Good vid Steve, as always. .👍👍 Yes, that mount is a bit of a 'coffee grinder'...its 'slew symphony' reminds me of the Meade mounts from the 1990s....and your battery pack is the right shade of blue as well !😉.😁 lol Of course, per your review vids, the Star Adventurer GTI GoTo mount is an excellent performer within its weight limits, so I'm sure that we'll see a ton of them in use at dark sky campgrounds in the coming years. However, I wonder if hearing protection should be recommended in those situations?🙉 lol 😉😁
Hahahaha hearing protection 🤣🤣🤣 That little battery pack is soooo good 😌 The colour is ok I guess 😉 I do think you’ll see lots of these at star parties while the big rigs are left at home in more permanent setups. If they could come up with an auto home sensor in a future version then wow. Good video! Have you had any problems powering the Star Adventurer GTI with the ASIAIR? Usually it common to power the mount apart from the ASIAIR, but the GTI may be the exception if it’s power draw is low.
I just ordered my GTi, it finally was in stock at High Point Scientific. I should probably order my ASIAir Pro now. Thanks for the tutorial. You made it look easy. Can't wait to get things up and running! Thanks again.

Amazing how RUclips serves up videos in "the nick of time." My Star Adventurer GTI and ASI Air will arrive this week. And I'm a new subscriber. I probably have a lot to learn as I head into this new hobby. Cheers!
Great video, exact same setup I have. Have you had any issues with the go to/slewing? I was out 2 nights ago with it and my mount kept spewing the opposite direction it was meant to go and eventually always ended up pointing down to the ground.
Mr. Morris. More and more GTI's are landing in the hands of consumers (me). Want to help a bunch of us? Maybe a video on the exact cable you are using to directly connect the GTI and the ASIAIR Plus. Would be really nice to avoid the hand controller altogether. An Amazon link in the U.S. (I know you are far far from the U.S.) would be super helpful.
@medicineman4040 You probably found out by now, but FWIW the cable that Steven used appears to be the USB one that comes with the SA GTI. It has a USB-A connector that goes into one of the USB 2.0 (for instance) ports in the AA+ into the USB port of the GTI (top left of the GTI panel). Cheers.
Hello Steven! Great video, thx for sharing. Just bought one, it is in transit. The EQ Mode option in the drop down menu is the best moutn connection to use? I've seen that there are other options for the Sky-Watcher mounts.
It does make for a great portable set up when imaging from a remote location, I used to take my gear to a darksite to image, which was an NEQ6 mount, 250PX Newtonian or the ED80 depending on the target, modified DSLR, laptop & Leisure battery to power everything. Usually there would be a cable that failed or I'd forget something which would make the evening a lot more frustrating. Technology has come on in leaps & bounds over the past few years so I'll probably make up a more portable system at some point.
Yes I remember those days of lugging so much gear around including a table and seat, things have changed so much in the past 5 years and is only getting better the more people are starting to get into astro.
Steven, thank you for a very helpful, hands-on video. Just got my SA GTI and AsiAir+ and am trying to connect everything. Question, if I may: you connected the AA+ to the GTI's USB port. I've seen people using instead the GTI's Hand Cntrl port w/ a cable w/ an RJ45 connector at the end. Is that immaterial for operating the mount w/ the AA+? Thank you!
Awesome Steve...thank you! Do you have any videos on Polar Aligning in the Southern Hemisphere using the GTi & AsiAir Plus (I am in Sydney & thinking of getting such a setup to use with Mirror-less cameras & conventional Nikon lenses up to 200mm) Cheers
It looks very simple and I think it will be something I will definitely eventually get and utilise. I bought an SW SA GTI mount just last week and I'm reading a lot that the star watcher app needs to be constantly on? Is that your understanding? At the moment I'm just using my Fujifilm Xt3 camera on the mount and therefore I don't think there is any way I can get an AsiAir to use the camera for plate solving, so I tend to think I should stick with the SW app. I'd be keen to know what you think I should do.
No star alignment was done after polar alignment. If using the ASIAir system when you slew to an object the system will plate solve that part of the Sky and make necessary adjustments if the object isn’t central so a star alignment isn’t needed.
