Awesome video all around! Thank you. I really enjoy the rotary/8 content. I bought a 06 Shinka last year, had a baseline done (can't remember the CF) but only posted 140whp. MIL was on, and I've been replacing vacuum lines, sensors, going to be going back this summer.
Great content. HEADER IS LIFE! I have an 07 gt with just about all there is. Act prolite flywheel and counter balance, ls2 coil swap, full exhaust with agency power dual res mid pipe and cat back, lightweight pulleys and the full package of mishimoto cooling items. Baseline figures were right at 180.8 whp. Chris at rotary performance in garland tx dyno tuned her using mazdaedit on a cool but rainy day. Mustang dyno but I'm unaware of any rate if correction. After several hours and nearly a dozen fourth gear pulls she put down 188.6 whp and 132.5 ftlbs. I went in with that sweet goal of a nice round 200 fully expecting to at least come closer. Engine is in great health with low miles. When speaking with chris about the results as soon as he started talking i knew where he was heading. Volumetric efficiency being our weak point. This being explained to me as a measure of air in vs out. My car was running at 90-95 percent while you would want this at 100-107 percent. The one part i didn't spend what i should of was the header. It was the first mod i acquired and was a "hook up" from a friend. It was clearly not the best put together thing but was much lighter than stock and looked better. Point being... With all the mods and care i have taken as an owner, i still couldn't come quite close enough to my power goal. Racing beat.. Here i come :)
188 whp on a mustang dyno is probably about the same as what my car made. Mustang dynos always read lower than DynoJets. What header do you have at the moment?

It depends on what testing methods you use, and when you do it. If you remove the ancillary items and use an engine that has just bedded in, you can get around 181KW with the ECU firmware that Mazda never actually released. In a closed, controlled room, a fairly fresh engine gets about what mazda said, but it doesn't take long for the horses to leave the stable.
Antimation Studios I think this is true for a number of car manufacturers. For instance the highly publicized volkswagon, and then Hyundai. They just make numbers look good for a particular market. Let’s say gas mileage for sedans, bhp for sports cars etc.
Drivetrain power loss is about 20%. With 238HP at the flywheel that puts you at 190WHP and you made about 10WHP more, so your flywheel HP should be right around 250HP
Hello Nate, I too like you would quote a % for tranny loss; however be careful that's not very accurate. Take high hp cars 400-600+hp they don't loose 80-120hp through the drive train.
It's one of those things people don't realize about these cars. They are actually remarkably well tuned stock. There is very little to drag out of it with out FI. Thanks for the videos Quin!
My old tuner did a rb26 swap in his rx8. It was a wiring nightmare. It took for ever to complete and get it running right. By the time the car was done the owner was so over the whole thing that he sold it when it was finished and running.
What with the smoke on decel? Either way good info on the modifications and Mazda Edit. I will be using VersatTuner which appears to have full control of the AFR's.
Mark any piggy-back type tuning is going to clash with the stock ECU parameters. This is why I just run standalone ECUs in everything. If passing emissions weren't really a concern anymore I'd just throw a Haltech in there and call it a day.
That's damn good for also being emissions compliant. Have you thought about the BHR long tube header for "some torque"? Thinking of going Haltech or Adaptronic standalone? Thoughts on E85 for the rotary? Stoked for the s2k build. Glad your 8 is at an exceptional level of health. My own 8 won't be ready until I get back and I put it all together. Current plan is BHR long tube header, BHR resonator, HKS hi-power single exit exhaust, AEM intake and Adaptronic PnP modular ecu with E85 flex sensor for future potential use.
I looked at the BHR, but it's quite expensive for a mild steal header. I also wanted to be able to run the big RB resonators to keep the noise levels down. Eventually I am going to retire this car as a daily and put a 20b or something in it in which case I'd run a Haltech. Not a fan of E85, I like the convenience of 93 pump. On an NA application the e85 will allow you to run more ignition advance to make a few more hp, but I don't think that is good for longevity of the motor. I'd be interested to see your build as it unfolds though. Keep us updated brother!
