QUESTION! >8O
Why do cameras struggle with colour when light is dimmer (for example, making skin look weird purple-bluish)?
craig is the best mental floss person. love him
Craig, we need a list of all your nicknames in high school because there is no other way to keep track of them all. Thank you.
I get motion sick in literally every form of transport. For some reason though, the anti nausea medication didn't work one bit so I was given sleeping medication instead whenever we travelled. Now I don't even need the sleeping tablets anymore because I am conditioned to fall asleep whenever I travel for more than an hour. Also... Motion sickness sucks! The disapproving looks from other passengers in planes is humiliating!!!
Hey Mental Floss! Wax is usually found in the outer ear, not the inner ear... The inner ear is filled with fluid (endolymph & perilymph)
I get car sick easily... but opening a window and getting fresh air helps a lot... Staying in the stale air of the car or with the AC of the car, just makes me even more sick. If I don't get fresh air from an open window, I'm probably going to regurgitate sooner or later (though I can somewhat hold it unlike when I was a kid, but I just feel sick for hours after the ride)
Does lotion truly hydrate your skin? And if so, how?
bump
+Diana Mack While there is water in lotions, most of the silky feel comes from the oil that is the lubricant in the lotion. The tiny amount of water evaporates quickly, so it does not "hydrate" the outer layer of the epidermis. What lotion (or cream) does is to spread oil over your skin, sealing in the water that would normally evaporate through your pores. Since the oils actually are water soluble, the effect is definitely temporary. Hydration comes from within, so drink your water and you won't need skin lotions..other than for the smell.
+Dodi Tov thank you :)
You were very funny on this one Craig. Very appropriate timing for me since I just got very sick on a plane ride.
I get pretty easily carsick, especially sitting in the back of a car, but I've never in my life been seasick. I always adapt to being on a boat really quickly. Why is that?
Maybe because you can move your legs and plant yourself in a way your brain recognizes as an adjustment to movement?
+RainAngel111 Probably because you're a mermaid and belong near the sea.
David Livermore my real name is Marina. I'm not fucking kidding. Oh mermaid family, when will you come back to claim me?
Funny, I've got the exact opposite. I don't ever get carsick or airsick, but I get terribly seasick basically the moment I step onto any kind of ship. Cross-Channel ferries are a particular antifavourite (is that a word?) of mine...
Robert Faber that's funny.
I think that the motion on a boat is just so different.
In a car and a plane, most of the time your ride is pretty smooth. Most of what makes me sick is the air pressure and not being able to see outside.
On a boat though, it's the swaying motion that gets you.
i have a question that has been bugging me. why do we get those random shoots of pains in our bodies.
This was pretty interesting and nice to know! Things that move from side to side really fast, tend to make me dizzy. Such as if my hands are shaky and I'm typing on my phone one handed. Then I just stop for a while. Lack of sleep too I think can also cause dizziness.
Do an episode about hearing/auditory nerve and its connection to tinnitus. What can be done to cure/treat it, in some kind of way?
you just keep getting better. hooray
MY NICKNAME IN HIGHSCHOOL GETS ME EVERY TIME
I'm still confused as to what motion sickness medication does to prevent motion sickness.
+nefercitta Making you sleepy is what I thought the medicine did too, but I'm not sure that closing your eyes helps. I always felt worse if I closed my eyes, unless I'd taken medication. Just my experiance, I've suffered from motion sickness for as long as I can remember.
+nefercitta Ehh, not exactly, because dramamine(motion sickness medicine) is only about half diphenhydramine, which makes you sleepy, but the other half is 8-Chlorotheophylline, which is a stimulant, like caffeine. So it can actually cause hyperactivity in some people.
+nefercitta actually, I get more sick in a car/plane when I fall asleep. I've heard that motion sickness meds do something to the liquid in your inner ear, which dampens the ability to perceive the motion.
kimmycheyenne
I think there are many varying causes depending on the individual, at least 3 were addressed in the video.
Ahh car sickness, the reason I have literally trained myself to immediately feel sleepy when in a car
I never used to get motion sickness unless I was reading in the car. A couple years ago I got vertigo (which went away after two-ish weeks), and now being in a car (even sometimes while I'm driving the car) I get sick, usually within a minute or two. I also can't watch or play first person video games for more than five to ten minutes without the same feeling.
Nice shirt Craig! I have the same one from H&M! hehe
Hi Craig, I was curious about what created the space, which created the gases, that created the sun?
Thanks.
Why don't drivers and pilots get motion sick? Brain interpreting motions as body movement in relation to the motion? And why does Benedryl work so well for motion sickness?
Why aren't the videos longer? Think that's a question were all wondering.
Hi!! can u do one on "why do songs get stuck in our heads?" Thank you :)
What about things such as Meniere's disease (also motion sickness related, I believe)?
While I've always thought the motion-sensing discrepancy making the body think it's hallucinating from poison make sense, that always raised the question to me of why don't we ALL get it then?
Love the shirt - very Bobby Brady - or maybe Peter.
"Experts, as usual, don't know for sure what causes motion sickness" lololol
What about motion sickness from roller coasters?
Anything is OK for me except trying to read in a moving car.
I don't know about other people but, trains. Trains cause motion sickness.
Who is film director Alan Smithee?
What does it mean when you shake internally?
