I think that it was portrayed quite well that they were even and qui gon had the upper hand for a bit. It's weird to me to hear a sith speak highly of someone else but at the same time, I know they recognize and respect power when they see it
maul always spoke highly of plo koon and was forbidden to engage with yoda as well as tii in legends. the sith saw the jedi as fodder but they were generally afraid of certain council members
Facts even sidious was wary of direct conflict with yoda cos he recognised his equal in opposite doctrine. Sidious knew as powerfull as he was if someone was gonna clock his ticket it was most likely grand master yoda.
@@darthraki6436 yeah nobody other then sidious would have stood a chance and they knew it. Yoda was essentially the boogeyman and to lesser extents Mace Windu and Obi Wan by the end of the war.
well, maul is quite different from the average sith
@@Smoothalcoholic I wouldn't say that they were afraid of any of the Jedi, Council members or not, as much as they were "respectful of the shear strength, power and prowess" or certain Jedi, the way that the Jedi themselves were aware of the danger of taking the Blade Skills of the of certain Sith, to lightly.
Remember also, that both Jedi and Sith had whole ratings systems for the skill one could show with a Blade, as well as one's strength and abilities one had with the "Force", albeit the Dark or Light side.
I'm reminded of a simple lesson I heard in a history class. "There was a time when some people considered it cowardly to use projectile weaponry in battle. Guess what happened to those people?" If you are unwilling to win at any cost, you will lose to those who are, regardless of your righteousness.
I'm also reminded of a Star Trek quote, "In war, there is nothing more honorable than victory." - Worf, warning about potential cloaked Klingon warships.
That said, I could understand Maul being dissatisfied or disappointed with the kill, not being able to simply overpower or overcome Qui-Gon's skill. However, there's no shame in stunning an opponent to create an opening; especially, when death is on the line.
I don't see any problems with the hilt stun specifically and of course the Sith are going to do whatever anyway so you want to be prepared for that, but I think that throwing morality out the window and becoming like them is in fact cowardly because it shows you don't have sufficient skill to win the hard and right way and leaves you just a survivor, not someone who won with their values intact
It's very Sithlike thinking and I really don't agree with it
If using children as hostages was the best way to win a battle for example, did you really deserve to win?
I think there is a lot of myth about the topic of ranged weapons being seen as dishonorable. For example, this is often said of the Samurai, but the Samurai had always valued archery above all else in actual battle for most of their history with the sword being a backup weapon until peace had already been mostly secured in the later tokugawa shogunate where it was the weapon more closely associated with them as they would patrol cities with them.
Even firearms were typically only seen as dishonorable in propaganda by those at a disadvantage and not in a serious fashion.
in the end, the winner is the one who is alive. nothing else matters even remotely close to being alive at the end of a fight.
@@keithsvenson568 Except in a case like there where Qui Gon won the long game against the Sith... And while not alive Qui Gon was not quite dead either...
@@keithsvenson568 but those winners displays themselves as the biggest warrior even tho they would die against someone,# who has skill.
This makes absolute sense. Not only was Qui Gon equal to Maul in lightsaber skill, but had the favor of the force because how in flow he was in the present moment. Qui Gon lost because he got tired.
If he was so in flow with the force he would have not tired
@@rastaboy_gamesnstuff7778 even the Force has it's limits when it comes to physical age, it can only aid them so much before they're age has an effect. Same with Dooku, he was stronger when he fought Yoda than when he fought Anakin the second time.
@@NavyDave219 Except for the fact that Dooku was stronger when he fought Anakin and Obi-Wan Kenobi. He was simply ordered by Palpatine to not kill Anakin during the duel. Dooku made a single mistake that cost him the duel. He held back for too long and he prodded Anakin too much. For other Jedi, Dun Möch would off-balance them and allow Dooku to take advantage of their sloppiness. However, he did not quite know what he would unleash.
There is also the fact that Dooku is a Force capacitor and Anakin is a Force conduit. Basically, Dooku can control the Force more minutely and precisely, telekinetically moving an opponent's blade just that couple of inches away from his blade so that he can strike them. But, this precision and attention to detail comes at the expense of longevity, as this can actively drain his reserves. Anakin is a conduit, because he just lets it flow out of him. As Dooku loses his strength over the course of a fight, Anakin ramps up in output. Dooku possessed a superior acquired power and skill with the Force, and was a better duelist overall. But, age and his fighting style proved to be his downfall. Another point is that (much like Anakin's friends and associates) Dooku did not quite know how much of a monster Anakin could be when pushed to his limits.