I'll keep the updates coming and thanks for replying. I'm deploying in a week so project start is pushed until I get back. I'll have suspension, intake, engine, and steering wheel mods (thank you for the video btw) waiting for me. I'm a little skeptical of E85 as well, but the tuner I'm going to use is doing extensive r&d on it for the RX-8 specifically right now. I guess I'll have time to wait and see. Also while I'm away I get to math out how to shove 11" wide wheels into those awesome arches without flattening the pinch weld on the inside. Gotta squeeze 315's to keep up with the national prepped BMW's in DSP. Have a good week. 🤙
Nice vid and nice gain. My brother in law owns a rx8 and man it's not super fast on the straights but get it in the twisties and man it's fun and fast. I love my fd but that rx8 chasis stock for stock is better than my fd. Quinn I ran against a modded 02 vette z06 and pulled on him. Now a modded 08 z06 well that thing is badass. If I ever got tired of my fd an 08 z06 it will be. For the money that 08 z06 is great value for its performance. I am a sucker for 911 also. Damn so many great cars and not enough garage nor money. I want all three. Lol.
The RX-8 chassis and suspension is just on a whole other level. I still think the RX-8 has the best all mechanical suspension to ever leave the factory on a production car.
mines just failed its mot on emissions, the garage was a bit puzzled, no engine lights were on so they checked the o2 sensors they were ok when they took the cat off they found there was nothing in it, it had disintigrated,so they put a new 1 on, I think it runs better with 1 on, is it just me or does it need other changes as well as just having no cat
Great video brother! Nice seeing a healthy Rx8 do it's thing and your tuning seems to be on point. As much tracking as you do, have you considered doing a compression test? Curious to see the how well the engine is holding up.
Thanks buddy. I've actually only put this car on track once for an episode of the Slip Angle. I haven't done a compression test, but it shows no signs of compression loss. Even with a warm engine, it fires right up with minimal cranking.
Mazda ECU will always try to overwrite. Your changes are seen as Baseline to ECU. You have to drive various speed and restart for 40+ miles for it to settle into the tune
The Slip Angle awesome! If you ever do a rebuild, or have one rebuilt, it would be great to see you do some porting etc and then see the difference in power etc
Always use tuners who have ample experience on rotaries specially renesis engines for rx8. The rx8 engine is very different to the rx7 and distribute heat differently.
Maybe a tuner who is familiar with Rotaries and understands their leading / trailing spark, but as far as the actual tuning, the process for tuning the Renesis is no different than an older 13b.
@@TheSlipAngle but it is different. Exhaust ports on both engines is so different that heat accumulates on one side of the engine. This is a physical limit to how much you can push performance. This was done with the focus of mpg to appeal to more mainstream consumers. The 13b rew hasnt this problem.
Yes, the RX-8 got rid of peripheral exhaust ports in favor of side exit. This creates more heat for the side seals. I've talked about this in previous videos and said that I don't think the Renesis is a good choice for a track day motor where there will be long periods of sustained high RPM. This is more a limitation of the engine design and not the ECU tuning.
Would be interesting to see 100-200 kph or 60-120 mph times. I think it is most accurate way to compare. Mine did 19,5 sec 100-200kph(3rd and 4th gear) when it was fully stock with cat.
Hey Quinn, I'm not sure if you are aware of Chris Muscat's ITB 20B engine, which has a simple yet ingenious variable trumpet system that changes the length of the stacks through the rev range. The took inspiration from the 787B Le Mans winning 4 Rotor Mazda. Given what you have learnt on this car, and the RX-7 build you have going on, I think this system could be your next project in the pursuit of ultimate response. ruclips.net/video/04uhsLqKwF8/видео.html&
Oh, and here is an explanation from Engineering Explained of how it works using a similar system on the La Ferrari V12 : ruclips.net/video/I_bOGqeHYlM/видео.html

Anyone tried an Odula throttle body? They port it out and replace the butterfly for more gains, I am super keen for this!