What causes vertigo whenever I see a picture looking over an edge, watch a movie with people climbing in high places (Cliffhanger) or playing a video game and my character gets up high walking around (not flying a plane as it doesn't happen there). My screen does not fill my field of vision so it isn't an Imax effect.
i suffed motion sickness on a small boat but when i was swimming in the sea water i felt fine all had gone i could not understand it.
Always worse in the back seat or when the vehicle vibrates or shakes.
My daughter suffered from it - I found that eating raw cabbage seemed to help. Eating crackers (starch), protein or other varieties of produce didn't do it for her, but travel munchies of raw cabbage did...
When I was a child my father bought a new Ford that always made me queasy when I rode in the back seat - but since the smell of the solvents used in making it were so strong, I always figured it was the smell that made me sick.
Interesting. I get sick on planes and in cars, but not boats.
Alex Creed Seasick is an experience I've had... Worse below decks.
I can recommend raw cabbage....
I want the Mr. Yuck poster in the background!!
What is the cause of immunity to motion sickness ?
How do you bind a book?
Why do we get sick from being outside in the cold?
That's interesting, I had always heard that it was likely the body's attempt to remove a poison, but the others make sense too.
I tend to get it in cars if I'm reading (body detecting motion, eyes not) which is fairly common. But I also get it in a lot of video games too if the frame rate is real low, if I'm 1st person on a short character (Gnomes in EQ for example give it to me when running through their home city), or certain FPS games with a lot of rifle motion when moving (Battlefield tends to cause it sometimes while CoD doesn't).
I have a question: What color is a mirror?
Why are pencils usually yellow / yellow-orange?
I don't get nauseous from Motion Sickness, i get headaches. Is that normal?
Would you die faster if your right arm got chopped off, as opposed to losing your left arm? Just because of the way blood flows around your body I feel it would make a difference.
So close your eyes might help with motion sickness?
What causes people to go unconcious after they are struck in the head?
So is it nausea or nausea?

Why do we get ingrown hairs?
question Craig what is life
Why do humans dance around when they have to pee, but aren't able to? Does it actually help people keep from peeing? And do any other animals do this?
Why are taxi cabs yellow?

+Zeldas Champion So you'd ask about it. They were thinking of you.
They were think of you?
Zeldas Champion woops
Why do we say bless you after someone sneezes?
I've always gotten motion sickness from watching 3D movies. I didn't ever used to get car sick; but, recently I was messing with my Kindle in the back seat of a car and just felt so miserable. It was like the sickness I get when watcing 3D movies X5. Maybe it comes with age?
I hate having motion sickness. I also get morning sickness when I'm pregnant, so riding in a vehicle while pregnant sucks!!
Why does snow form ia crystal shapes? (Aka why are snowflakes shaded like they are, but not like sleet)
+Nathan Becker
It probably relates to the crystal lattice patterns that water molecules accumulate into owing to their bent shape. (answering in case you didn't already know, not that it's much help, being so vague)
Is it motion?
cerumen isn't found in the inner ear
I really, really want a cure for motion sickness. It's the bane of my life. I love going places, I *hate* having trips ruined by motion sickness. I even get it when I drive the car myself. Pendolino trains are a nightmare. Don't get me started on planes, boats and buses. 5 minutes of motion sickness and it takes me about 10 hours to recover.
Why are blue, black, and red the predominant colours of pen ink?
Why do our stomachs"growl" when we're hungry?
Wax is found in the external ear...
Remember. Nausea... or nausea.
so technically I have none of these three, but I get lost motion sickness when I am reading in a car nowhere else but yet playing a game on a tablet or phone does not affect me at all. and just staring at say the floor ( stationary) is perfectly fine. am I just messed up then?
+Matt It could have something do with the fact that you're performing a specific, focus-intensive task while out of the corner of your eye things are moving (try reading while walking, a similar uneasiness will occur after a while), combined with the slight vibrations caused by the vehicle could both lead to sickness.
I have terrible car sickness, I've leaned to control vomiting now but I used to vomit almost every car ride, even very short ones. We always kept a stock of plastic bags in the car. Anywho, the main thing that helps me is looking outside while moving, if I am looking inside the vehicle while moving (i.e. Dashboard, phone, book, etc) I get the feeling bad but not so bad when looking outside. It's definitely not a fun problem to have, threw up on my friends new Nintendo Gameboy back in the day cause we were in the backseat and I couldn't help but watch him play it.
why is sound louder at night
What really was your nickname in highschool?
IS the tongue REALLY the strongest muscle and if so HOW?!?
Why do some countries pronounce the letter z as "zed"?
Big question:
Where does "Grim Reaper" come from?
I get motion sickness from playing certain games like Portal 2. The point of view and the way the character walks causes me to get queasy. Also from reading in a car.
Why do people stick out their tongue to concentrate?
Why don't tattoos disappear when skin cells are replaced?
Binge
My mom would tell me to look out the window when I got car sick. IT ALL MAKES SENSE, NOW.
the answer is in the name
Motion sickness has to do with not being in control
Why do cats hate water?
0:37 OMG a SAAB :)
I get horrible HORRIBLE motion sickness in planes and cars, I vomit my guts out if I don't wear my motion sickness on long drives, or sometimes even on short drives. I should really wear them everywhere tbh.
