  • In this video you will learn the basics of digital pathology and digital microscopic diagnostics.
Digital pathology is a combination of two technologies - light microscopy and digital patholography.
The images can be captured statically or dynamically.
Static images are non-zoomable snapshots taken with a microscope camera or even with your phone through the microscope objective.
Dynamic images are created with the help of whole slide scanners and are called whole slide images.
The fact that the microscopic image is captured digitally gives the possibility to use computer algorithms and analyze those images.
The methods used for microscopic image analysis can be based on thresholding - this is how classical computer vision methods are applied in tissue image analysis. Or artificial intelligence including deep learning methods can be leveraged for this.
The whole slide scanners can scan microscopic slides very fast and give us the zoomable, digital microscope experience, however, static images carry a lot of diagnostic value as well.
Static images can be used for telepathology and telecytology directly from the practice with the use of your phone. Static digital pathology gives everyone access to this discipline even on a budget. In this way, you can start doing digital pathology right now.