Besides, the Clone Wars lasted three short years, and Dooku maintained a consistent performance across the board. He was undeniably one of the most powerful beings of his era, as he was stated in and out of universe to be Mace Windu's direct equal. There's a lot more context to Dooku's defeat than just "he atrophied and Anakin surpassed him". The same can really be said of any duel in the films, but this is one of the most packed cases.
I don't think he was tired, just surprised. While Qui Gon had participated in several battles before, none of them were against a real opponent and as a Maverick himself he probably never expected another lightsaber duelist to pull something he didn't expect. In that way, I think Maul's tactic here was probably far more fitting than he gave credit, that Qui Gon would go out due to an unconventional move.
@@NavyDave219 That doesn't work when Jedis like Yoda can use the force to extend their life spans and boost their physical capabilities.
All is fair when you are trying to win. It wasnt like Maul called in a 100 battle droids to shoot at Qui Gon. It was fair in my opinion and Qui Gon could have parried it but just didnt expect it. Just like what Obi Wan did in rebels.
He’s not mad at himself because he thinks he cheated he’s mad because he was to weak to beat qui-gon without using a cheap trick
Maul knows he has to use the trick to survive and win, but as a duelist I think he expected more of himself
He did in lego star wars ironically 😂😂
He got the win, but he did so besting his opponent by trickery rather than skill thus the win is a tainted one. For Maul, fighting Jinn was an honor and so to win this way was in his eyes, a disgrace.
@@tyronehuston1260 It was a jammy move. And unprofound move. (Making profound out of unprofound, deeply profound in un-profound way). Elongating/stretching out the meaningless like it's a life's moral lesson/teaching/philosophy/ethic. Meaning out of the meaningless/thing that SHOULDN'T have meaning type thing, lame. Skillfull opportunist perhaps, but jammy. Even puerile. He knows. Felt obi ones blade.
I didn’t realise how close Qua-gon came to beating Maul. I do really like the thought of Maul, while being a Sith and taking any opening he can, does have a sense of honour and respect for those who prove their skill in combat
Maul was brought up by sidious in the ways of the ancient sith warriors, its no surprise he would have a sense of warriors pride and honor when you consider this. The ancient sith were warriors and conquerers whe compared to the modern sith who focused mostly on guile and manipulation. Sideous did this because he wanted Maul not as a true sith and apprintice but as an assassin. So he gave him the old outdated teachings and all of their perceived weaknesses and that likely included this honor. Sideous wouldn't have thought twice about using cheap tricks to win cause that's kind of his entire mo when you think about it. Cheap Tricks and manipulation.
@@Jack-kn1mr Maul was his true apprentice and he was to be what Vader was, up until Maul was defeated and Sidious found out about Anakin at the end of TPM. He was an assassin and a Sith Lord, this is even evident when we look at how powerful he was at only 22 years old, all due to his training under Sidious which would have continued if he didn't fail.
Heard about darth malgus? Dude rocked up to the jedi temple on coruscant, killed all the jedi, then buried them afterwards out of respect.
Absolute mad lad
You have no idea! It’s implied that Qui-Gon would’ve killed Maul in the desert of Tatooine had he not had to flee the scene. Jinn was one of those masters that was hard to catalogue but regardless he most likely would’ve been grandmaster material had he lived
Being my favourite Jedi, Qui-Gon Jinn had a short time of life in the big screen, but still I'll give you my thoughts on this scene.
I believe that the main mistake he made was that he let himself become focused on Anakin's future way too much, to the extent that he lost his focus. If he had fallen back to Form III, he'd have exhausted Maul & he'd have easily killed him!
Unfortunately, his desire not to leave Anakin's future to chance made him reckless & more aggressive, than he should have been against a Form VII master. Juyo is a powerful form which no duelist should take lightly!