Thanks for the video. I'm still waiting for my ASIAIR Plus but in researching I found that you can also use a RJ45/USB cord with the ASIAIR Plus. Connect ASIAIR (USB) to "Hand Control" port (SA GTI) This will allow operating the SA GTI go to function using the sky map screen in AISAIR. Not sure if this is ta redundancy using USB to USB shown.
It was a year ago so I'm not sure what the exact link was but you can find several different makes. Just enter "USB to Ethernet Cable 6 FT, USB 3.0 A Male to RJ45 Male Cord" in AMZ search. Several popped up.
@@rudebuddha4895 Thanks. In the meantime, I also found one on AlliExpress. It would nevertheless appear that the AA+ sky map is useable w/ the USB cable that came with the GTI. Hi and thanks for a nice intro. I am considering buying the GTI and am missing some vital info. - About the ASIAIR to GTI cable, does it need to be an "EQ mod cable" or are you using a standard USB cable? - Also, I have built a complete unit with a DSLR camera, a ZWO ASIAIR Plus and a ZWO ASI120MM guide camera with a 30mm guiding scope. Have you tried controlling the GTI this way or can you perceive any problems? - Finally :) I also connect my Canon EOS via cable to the ASIAIR Plus and would like to run the Polar Alignment via the focus mode in the ASIAIR app, do you see any problems using it like that to polar align? Many thanks in advance from Up Over...
Hi Steve, thanks for review. Shouldn't it be possible to connect the SA GTI to the ASIAir via WiFi? There are even instructions for the SA-AZ-GTI on the ASI homepage. To do this, however, the SA must be operated in station mode. With my SA no settings are possible there. Doesn't that look better on you? Greetings Ralf
How many watts and how long does your power bank last with everything plugged into it? I love how the gti and AIS air plug together as 1 unit. Is it a 3.5mm plug that connects into your power bank? Im thinking about buying both units starting out. Thanks for sharing! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! 👍
The Lithium power bank is a 15Ah which lasts throughout the night not a problem. What I also like about the power supply is that it has a 3.5mm jack like you mentioned. It also has 2 x USB ports and other outputs. If your looking into buying the GTI and AIS Air to start out with it's a very good start in equipment. The GTI mount is a little noisy though, just a heads up and if you can stretch your budget to a Celestron AVX mount or Sky-Watcher equivalent then you are future proofing yourself a little further. The GTI is still a great little portable mount.
Ive looked up the AVX, as good as it looks with better weight handling, Im seeing horrible reviews because of gear backlash. Have you heard the same? Im just trying to weigh out my options. I think the GTI will hold me off for a bit. I do have mirrorless cameras with 135mm, 200mm, and 300mm to work with for now. Im really liking that 400mm Skywatcher 62ED evolux. That would be 600mm equivalent on crop sensor camera right? Im definitely not wanting to spend all that much right now on higher tier gear. Im fancied by hooking up an asi air plus into a GTI and using my tablet to do it sll from. That video you made really caught my eye haha Plus, I love the portability of the GTI. Are you still just as giddy about it now as you were when it came out? I figure I can start with my dslr and lenses, then buy actual telescopes and camera later when Im feeling more confident with my experience and processing. Until then, I think the GTI would hold me off for quite a bit with what I can capture with its limit of 5kg? What do you think? Thanks a lot pal!
@-R-A-I-N-Y- everyone I know including me love the little AVX, but the gti is a cool little mount that you can carry out with one hand tripod and all, plonk it down and get started. When in use with lenses it will be perfectly suited and can handle a scope, just a light weight one. 5kg is max, I pushed it a little further and it still handled things as long as it’s well balanced.
You would need to enter the guide scope details as the main scope for the polar alignment process. Once you’ve polar aligned then connect your camera up. I’m not sure if the Fuji is compatible, if it is great.
This is something that I don't understand. When using the ASIAIR with a guiding scope, do you have to polar align the mount itself, or will the software and guidescope be able to figure out where in the night sky it is pointing?
Thanks for this video but I have other problems regarding my Nikon D810. Tracking works well but when I go to take an image it keep wanting to shoot 5+ frames all the time instead of just one shot. Any clues why this would be happening?
