- CAN YOU REALLY 'FREEZE-TO-REVIVE' DODGY E-BIKE BATTERIES?
This week I take a dodgy old battery I bought cheaply on eBay and freeze it to see if I can restore it to its former glory.

Interesting video, been looking at my battery for my camera that will not charge maybe this will help!
Hi. It’s Brendan. Brill video and what lovely scenery. I’m Glad the freeze worked well for you. I might give my dud battery another go just in case. It’s easy enough to to do isn’t it. Hopefully now that you’ve made this video more people will try it. Gtech Ebikes are great to begin with and this “tired” battery hack just makes them even better for longer term use.
Thanks Brendan! Fingers crossed for your battery.
did it work? I have a battery with voltage sag and I am trying it now.
nice science project i wonder would this work for a e battery that for some strange reason will not charge?? could well be worth a try
Hi Steve I bought a bike yesterday the Gtech ascent my batteries performance is intermittent always but but I easily cruise at 16 mph with not hardly any effort on the pedals so I'm well happy it's my first e-bike on Echo I can get 32 miles on Max performance probably 14 thank you once again you go for the dirt and rain so we don't have to thank you☺
hi, maybe you know how to reset the bms? old battery version without display :)
Hi Steve, another great Gtech video,.Just one question, when you take the battery out of the freezer, how long did you leave it before putting it on to charge? (Did it have to reach normal temperature first?) Thank you!! Geo 😀
Thanks George.
I think it was 24 hours at room temp.
Giving this a try, My battery just decided it hardly wants to output power, gonna see if this buys me another couple weeks while I wait for a replacement
hi, maybe you know how to reset the bms? old battery version without display
Did you recharge that battery before or after you froze it?
Hi Steve just stumbled on your videos yesterday, really enjoy them.Had my gtech sport nearly a year and love it (just wish i could go further without £300 for a spare battery)after a month i conked out when still at 7% which was enough to get home,i repeated the scenario a week later and same thing, and these bikes are really hard to peddle when battery flat which is understandable ,i want to try the freeze method on the battery but im scared stiff i will ruin it and wont have any bike to ride,is there any instances you ve heard of where the battery has been ruined completelly after freezing 24 hours.
regards
Glen jarvis
Hi Glen!
If you’re on FB, join the owners group as lots of great knowledge in there.
Cheers!
Steve
I'm a member of the FB group that Steve mentioned and I haven't seen or heard of any adverse effects of a freeze AS LONG AS YOU KEEP IT BAGGED AND DRY during the freeze.
hi mate - do you know of any way to boost the speed of the gtech ebike ?
Hi!
Not easily.
NIce video, Steve. It might be worthwhile doing a dry freeze every year or so to "recondition" our batteries. Yours seemed to work more predictably after its freeze. It would be interesting to see how long the improvement lasts. We certainly shouldn't extrapolate your single experience too far but it's certainly worth a try if even some batteries improve as much as yours. Looks like your cheap purchase turned into a bargain. Nice one, Steve, and another enjoyable video!
You’re right, it’s an old battery and I don’t know how it was looked after so it’s still an ‘unknown’.
I think as long as it’s the cells that are tired and not the BMS that’s faulty, there’s a high chance of it working.
@SteveJulien were the results long lasting?
So freezing it charged it, or did you miss out charging it in the video?
thanks steve ,i didnt realise freezing l/i was a thing :o
Me neither really until I read a few articles. Important to really seal the battery before freezing though!
@@SteveJulien cheers pal :)
Discovered your channel from the Peloton budge video (thanks for the advice btw, think I’m going to go for the JLL bike).
Funnily enough I’m originally from Peterborough and my Great Grandad lived in Stamford. I have good memories of a school trip to Grafham water!
a good mud guard help !
You forgot to say if you charged the battery before putting it in the freezer you didn't put it in the freezer flat did you
I have my 67 volt battery pack in the freezer so I will report on results this coming week. I see nobody came back with the results and the channel owner dis not comment on any of them. So I am worried about the outcome 😢
What happened?
Too much talking