But did he know what Maul's form was tho

I agree with a previous video on this qui Gon is so in tune with the force he knew he was going to die before the battle even started
Knowing how Maul felt after he struck down Qui-Gon Jinn makes me respect him more as a warrior. He’s a Sith but sought to fight with honor against someone he deemed a worthy adversary. If he had stuck to that personal code of honor, his death was still was a guarantee but Master Jinn would’ve been the victor and then start training anakin Skywalker. Course after knowing the full text of the chosen one prophecy, I don’t think anakin would’ve fulfilled his destiny if maul died instead of qui-gon
Qui Gon had an opportunity to cut through the hilt before he was hit in the chin but it looked like the plot armor got him lol 😂
I mean, his saber was above his head with his weight moving backwards when he got hit and if you've ever fought you'd know shit can catch you off guard or out of nowhere when you aren't expecting it, even more telegraphed moves than the strike to his chin (which even in slow motion, wasnt very much) can catch you off balance. It was a genuine opening.
THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS
ITS U N F A I R
HOW CAN YOU BE ON THE COUNCIL AND NOT BE A MASTER?
Take a seat! Young Skywalker...
A win's a win. Elegance goes out the window when it comes to survival.
I like in Rebels the Obi-wan Mail fight, Obi wan switches his stances 2-3 times, form 1 form 3 (he thinks for a second) and then switches to form 4 baiting Maul to use that same “trick” he employed against Master Qui-Gon.
2:45 love that misspoke
Qui gon was another Jedi we don't get to hear much about excellent vid on him, would like to hear more on his fights through his history as well
"You are skilled, but this is not a dance."
Don't feel bad, Maul. After all "Any fight that you can walk away fro....".......oh right.
The Legends versions of Maul And Grievous are so similar in there mindsets when it comes to combat they are warriors at heart even before Maul became a sith he had a sense of honor to some degree just as Grievous did before he became a cyborg yeah.
One huge thing to keep in mind is that Darth maul was of the zabrak species who have 2 hearts meaning that he had unrivaled endurance wile in combat. He could wear down almost anyone which is essentially what he did to the 60 yr old master.
The existentialism of this dueling concept is amazing. I don't think someone like qui gon desired to "win" the duel. Just to survive it
ORDER 66
Pizzas?
Order 69 is better.
There is also that Maul got helped. In novelisation of first episode Qui-Gon repeatedly notice feeling of tiredness, and attributed it to aging. However, I think this was not the case, as jedi age slowly, and to contrast Mace Windu is older, yet remains in his prime throughout clone wars. So why then Qui-Gon feels that way? I think, and agait thah is just my theory, that he was attacked by Sidious trough force, was able to sense that something is not right, but was unable to identify the real source of problem, or rather was not concerned enough to dig into source of this feeling. That was a factor in his defeat, and if Maul was aware of this he would probably be much more pissed.
If Disney did that fight, Qui-Gon probably would have survived the stab to the abdomen, considering a wound to the stomach now seems to not be fatal, according to Disney. 🙄🙄
Qui gon is in the back talking about yeah wait till you meet my master... he gonna kick your ass and my ass for lol's...
Honor doesn't win wars, it wins you death. Before going into any fight, consider carefully if you are willing to do anything to win. If not, expect that you will lose if the opponent is willing.
I think that it would have been a complete wreck the other way. And what I mean by that is: if Obi Wan had been left alone with Maul, himself being a form 4 user at the time, he would have been more reserved and would have perhaps survived long enough for Qui Gon to get back into the fight. Remember, it wasn't until after Ep 1 that Obi Wan decided to pursue Form 3...aligning with this argument, a chance to rest would have done QGJ well and even if OWK did not survive, he would have ultimately killed Maul in the end anyway, and would have survived to train Anakin (arguably) in a better way, using the way of the Grey Jedi instead of forcing the religious fanaticism of the council on him.
We all know and love what did eventually become of the universe as a result. And OWK is a GOAT for me, but a small part of me does wish that the places had been swapped and we could have seen what became if QGJ had survived instead or alongside Kenobi.
Never doubt for a moment though that Maul didn't play a masterful game. He was well trained, and he did what he was put up to, minus one small, fatal loose end.
I would have liked to have seen a Maul vs Koon duel at one point but I guess they just never had the time to write that. Hell, I'd have settled with a Maul vs Fisto. But that is neither here nor there.
This video was interesting and it opens up my perspective on that particular duel.
I never looked at it before like it was something Maul was above doing. On top of doing because he was feeling he was losing the edge.
