When telling Joan about his life (John's life, not the Doctor) he talks about his parent's Verity his mother and Sidney, his father. Sydney Newman was the BBC Head of Drama who commissioned Doctor Who back in 1963, and Verity Lambert was the woman he chose to be the first Producer/Showrunner, they are essentially The Doctor's parents
It's worth looking up the rest of the Doctor's instructions for Martha. The bit that Martha fast-forwarded through includes The Doctor telling her that he hates pears and she should never let him eat one, uttering the phrase "bingle bongle dingle dangle, yickety-do, yickety-dah, ping pong, lippy-tappy-too-tah," and breaking character and then rambling as Tennant about one of his favourite bands.
Oh yeas!!! Also for anyone who still hasn't seen it, just type in 'Doctor Who Strange Noises with My Mouth - deleted scene' and you'll get 91 seconds well spend with The Doctor/David Tennant.
The actor that plays the main baddie (who is also in game of thrones) is actually the great great great (and a few more greats) grandson of Charles dickins !
This episode as well as the next are based on a 7th Doctor novel called “human nature”. The episodes are actually written by the original novel author, Paul Cornell, who rewrote it for the 10th Doctor and Martha. He also wrote the series 1 episode “Father’s Day”. Speaking of the 7th Doctor his face and several other of the classic Doctor’s are drawn in mr smith’s diary. This is the first time in the new series they’ve shown the classic who incarnations of the Doctor. Likewise the 8th Doctor from the American tv movie is among the faces which marks the first time he’s been pictured in a tv episode of Doctor who. You can find a slowed down version of the Doctor’s instruction video online. He goes over a couple of more rules before talking about needing to keep talking about nothing for a bit longer for the rest of the fast forward part and then immediately jumps into the last instructions we get to see in the actual episode.
I had - still have, in fact - all these seasons in the BBC DVD box sets. This episode, and the two after it, are all on one disc, and I believe it's the greatest DVD I own - Doctor Who firing on all cylinders, infinitely rewatchable, wonderful storytelling, out of this world acting. Just brilliant stuff.
"Timothy's a mystery, wrapped in an enigma" Is NO-ONE going to talk about how you've literally become Doctor Who? (If you know where the line is from you'll understand)
Few can imagine my unbounded glee when I learned a guest character was named "Redfern" in this story. That is actually my family name. And the credits revealed it's even spelled the same way! (Some Britons spell it "Redfearn".) I freely admit it's a ego trip, a "Redfern" in "Doctor Who"! Unrelated, this two-parter was adapted from a novel published during the "wilderness years". That version featured the 7th Doctor and "Ace" as they were the latest characters at the time, 1995.
I've seen this so many times that I almost know it line for line, it's one of my all-time favourite stories. I'll happily watch it again with you now though!
The actor who played Baines did such an amazing job in these two episodes in my opinion. I don't see people talk about it much, but I really loved him in these I wish he'd come back to Doctor Who at some point.
currently watching 5 or 6 people reacting to doctor who, ones going through 1 episode a day some go 1x a week, depends how much you love a cliff hanger
Oh, man, this two parter. It makes me wish so much that Paul Cornell took over as showrunner instead of either Moffet or Chibnall. Between watching his Doctor Who episodes and watching the lovely show he created called Being Human, he would have been a magnificent showrunner for Doctor Who.
Being Human was not created by Cornell but by another Doctor Who scribe, Toby Whithouse. He penned "School Reunion" and several later episodes, plus Torchwood's "Greeks Bearing Gifts".
I'm sure the bit of To Be A Pilgrim that was sung at the beginning was deliberately foreshadowing a certain character's appearance. : "He who would valiant be, ’gainst all disaster, let him in constancy follow the Master."
I think with some episodes of Doctor who, they feel special, they feel big and important. This is one of those stories. It feels sooo good and so special. A bit like the cybermen two parter or Dalek, empty child etc, it feels so grand and big,
The Time Agents were only mentioned once in classic Who and even then it's very vague. It was a 4th Doctor story called "The Talons of Weng Chi-ang" which was the finale to Season 14. The villain basically feared the Doctor was a time agent, seemingly a bit of fugitive from them. The villain also comes from the 51st century just like Jack. As you might guess from the title it's erm... Not aged so well in certain regards, but that aside as story it's typically well regarded by fans.
I always liked Jenny and her being taken over by the family is so heartbreaking because Martha loses one of the few people who was nice to her in that time period. Jenny was innocent and sweet and it’s just really sad what happened to her.
So this two parter is based off the book of the same name although it was with the 7th Doctor just like how the episode Dalek in Series 1 is based off the audio Jubilee with the 6th Doctor (Great audio adventure btw). Also i have a pocketwatch that has the same design on the outside and a lovely design on the inside. One of the coolest purchases i have
I have a copy of Mr Smith's 'Journal of Impossible Things' which is definitely the second coolest thing I own (I have a tiny fragment of TARDIS interior, which has to rank no.1)
The Family is an underated villian. And the next episode gives a glimpse of something you'll more of- why when the Doctor says run, only a fool doesn't listen.
This two-parter is genuinely one of the best in all of Who, at least for me. It tells a clear, concise story that spans far beyond its confines. Doctor Who at its finest.
I really liked Martha in this episode. She had so much to keep in mind AND DO THE WORK OF A HOUSEMAID. Together, that's an incredible amount of work. Thanks as always Chris, I appreciate it hugely.
This two parter is one of my favorites. The side characters are so good. I love the actors playing the family are so creepy. But above all the end is *chef's kiss*
SO EXCITED for you to see this! As you found it is one of the ABSOLUTE TOP DRAWER episodes! There is so much to love about it - and the stakes are so high, because we can't see how it's going to be resolved! Can you imagine, that on the original broadcast, we had to wait A WHOLE EARTH WEEK to see the second part! Also, I absolutely LOVE the Murray Gold's variation on Martha's Theme as she visits the TARDIS in the woods - it's called 'Only Martha Knows' and is absolutely beautiful!
Omg this is great - a double episode with Family of Blood. Such a fantastic run to the final episode of the season. High marque Who. Timothy is an empath.
You can see why this is one of the best two parters the show has even done. Also fun fact, the episode is based off of a doctor who book from the nineties with roughly the same plot (the doctor becoming human and becoming a school teacher in 1913) and has the same title
This was my favorite episode/story for years. It currently sits at #2, but it took a while to get knocked down and only just. Seeing this reaction might’ve put it back up to #1 for me. The score and tone is so good.
I wouldn't even say it if you weren't watching ahead on Patreon, but I can't wait for you to see the end of the next episode. One of the best "Doctor is an awesome and awful power of the cosmos" moments.
This is such a pivotal episode arc between Martha and the Doctor. And informes the choices that follow. Also, the teacher was one of my favorite side characters. Strong and Lovely. ( I would say more but can not without spoilers. )Good stuff. The "family" creeped me out !😂 Also, the boy with the watch played Newt in Maze Runner. Very good actor. 😊
In Classic Who the Time Lords stopped (or tried to stop) other cultures from exploring Time Travel because of the dangers. Some species, like the Daleks, did manage more primitive forms of time travel. Vortex manipulators would have been a definite no-no for the Time Lords
This is a great 2-parter. With the Doctor-assistant romances, it was originally a big no, like a teacher-student (he's 1000, they're normally in their 20s). The US movie tried to force it, which is (part of) why it flopped. There was a lot of controversy when Ecclestone-Rose kissed, but a lot of people allowed it due to the plot line. Old-Who was mainly derisory or patronising about humans, so it was never really an issue So it's a very polarising opinion, which they occasionally play on!
You'll have watched them by the time you read this, but what a triumvirate of episodes coming up. This one and the next two are absolute peak Doctor Who. Series 3 isn't my favourite, and Martha isn't my favourite companion, but what an epic three weeks those were! 🙂
If you ever wanted to actually watch what it was that Marth fastforwarded through, I suggest looking up "Doctor Who Strange Noises I Make with my Mouth". It's incredibly funny. He just rambles for around a minute
I would defiantly say Martha's relationship with the doctor is a unrequited love story, she loves him as someone would love a celebrity crush but he see's her as just a good friend, because the doctor is still in-love with rose so he can't focus on loving someone else in that same way. I think Martha thinks she can sift the love he has for rose to herself, but considering the way the doctor behaves around her it doesn't look like it is going to go her way. This part one and part two are two of the most popular episodes of new who.
It's so hard waiting for doctor who each week! I'm excited to watch. I hope no one spoils anything in your comments. (not saying due to this episode, I just mean in general for the whole show I hope nothing gets spoiled)
I love the pacing, but spoilers have been a minor issue. Nothing too major.I am trying to quicken the pace a little, but also watch further ahead before releasing them on RUclips.
Romance for the Doctor is a bit controversial among some fans myself included. I dont "hate" it to any silly degree - its a show, whatever and all that, but as a classic who fan which had only 2 instances of "there is definitely some flirting going on here" with companions over 26 seasons, I do find New Who leans too much on it. You put your finger on the heart of the matter immediately: Its ultimately pointless beyond the immediate moment due to the nature of the show itself. Also I just prefer a more "alien" Doctor over the "romantic hero" approach in general.
I have to admit that most of Martha's story lines are not my favorite. They are good and it is not her fault. She is a great companion. But from this episode on, this season is amazing. They finally are using her effectively and it does a good job of expanding the plot. And LOTS of creepy things!
You're like me, get all cringe and ew when someone says "lover". As Tina Fey said in 30 Rock, the only appropriate time to use the word "lover" is between "meat" and "pizza".