Go for the Adaptronic eMod013 ECU, it's way easier to tune than MazdaEdit. Waiting to see your updated fuel and timing maps in the next episode :)
Is it a standalone or piggy back?
@@TheSlipAngle : standalone, fully pnp, you only need a wideband kit with it.
Hi, what elaborations have you made to this machine?
I still think the RX-8 has the best all mechanical suspension to ever leave the factory on a production car.
i see that you dont have a rx7 fc,,,what is your opinion about it?
mines just failed its mot on emissions, the garage was a bit puzzled, no engine lights were on so they checked the o2 sensors they were ok when they took the cat off they found there was nothing in it, it had disintigrated,so they put a new 1 on, I think it runs better with 1 on, is it just me or does it need other changes as well as just having no cat
That ending tho... nice car brother. Cnt wait for the s2k man!
;)
Yeah it's a big annoyance
@@TheSlipAngle What's your favorite stand-alone for this platform?
Gr8t video!
At what rpms do each air valves open?
I don't remember each RPM off hand but you can see the dips on the graph where they are opening.
funny how the guys at 3:30 are having a conversation then the RX8 gets into high RPM and they stop lol, rotary power
Respekt brap lyfe lol
200 is light ... 232bhp after rebuild and ethanol conversion for my r3
I suppose rx-8 is not the most popular but I am still waiting for the part 2 on Mazda edit :D
I don't think there is going to be part 2 :P
What kind of wheels are those? They look sick
Enkei Kojin
@@TheSlipAngle thank you. U absolutely love your vids. Very informative.
Anytime. Thank you!
So is this the donor motor for na miata 😉
NA Miata needs a 13b with peripheral intake and exhaust ports for extra brap ;)
Has this engine had any port work done?
Unopened original motor.
The Slip Angle awesome! If you ever do a rebuild, or have one rebuilt, it would be great to see you do some porting etc and then see the difference in power etc
Is this in a 4port or 6port renesis ?
6
These cars are cheap right now. Time to buy before the price starts going up!
Josh C my brothers step son got one for 1500 but it’s already hurt.
Josh C it runs ok but it’ll need to be rebuilt sooner or later
Yeah I teat drove a 2003 z06 before I bought my s2k. That shit is too fast for me..I'd do something stupid in it
Anyone know what rims those are on the rx8
Would be interesting to see 100-200 kph or 60-120 mph times. I think it is most accurate way to compare. Mine did 19,5 sec 100-200kph(3rd and 4th gear) when it was fully stock with cat.
I'm going to do some VBOX runs with it soon.
You didnt do a street port right?
Nope, stock unopened motor.
@@TheSlipAngle well 195 whp without any porting is very imoressive, even if the motor has ~30k miles. Will you ever port the engine?
@4:40 yo is that an r3 ?
Mazdaspeed 3
It's a Shinka Edition
What are those wheels??
Enkei Kojin
How many miles on it?
43k
Knew that shop looked familiar...
It’s a nice beautiful car especially the s2. They’re just under powered saddenly. Unless you swap to a rew 13 turbo
Looks like ya got some less than perfect compression there lol
Want to go fast! Go think aircraft technology! Then again, you can only get what your engine can muster in its frame base..
What rims are those?
Enkei Kojin
Did you camber the car? I'm getting an RX8 myself and looking to do the same work you're doing to yours.
I'd like to know all of the mods you've done to your whip.
Maybe :)
I saw this lol. Pretty cool, but a little more complicated of a setup that I would prefer to deal with.
Good "bolt on mod" is an REW swap lol
LMAO :)
Got my SA22C ready for this summer! ruclips.net/video/9wxpHdqcxYk/видео.html
Brap brap
I am just bias towards rew swaps. 470whp. 😝
lol

Buuuuullllll shit!!!!! The RX8 does not run a sub 15 at any elevation.
Like I have something to gain by lying about that? Better question does it really matter? Like 20 people actually care about these cars.
