A great takeaway: Mario Andretti's comment about commitment.
So many new photographers will ask 'what does it take'...and you hear answers like 'great equipment, good education, lots of practice" and, yada, yadda..
But it all starts with commitment. If you're not out there investing time in making images that matter, if you're not learning from your failures, if you're not making your camera an extension of your arm (yes, actually reading the manual), then you're really not committed to improvement and mastery. You might as well admit that your smart phone is about as far as you want to go.
Which can actually be a good thing. As a camera club member reminds me: photography is one hobby where people are more than pleased to spend thousands of dollars to find out what they don't need. To find out how committed you really are, tally the number of days your equipment is sitting in a bag or drawer.
