Paddleboard Fishing With A 65-LB Puppy (Yellow Lab named "Otis")

  • One of my favorite ways to target redfish, snook, and trout on the flats is via my paddleboard!
    So paddleboard fishing is what I typically think of first when it's just me going.
    But I had a couple days when I wasn't able to spend much time with my 7 month-old puppy named Otis... he hardly feels like a puppy at 65 pounds...
    So when I had a spare few hours on a weekend morning I decided it would be worth a shot to bring Otis along for the journey so I could spend some quality time with him while being able to explore a flat I have been wanting to check out for a while.
    What I didn't factor in was all of the delays he'd bring due to falling/jumping in along with the commotion of constantly wanting to play.
    Fortunately, I was on my new L2Fish from Live Watersports (www.livewatersp...) which is a very stable board with a nice wide platform making for enough space for two and enough stability to pull him up on the board when needed.
    But the trip was a blast and I ended up getting some really good shots at a big school of 35+ inch redfish.
    Had one on for a second, but the hook pulled. And then caught up to the school a couple more times but they were not getting fooled.
    All in all, it was a really fun trip so I'll certainly be bringing Otis on the board many more times...
    Although I'll be sure to prepare myself for many stops and spooked fish due to his antics.
    But it'll be time well spent and he'll surely get better over time.

    Well Otis had to learn sometime. When he is all trained up and doing the right thing when he is a mature dog you will be even more proud that he is your bud. I raised my Puppy by taking him most places with me and he learned by experiencing things and I always talked to him. When my 205 Lbs. Eng. Mastiff was matured and doing dog shows he was such a well mannered and obedient fella I was glad I took him to places that he was allowed so he could get him use to the world out side of our house and woods and he was a better dog for it. That initial front end experiences and training paid off for me as it will for you. Your on the right track so good luck with your Pup "Salt Strong Otis". I am sure he will be everything you want him to be and more.

      Thanks for leaving the nice comment. Congrats on raising such a well mannered dog. I'm hoping to do the same... he's still has a ton of energy but he's much more calm than just a couple months ago.... very fun to watch the progress.

    This is an awesome video. We have a 2 1/2 year old and she loves playing in the surf. I plan to take her out on the board with my grandson this spring and summer. Lets see if she will love it as much as we do.

    Not lecturing at all but if you put a dog life jacket on him they typically have a handle in the middle that makes it easier to lift them back up on the board, especially in deeper water. Awesome dogs labs are great!!

    I've been taking my 120 lb golden on my Live 2 Fish board. He's a big boy for a paddle board but he loves it and my Live 2 Fish can handle the weight!

    Nice video Luke! (You too Otis). If you feel like driving, head east on SR60 and come over here to Vero Beach.

      Hey Nick, thanks for leaving the nice comment. Yes, I'll absolutely be making my way over to Vero in the near future... I used to live in Melbourne Beach so fished the Sebastian/Vero areas often. Lots of monster trout over there that I need to introduce Otis to. Tight Lines!

    haha... he tried to bite that trout... awesome video.. .maybe only bring Otis when you are in a boat... Great work.

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  8 лет назад

      Yes, he's better suited for the boat. But the added challenge involved taking him out for some paddleboard fishing is fun too. Tight Lines!

    I bring my GSP everywhere even on my float tube (which sucks) I found out I hate float tubes....
    I'm going to get this board or the L4 after watching your video and seeing how stable it is....
    You think the L2 is plenty big or would you want to move up to the L4 after owning the L2 for a while?
    Otis really wanted to put a hurtin on that fish at the end lol
    Oya you should do a video of you cast netting for bait off the board...
    Thanks for the great video and my GSP is 2 and 100% perfect to bring everywhere, Otis just got way to much puppy in him right now lol (I've been there with mine)
    Thanks again

    you think otis would prefer a 14' paddleboard?

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  8 лет назад

      Absolutely! More room for him to cause trouble in. L2Fish came out with their 14 footer recently, so I'm going to get over there to check it out soon. Tight Lines!

    Do you ever get worried about sharks when he is there with you

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  7 лет назад +1

      The odds of getting hurt by a shark are extremely low, so it's not a worry at all when paddleboard fishing.