That gives me even more respect on Qui Gons abilities in this duel. I looked at it like it was kinda matched but Maul had him, almost toying with him.
Now this changes everything.
The visual storytelling of the duel on Naboo is surprisingly well executed.
The structure of this video sounds like you are looking for as many different ways to express the same thought as possible.
As a career army 19Delta and a lifelong martial artist you use whatever works and get out of there. Fights aren't about fairness, form or grace. Leave that for tournaments and Hollywood. Its about winning and living another day above ground period!
Maul was so strategic i that duel. Watch as he masterfully leads the jedi through a maze of lasers and hallways, separating them nearly the entire fight. Brilliant.
I personally think that if the original trilogy didn't exist, and the writer thus didn't have an outcome for this fight in mind yet, the chances of Qui Gon killing Maul are pretty much the same as it ending the way it did in the movies.
Qui-Gon actually quickly dispatched of Maul, but Obi-Wan tried to use force speed and fell down the reactor shaft. The entire saga from then on is actually Obi-Wan's coma induced halucinations.
sick video mang
In my opinion there is one problem with your theory. I agree that Darth Maul might’ve been ashamed of using the hilt of his saber, but in Star Wars Rebels Darth Maul tried to use that same move on Obi-Wan. That’s how Maul died, obi-Wan predicted his move.
i think that in a battle to the death, there's no such thing as a 'cheap trick'. everything is fair, and ultimately what matters is who lives, and who dies.
After reading the Jedi Apprentice books, going back to this fight only elevates Maul more, Qui-Gon is monstrously strong just from his imposing height, let alone the extra advantage using the Force provides.
It's a death match somebody has to go and you don't want it to be you
I'm gonna be honest, It constantly feels like Star Wars is in a constant state of trying to retcon past writing mistakes.
WHAT
Stand amongst the corpses of a 1000 dead knights and ask them if honour means anything........ The silence is your answer
If Maul didn’t take that opportunity he probably would’ve lost to both Obi wan and Qui gon or he would’ve killed Obi wan and still lost to an angered Qui gon.
I honestly thought Qui Gon could have taken Maul but had to adjust his style enough to keep Obi Wan in the fight or from taking the brunt of Mauls assault. Making himself more vulnerable by baiting maul in and away from Obi Wan. Though he may have underestimated how to the point Maul would be with that stab and not giving in so much to anger that his ego would be out of control. As aggressive as Maul may seem he was trained as an assassin and to capatilize in a more pragmatic way than a conventional sith. Being that Sidious focused more on Mauls efficiency rather than his knowledge of the dark side. As he was already considered expendable and not his ideal apprentice. I think Qui Gon's death came from the fact that he thought he would be fighting a more traditional sith rather than a sith assassin. I only see Obi Wan beating Maul as Maul pretty much is a very athletic fighter so he already expends alot of physical energy especially against higher caliber opponents. Qui Gon probably tired him out Enough for Obi Wan who is pretty athletic and relative in force ability to do maul in. Especially on his pseudo dark side adrenaline rush. Honestly if Obi Wan was never there Qui Gon would have definitely survived as when he got pushed back Qui Gon likely didn't have enough time to readjust if Maul Kept pressing him and wearing him down. It's not like Qui Gon is of the same physical stature of Maul as a Zabrak in his near physical prime while he is a wiser but older combatant. He probably was just trying to pace himself and carry Obi Wan and not leave his apprentice behind or vulnerable
The Bible is truth. Please take your salvation seriously. Read at least three books of Bible, Genesis Mathew and one you chose yourself. It’s important,
I can remember another Sith who took issue with the lack of honor in Sith philosophy, just as Maul appears to be taking issue with Sidious' advice.
In SWTOR, The Hero of Tython encounters a sith pureblood on Tatooine, who ends up turning to the light. He claimed that his kin had lost all sense of honor, but that the Jedi Knight proved the honor of his order
It just feels like someone is retconning maul's thoughts based on the fight in the movie.
I always liked qui gon's moves because they always feel like real sword fighting as opposed to flashy dancing. I think that could be because Liam neeson is actually a tough guy in real life so he can add a certain authenticity to the movements.
In a fight to the death, anyone who can resorts to whatever is necessary for a win simply knowing that the stakes are higher. plus with Maul its also an attribute of his race.