Hi Steven ! Do you know if the Asiair & the star adventurer GTI has issues with daylight savings time? When going to a target it’s going the wrong direction etc and when hitting go home it seems to be off ;(
Not to my knowledge and I haven’t used an Asiair in a while as I’ve been occupied with the triplets and NINA, so the GTI hasn’t been used in a while. Sorry I can’t help you out anymore than that at the moment and nothing is coming to mind when I had used the asiair during the summer months. Hi mate, love the video. I'm in the market in the next few weeks/months for an AAP. Just a couple of quick questions 1. Which cable did you use to power the GTi from the asi and 2. could you just use that cable to run the GTi from a power bank?
I just used the cables that came with the AsiAir to power the mount. You could do that, im also using those same cables to run from the asiair to a power bank so I don’t see why not
Yeah they asiair pro came with extra power cables for each 12volt outlet on the asiair. I was able to use that for my power pack because it had that style connection
Had a crack at it yesterday for the first time (Sony Alpha A7, Skymax 102, Star Adventurer GTi, guide scope and 120mm ZWO guide camera), I didn't have a clear view of Polaris so I pointed my mount north using a compass, the pointed the scope at a visible patch of sky, it did Polar Alignment, smiley face and all. But then after I pressed GoTo, it went in a completely wrong direction. Not sure what is wrong.... Any change you could make a workflow video showing your flow with the Star Adventurer GTi with the ASIAIR ?
So the AsiAir system can help with polar alignment, equipment expansion and compatibility, image planning and camera control as long as the camera is compatible etc. the Skywatcher app is ok for basic functions. I hope this helps.
Steven, have you had any problems with go-to or guiding via ASiair becoming erratic? I've seen reports elsewhere that there are problems with both EQmod cable and direct USB connection, that may even corrupt the mount to the point SynScan can't control it and factory service becomes necessary. Even resetting the mount (requires SynScan hand controller) has been reported not to fix the problem. I have this combination and I'm hesitant to put it into service until I learn more... thanks!
Hi Todd, personally myself I haven’t done any guiding with mine. I’ve only used the asiair to do polar alignment as well as control the camera and goto functions like plate solving etc. It all seems to work perfectly fine but I can’t comment on the guiding aspect. I also haven’t updated my gti since it was released, I haven’t checked if there has been new updates. If things work I don’t do updates because it can introduce new bugs and cause things to malfunction sometimes.
Hi Todd, I’ve actually quite some problems as you described My set up is: AsiAir Plus (tried both the V2.0 and V2.1 with the respective Firmware) Star Adventurer GTI (also used the 3.44 and the latest 3.45 Firmware) Guide Camera Zwo Mini 120mm (connected to the AsiAirplus) Main Camera Sony A7III (connected to the AsiAir Plus) I've tested both the USB-B to USB-A Cable as well as the EQMOD (Cable RJ45 to USB-A) for connecting the AsiAir Plus to the Star Adventure GTI. So, now to the problem, the ASI app starts good, I can connect easily the camera (in V2.1 version, obviously not in the V2.0 version), the Zwo Mini as a guidescope and the mount (EQMod Mount selected). Now: whenever I control with the arrow buttons the mount, it first works maybe once or twice I touch them but then the mount doesnt stop slewing. Same issue when I Goto to a deepspace object it just starts slewing but never stops and I cannot cancel it - the SA GTI does not stop. When I just use the Syncscan App to control the SA GTI it works just fine, no issues at all so it must be the AsiAir Plus.
Does the USB need to be connected for the GTI to use Power from the ASIAir Plus? Just connecting a power cord between the ASIAir Plus and the GTI no power works.
No the GTI power source comes from a power supply. If your powering it through an asiair Plus and you can control the power ports via the app make sure they are on. If not check the GTI to see if the red led is blinking, if so it should be on.
I’ll see what I can do in a future video to assist. You need to make sure your main camera is connected and the focal length of your telescope or lens is entered correctly or it can’t plate solve. Once that’s done you should be able to access to polar alignment feature.