One of my patrons sent it to me and it was amazing. So funny.
THAT'S where the lippy-tappy-too-tah audio is from! I never knew xD
Thank you, I will seek it out 🇬🇧
This two-parter is one of the best in the entire Tennant era. The premise and the writing are excellent, but the acting is on a whole other level.
The actor that plays the main baddie (who is also in game of thrones) is actually the great great great (and a few more greats) grandson of Charles dickins !
Harry Lloyd is a great villain actor. Loved seeing him play a much nicer character in the BBC series of _Robin Hood_ from the early 2000s. 😁
Dickens🎩
Harry Lloyd is a fantastic actor
No you had it right, it's 3x great
This is the start of SUCH a great run of stories.....
Yep. Pretty much all bangers right up to the Season finale.
I think the actor who plays Timothy is a time lord... he doesn't age! He's 34 now and still has a boyish face.
Yes, he does! I first saw him in the Maze Runner.

It's actually Bernice Summerfield rather than Ace who's with the Doctor at this time.
@@GrumpyOldGit-zk1kw Oops! Okay, I'll confess I haven't actually read the original novel and just assumed Ace was still with the Doctor.
I've seen this so many times that I almost know it line for line, it's one of my all-time favourite stories. I'll happily watch it again with you now though!
my favourite story ever!! love this two parter. paul cornell is a great writer - he also wrote ‘father’s day’ from series 1!

I love when people keep two parters together.
The actor who plays Timothy is great as a chess master in The Queen’s Gambit. A great little seven episode series.
probably my favourite 2 parter in all of doctor who
Heaven Sent/Hell Bent is a close 2nd though