0:10 to 0:55 I agree, and it’s a great shame that Maul killed Qui-Gon Jinn, as he was one of the only Jedi of his time that was (at least boarder line) a Grey Jedi. The Grey Jedi have the best knowledge and wield of the Force, in my opinion. They are well balanced in most ways between the light and dark.
I understand that when you’re life depends on it you must do what’s necessary to live, but still. If Qui-Gon survived and was able to train Anakin (as explained in another video), Anakin would’ve been so much more than what we got in timeline we know. 5:51 Anakin wouldn’t have likely turned to the dark side either if he had Qui-Gon as his teacher. But the Force works in mysterious ways.
If Maul hadn't used the cheap shot to the chin, Qui Gonn wouldn't have single handedly killed Maul but it would allow just enough time for Obi Wan to rejoin the fight an aid his tiring master. Together, they defintely would have managed to either strike Maul down or force him to attempt an escape.
I never thought that the CGI clone wars maul was done justice. As good as the series is Maul was always a sore spot for me because he was supposed to far more reserved in my opinion. Instead they turned him into a cartoon villain. He had a lot more depth and complexity and they kind of just threw it away.
My thoughts are very practical and non-dogmatic. There’s no such thing as a fair fight, and there are no winners; in the end it’s only survivors that did what they must to cease the violence
How is a pummel blow a "shameful trick?" The lightsaber is a weapon. That means _all of it_ is a weapon. Pommel strikes and use of the guard are perfectly acceptable in longsword duels. In fights with polearms, the whole thing is on the table to be used. Ones body, weapons/armor, and the environment are all on the table in a fight.
At worst it's inelegant, and if either the Jedi or the Sith see shame because of this, it speaks only to their cultural decadence. There is no "trick" here. Just someone seeing an opening and taking it.
Do a video on the Houks species
I believe the most serious error of Qui Gon Jin was to allow himself to separate from his padawan. If the battle was 2 against one it would be easier. He should not go after Darth Maul at the very end! Especially when they got separated by this energy field, Qui Gon Jin should go back and rejoin with Obiwan Kenobi. Then the odds would be definitely with them. One more fact that should consider Qui Gon Jin was that his oponent had a double light saber and this gives him the upper hand in the duel.
This both miscalculations do not show an experienced Master of light saber! An experienced swordman is not going to put on a fight with someone who yields a superior weapon! If You have a sword You never put up with someone who yields two swords, a lance or anything that can block or deliver blows and thrusts easier than You!
Man, I really want to see more of qui-gon in New shows and stuff.
Its pretty cool that liam neeson uses basically the same form of swordsman combat in "kingdom of heaven" as well
Hotaru or otaru 🤷♂️ lightsaber style which was described as attacking high like the hawk, he describes this to orlando bloom when he is training him to defend with his sword..
Dunno just thought that was a pretty neat coincidence lol
Maul is an interesting character for sure. He seems to possess some sort of a personal code of honor (he did seem to respect at least some of his opponents such as Qui Gon and Pre Viszla, the latter which he beat fair and square to get the Darksaber and the right to rule Mandalore). Dooku and Vader also had their own codes of honor but they also were Jedi originally while Maul had abhorred the Light his entire life. Darth Sidious was never a Jedi and would absolutely have resorted to going below the belt if it meant securing victory.
Also somewhat unusually for a Sith he truly enjoyed the thrill of combat and did not seem to have a fear of dying in battle (he may have even accepted it as his destiny). He took immense pride in his lightsaber skills and chiefly used the Force to augment his already impressive physical capabilities. I don’t think Sith alchemy interested him much, nor did he care for the whole hiding and plotting thing the Sith did for over a thousand years. He viewed himself as the instrument to bring about the Jedi’s doom. He was a deadly agent of the Dark Side for sure, but he was also impatient and overestimated his own skill as much as he underestimated Obi-Wan’s. They had come to blows several times in their 30 year rivalry, but finally came to an understanding when Kenobi defeated Maul for the last time on Tatooine. No longer hell-bent on revenge, Maul’s dying words had placed his faith in Luke (and by proxy, Anakin) defeating a much greater evil than himself and bringing balance back to the Force.
"NO MERCY!!!"

Of all the ways Maul could've dispatched Gui-Gon, knocking him in the chin was a pretty cheap shot; but, when your only objective is to eliminate your opponent, anything goes.