@@StevenMorrisPhotography thanks so much. I had the Star Adventurer 2i pro and am replacing it with the GTI and added the ASIAIR with the 120mm guide scope. I’ve got an A7III and will be using the 200600G for deepspace. Polar alignment with the 2i was a pain and fumbly 🙈
What firmware version do you have running on the GTI? I have the same mount but my ASIAIR plus doest not connect correctly to the GTI via USB. Using the EQMod cable works fine. I know that others have the same issue so I'm wonderung what could be the difference to your working setup. I used the provided USB cable from the GTI and used the same settings as you (EQMod and 9600 baud).
That’s interesting, I haven’t updated the software on it since it was released, I would have to check and see what firmware version I’m running. Have you updated the firmware on the gti?
hello how are you, I have the same device with the new asiair mini, but I have the problem that with the cursor that appears in asiair mini, I can only move the arrows from right to left, the arrows up and down, they do nothing, I have the problem that the telescope is not able to go to correctly, I have tried to change the baud rate, but it is still the same, I configure the mount the same as you do, eq mod mount, I don't know if you can help me , thank you so much
I’d say so, if your using the tablet just to operate the asiair then you’ll be fine because the files don’t save to the tablet, they save to a SD card or internal hard drive space on the ASIAir to transfer to your computer ready for processing later. If your using a dslr then you can save it to the memory card.
Has anyone been able to perform a Meridian flip with this gear? I followed all steps in the video, and also the instructions on the Asiair (disable flipping settings on the synscan app) and nothing seems to work. Thank you!
@@strykker666 sorry, I missed your comment. I managed somehow to make it work. Not sure what did the trick though, but here's what I did: I updated the mount firmware and the ASIAIR app version. I turned off the flipping settings on the synscan app. I set up the meridian flip settings to 5 minutes each (stop guiding 5 minutes before MF and start capturing 5 minutes after MF).
@@StevenMorrisPhotography thank you for the reply!
Hi Todd, I’ve actually quite some problems as you described
My set up is:
AsiAir Plus (tried both the V2.0 and V2.1 with the respective Firmware)
Star Adventurer GTI (also used the 3.44 and the latest 3.45 Firmware)
Guide Camera Zwo Mini 120mm (connected to the AsiAirplus)
Main Camera Sony A7III (connected to the AsiAir Plus)
I've tested both the USB-B to USB-A Cable as well as the EQMOD (Cable RJ45 to USB-A) for connecting the AsiAir Plus to the Star Adventure GTI.
@@nickr3252 hi! Did you find a solution to this ? As well as this issue when I hit home it goes past the home position :-/
👏👍🏻
Does the USB need to be connected for the GTI to use Power from the ASIAir Plus? Just connecting a power cord between the ASIAir Plus and the GTI no power works.
No the GTI power source comes from a power supply. If your powering it through an asiair Plus and you can control the power ports via the app make sure they are on.
If not check the GTI to see if the red led is blinking, if so it should be on.
How do you use the ASIAir for polar alignment with the GTI?
Have you updated the firmware on the gti?
hello how are you, I have the same device with the new asiair mini, but I have the problem that with the cursor that appears in asiair mini, I can only move the arrows from right to left, the arrows up and down, they do nothing, I have the problem that the telescope is not able to go to correctly, I have tried to change the baud rate, but it is still the same, I configure the mount the same as you do, eq mod mount, I don't know if you can help me , thank you so much
with the syn scan pro application the mount works correctly
If I buy a tablet with a 64GB hard drive and just run the ASIAir app, I should have enough space, shouldn't I?
I’d say so, if your using the tablet just to operate the asiair then you’ll be fine because the files don’t save to the tablet, they save to a SD card or internal hard drive space on the ASIAir to transfer to your computer ready for processing later. If your using a dslr then you can save it to the memory card.
Thanks!
Has anyone been able to perform a Meridian flip with this gear? I followed all steps in the video, and also the instructions on the Asiair (disable flipping settings on the synscan app) and nothing seems to work. Thank you!
I have the exact same issue, and it is driving me crazy!! Did you ever find a fix for this? I know it's been a few months since you posted this.
Hope this helps.
@@JohdagM I'll give it a try tonight. Thanks!
I bought one and was very confusing to use not being knowledgeable with the whole thing. It just sits in my garage.
@@bikevatoart7929 yeaa. Some people buy a guitar, just to discover that they can not play guitar. Damagecontrol, sell it 😊
