dont see why a 4th grader cant. A tip, I attached a ribbon to the notebook like a bookmark on a planner, so they can have control of the pages. By the end of the year they dont even need it ^^

    I love your style as an educator! Have you ever thought of having a student leader in your classes? I set it up when I was in a sheltered ESOL classroom. I would get non-english speakers, and that added a whole new level to the, "OMGGoodness I have a new student" feeling. So, I let the students apply for the position. Their job was to help set up the new student's supplies, binders, journals, and be their procedure buddy for the first few days. I made a checklist to keep them on task, and made the student aware of where everything was located in my room.
    Then once i broke students into an independent task or group activities, i could then focus on that student with more success. It was a game changer!!

      I teach children and teenagers learn English. The position I posted about was also referenced in the past. I did not post to debate politics. If you are upset over the public school system, I encourage you to speak to your local representatives. Teachers have so many things on their plates. I just volleyed something that helped me with a similar situation she mentioned.

      mountaingal homemaker I’m glad you are happy with your education choices!
      What the other person stated was the law, not an opinion.
      This RUclipsr mentions so often that she is about positivity and making the best out of all situations. She works very hard to give ALL students what they need, and that’s what good educators do! We teach kids, we love kids, so in their future they can teach and love others too! We don’t judge.
      I do hope you continue to help educators make education a positive place for children and encouraging your local government know your opinions on education. It takes a village!

    I find your channel and the content you create very helpful, inspirational, and motivational. Personally, I am not a primary teacher. I work at a childcare center and I take care of infants. However, when I found your channel, it completely inspired me to become a better teacher and take a whole new approach to my work. I started finding new ways to organize the infant classroom and make the space more inviting and fun. Watching your weekly classroom vlogs motivates me for the week ahead and encourages me to be the best teacher that I can be. I look up to you as a role model, for sure! Hey Michelle, I have been watching you for about a year now. I am 20 years old and I am not a teacher and i am not in University for teaching either... nursing actually. I just wanted to come on here and say I don't know what it is that draws me to your channel but what ever the reason is I love your videos. There is something so calming and enjoyable about the way you talk and I cant wait to carry the same love and positivity into my career path as you have in yours. Thats all i wanted to say. Thanks for making vlogs i love them.

    Even though I’m not going into teaching over the past year and a bit your videos have not only provided me with entertainment but also an insight on how much effort teachers put into our education every day. Also side note every time I see anything to do with sloths I think of you, they really are an adorable animal😂😂.

    I am so impressed with how much time and effort you put into teaching and your students. That is so very rare...at least in the school districts where I’ve had experiences in. Thank you everything you do for these young people. I hope you feel better soon!!

    I’m the same when getting a new student (the feeling of being overwhelmed) but what’s makes the transition easier is when my other students take ownership of making the new student feel welcomed!

    Please do a video with advice for mentor teachers with interns/prac students and also advice for the prac student or intern coming into the classroom. If possible you should also do a sit down vlog with your intern (maybe a question and answer type vlog)

    I use a “class ambassador” who is responsible for helping get the new student set up, is their buddy in class the first week, and explains what’s going on and what they need to do. I have one for each of my classes. It’s saved me.
