Mckean’s cover art alone might make this my best purchase of the year. :) It’s not only beautiful but establishes Arkham Asylum as it’s own character. The changes fits the story much more IMO. The restored art gives a stronger sense of surrealism.

Beautiful, exquisite edition with a price to match. I'm a long time Dave Mckean fan and this is going to my wishlist for this year (hopefully...).
Nice to see a more colour precise print, as it should be....

McKean's new cover paintings are utterly gorgeous! The back cover seems inspired by the designs of the Crowley/Harris tarot deck.

I recently re-read it and enjoyed it as much as I did 30 years ago. My original copy I gave away many years ago, since I had another one still wrapped in plastic. So after 30 years, I tore the plastic and read it. The way I imagined a film version of Batman was affected by this, even till this day. It's a stark work.
Even though it sold thousands of copies, I rarely encounter anyone who has enjoyed it as much as I have, or as I think they should! I was mesmerized by the story when I read it at the time (just like I was by Elektra Assassin, another book that sold well, but didn't garner much admiration ).

Excellent review as you of a great, inspiring work that I bought thirty years ago.

I just bought the new print version of this book under the DC Black Label line plus it’s using the slipcase art of the absolute edition as the front and back cover. I loved everything about this book and so far I haven’t seen anyone review this version and to see what is the difference between the 2. Love you content and a recent subscriber. Found you thanks to your multidipping collection of the Killing Joke which I also got the new print version.

Pretty thin. You're so right. They should've tried a bit harder to include even more background info. That said, I still need it! :)

As always, cool video my friend. By the way, I can see the new design mimics the Crowley tarot (appearing originally inside the book), the cover being a trump, the spine the bunch of cards (I guess there is a word for this in english but I don't know it) and so on...

that's interesting... and maybe you're right about the spine

Just got this for 20€, one of my best purchases. Already had the 15th anniversary trade but this is infinitely better imo

I prefer thinner absolutes anyway. Absolutes should not have their worth determined by the length of the story. In my opinion, they are a celebration of the art itself and the craft of making comics. I can't think of 3 Batman stories that deserve this format more than year one, the killing joke or Arkham asylum...

Love this story, getting this at the start of the year.
I have the 1st edition HC, 1st edition TPB, 15th Anniversary TPB, 25th Anniversary HC, and a French HC from 1988
It reminds me of the recolour by Bolland on the Killing Joke Deluxe Edition HC, more to what he wanted.
Love your collection in the background, do you have a video highlighting it by chance?

My very first video showcased my collection some years ago. But it was not very good, actually no video at all, more a slideshow with comment (panellogy 000).
But I'll do some new collection video(s) sometimes in the future for sure... btw if you're interested in the particular books in the background: these are some of my Euro comics which I've showcased in some "top ten lists" recently.

I’m actually debating whether to grab Batman The Man who laughs, Batman Year One, or Batman Arkham Asylum. A book store in my area actually sells the 25th anniversary of the AA comic as well the year one while I have to grab the man who laughs on Amazon. This year the Three Joker went out which is why I feel like sticking to some major Joker stories but then again I would like to know more about Batman or the world around him. Any advice?

I would wait until a story comes out as an absolute edition... because of that I gave up on reading the "most recent" batman after the night of the owls. ... and from the titles you mentioned "Batman Year One" is probably the title most often mentioned as ones favorite (mine would be maybe a tie between BYO, AA and TLH... just right now... my opinions change like the weather)

@@earlgrey862 thanks a ton for the reply Grey. Really appreciate it. I’ll see what I can grab from any of them.

Could have added more grantmorrison batman to make thickbook

    • @earlgrey862
      @earlgrey862  4 года назад

maybe... but I'm rather glad they haven't, because AA is a standalone story in very many ways