Qui gon. Darth maul and obi wan such badass characters. Love my star wars!
3:01 maul didn’t even really kick kenobi lol
It’s funny cause I’m life a fight like that is a fight and you should openly use every maneuver you can but it also is interesting that maul knew he was in the wrong. I think that reflects the nature of his character rather well. And he is more honorable than most sith are shown to be.
This was the key duel the only duel that really mattered in the whole series yes you have obi wan vs anakin but then you think if qui gon killed maul here would that have happened this is what i mean by this is the only duel that mattered since he was the father figure for the young ani and the person who ani could trust this duel sealed the fate of the world so to speak and thats why i think this duel is the only duel that mattered yes if people believed fives then order 66 would not happen but if qui gon was able to snuff out sidious before the clone wars order 66 would not happen since clones were just about getting built at this stage. Qui gons unique affinity with the force led him to see more than the council did so thats why i feel if it wasnt anakin qui gon would be the chosen one you might still have the sidious fight but it would be greatly different the jedi wont be fighting to survive they would be fighting to take down the sith and thats why this duel here is the only duel that mattered
I like that explanation allot, the sith are the underdogs of sorts and its very stih like to have the force against you and still bend it to your will as Maul does
Without Qui Gons death the series as a whole would take a much different route Anakin would be trained by Qui Gon and would not turn to the dark side and would be open with Qui Gon about his feelings for Padme
Maul tried to do it again against Kenobi in Rebels.
Honour is a weakness that the Sith don't put up with. Maul was incredibly arrogant expecially at this point, the only thing he would regret would be not utterly outclassing the jedi.
Maul hated the jedi, he had no respect for them at all and wanted to kill a jedi master as a personal flex more than anything.
i think it was absolutely fair. its a battle to the death.... a punch to the face is to be expected... and if anything it was qui gon who was unfair since he does this battle 2 v 1... as a person who plays battle games i can tell you first hand a 2 v 1 is very hard if not impossible. you have to be way faster and smarter about your approach, your openings will be little to none if they have good teamwork like a jedi and his padawan would, and you have to be able to predict and maneuver around 2 bodies (in this case they have swords that are easily the most deadly weapons in almost all of fiction as it cuts through anything and everything with ease). maul does have 2 blades but they are connected and he is only 1 body, qui and his padawan had single blades but they could attack from many different directions at the same time. they could have used the force to hold his blade or even simply turn it off for just a split second and it would be long enough for qui gon or his padawan to cut and kill him. he would have no defense against that at all as he wouldnt expect it since he was always forgetting about the padawan and was more focused on qui gon. in fact during the death scene he absolutely could have done that and bought qui gon long enough to recover from that punch to the face... why he didnt i have no clue
Qui Gon needs to be in Battlefront 2
that ship sailed YEARS ago, my friend.
I believe Qui Gon Jinn was powerful as a Jedi, as many will point out he had a full understanding of the force and that made him someone to be reckoned with. If I ever got the chance to speak 1 on 1 with George Lucas I would love the chance to see what he believes could've happened with the character in other scenarios.
NNNNNNOOOOOOO
Maul is really great at fooling the enemy about his true power which leads to them losing their guard probably why he's ashamed of such a tactic
Then why did he try the same move on Obi when Obi-wan killed him on Tatooine?
If hitting someone with the hilt is not a "cheap trick". Obviusly, the writers just added this because they could.
It was a duel and Maul created an opening inn a fair 1 v 1. It's not like he had soliders comming in helping him. Just dumb how hitting with the hilt is "cheap", considering it's litraly part off his weapon. It would be the same if I hit someone with barrel of my gun, it's not cheap, it's strategy.
the first time they fought: Qui-gon could barely hold a candle to Maul.
second time Qui-gon is dominating, and lost to a dirty trick.

He thinks it's a 'cheap trick' and is ashamed of it, but tries it again aginst Obi wan in Rebels. An oponant he had fought several times without beating, even when it was him and Savage against Obi Wan he could not win. Maul must have had some respect for Obi Wan as a duelist. It would seem he isn't that ashamed of it after all.
Saving Qui gon would have changed a surprising amount of the story.
It's weird to think Maul felt this way considering he tried to use the exact same maneuver against Obi-Wan in Rebels.
If this battle was a sport, id say yes. But this is a street fight. Although i can understand that maybe darth maul was disappointed that he wasnt able to make a fool out of qui gon jinn first before landing the kill blow. Perhaps mauls true desire was too spare qui gon jinns life for a future duel but was unable too because he didnt want to report a mission failure to sidious. But i wouodnt declare this a “dishonorable trick” but rather qui gon over extended himself.
Then theres… obi wan… lol… the plot armor
But never the less, maul was in control of that fight from start to finish. Problem was he didnt win the fight the way he wanted to win it.
Obi wan caught on to it though and countered with a spin kick and broke his light sabre in half because he was probably going to try that move again.
Which means… it didn’t bother maul that much
Same thing with anakin. Obi wan remembered his finisher against dooku and countered it
Obi wan wasnt the best duelist but you gotta give him props for paying attention
All this being said … my final verdict on this fight is that darth maul was disappointed he wasnt able to humiliate qui gon in single combat. But hes not ashamed of his light saber hilt uppercut
My opinion
Maul wanted to win through raw skill without using tricks. It's why he hated using the force to kill his enemies.
It seems a bit silly that this should be considered "cheap". It wasn't a trick. He used his weapon and skill to overcome an opponent. This strikes me more as some mild retconning to make Qui-gon look better.
Obi-Wan has the most lightsaber dueling accomplishments of all. Maul, Grevious, pinnacle Anakin and (Vader, for their first fight), anyone else? and honestly who else has a better record than that?
When it is life or death there is no such thing as a fair fight.
In other words: Fanboys thought Vaapad was so awesome they had to retcon it into something the Sith had known about for years under a different name, just so they could try to make Maul and the Sith cooler.
I agree with Sharkquisha. All is fair in battle there are no rules. Think of real life, if you are fighting to the death, you would do whatever it takes to win.
What's the source of Maul's dialogue?
Always said it but maul really is underestimated
Maul got choppy chopped soon after, so how did he think all this?
Wait so maul regrets stabbing qui gon jin that's unheard of well to me it is
More that Maul had to basically punch him in the face to get that opening vs just completly overpowering and daminating his opponent. Personally if I were a Sith I'd be using that tactic every chance I got. >_>
Jinn was a great and powerful Jedi.
Honestly if Qui-Gon Jinn used form 5 instead he probably would've been unbeatable in combat
It’s so stupid how they brought maul back
well, if your not fighting dirty then your not fighting at your full skill
I always new that it was a fairly fair fight lol, and i remember being shocked when the jeti died. however i did not know that maul thought badly on this fight. i can understand why he did

Had he not, Qui Gon and Obi would have beat him. It was what he had to do.
Not gonna lie I think Qui Gon could have won, when he meditated mid-battle. But he foresaw how differently events would play out in the galaxy if he had beaten Maul, and thus it needed to happen.
Qui Gon was deeply rooted in prophecy, so if he had to die as a means to bring balance to the force, even in a distant way, he would do it.
If it's a fight to the death? Is there really anything off limits or considered a cheap shot? I fought a guy who was a foot taller than me and 100lbs heavier. Before than I never tried to fight dirty but I made the choice to hammer fist his entire Nutscack area with everything I had while we were tangled up... And I'd do it again because for some reason he didn't want to fight anymore lol.
What do we consider a old jedi? I don't think qui gon jin was that old more like a Tom Brady older in shape wise and experienced
Age and the aggression of his lightsaber form were the factors of his loss and death. It was not in any way a lack of skill with the blade.
Darth Maul won because he used his mind over his brawn. He used Qui-Gon aggressive style against him.
He fought a 2V1, it was already unfair to begin with. One was a student, yes, but the other is well known as one of the best Jedi and a great duelist while the student grows to be a professional strategist and troll.
And if you think Maul wouldn't fight honorably... Watch Maul vs Pre Vizsla and pay attention at how Viz fought to every advantage but Maul fought fairly. He fought a 1V1 with sabers, dodged and refused to fight ranged, didn't use the force, when Viz took away his Saber he did the same, then beat him in hand to hand combat and only grabbed his Saber when he knew the fight was over

I'm failing to see how hitting him in the chin is seen as a dirty move. If you can pull that off, doesn't that make you more skilled? Am I missing something..?
