    I have been a painter for as long as I can remember. Inking and linework have never been appealing to me. Now that I'm trying to learn it, I am overwhelmed. It's thanks to tutorials like yours that I manage to make progress.

    I've seen quite a few Inking tutorials but this one is by far the most helpful. Watching how you do the brush strokes so closely is very helpful, especially watching how you blend the tapered lines together going from thin to thick. I've been trying to find a video that show me and this one is PERFECT! Thank you very much!

    Thank you so much for this video. I’ve learned so much from it. I’m a Brazilian color artist learning new skills, and this vídeo sincerely brought me to tears in the beginning. Robson Rocha is a Brazilian comic book artist and he recently passed away due to COVID (a few months ago in fact). I feel this is also an amazing tribute to him and his amazing work. Thank you once again for this amazing video. 🥰

      Hi Michelle Rezende. Thank you for the kind words. When I made this video, Robson Rocha was still around. I’m fact, after I’ve inked the piece and uploaded the video, I told Robson and he looked at the art and video. He even responded saying that’s was his old work and not as good. I told him that to me it’s really good and that’s why I wanted to ink this piece. He’s a very kind artist. Thank you again for watching and I’ll have more tutorials coming soon! Stay tuned.

      @WaldenWongArt  3 года назад +2

      Hi Gary Banner. Same with me. It’s just easier going from thin to thick. Works more gradually and more controls knowing how thin the tip of the brush is. As for the top of the lips, I prefer lighter, thinner lines; this provides,
    not only a 'break' from all those thicker lines, but a bit more realism.
    Even a 'Broken line' works great for the lips.

      @WaldenWongArt  2 года назад

      @WaldenWongArt  Год назад +1

      Hi Jerry. Thank you again for watching my video and for this comment. Haha. That was funny. I actually don’t dip ink over the artwork usually. But in the past when I make real time inking videos, viewers ask how often I would need to dip ink. Because I was doing that off screen. So for demonstrations, I would show the camera when I would need to get ink. And believe me, it’s nerve racking when I’m holding that bottle of ink over the artwork for the camera to see. Because anything can happy and accidentally spill ink over the art. Haha.

    I always wipe the edge of my ruler with a tissue with some Windex on it. Because if you don't it will smear your panel boarder lines! I also always have a piece of paper underneath my hand while I'm inking. So that you don't smear the ink all over the your drawing!

    • @WaldenWongArt
      @WaldenWongArt  2 года назад

      Hi Loring Bush. Thank you for watching my video. I’ve seen other artist use windex to clean off their ruler to ink so the ink doesn’t smear on the paper. What I do is I’ll attach coins underneath the ruler to give it a beveled edge. To make the ruler raised up slightly. So if ink does attached itself to the ruler, it still won’t touch the paper as it’s now levitated. When I ink, I mentally keep track of where I last inked and making sure my hands stay away from the inked area so I don’t accidentally smudge the ink. Ink usual drys in less than a minute and it won’t smear afterward. Especially waterproof India ink. Now if I were to use some kind of non waterproof ink or a ball point pen ink, those ink is going to smear and I would use a paper to separate my hand from the inked area. Which is why I prefer using waterproof inking ink. Those won’t smear when dried

    Awesome tutorial, and beautiful inks, Walden! You always present your videos so clearly and expertly. You do your blacks and line weights with such ease. What is your opinion of brush pens? Pentel, Micron, Faber-Castell, and Tombow make brush pens that I've considered buying and using. Thanks so much for all you do for us, and stay well, my friend!

    • @WaldenWongArt
      @WaldenWongArt  4 года назад +9

      Hi Rometiklan! Thank you for the kind words, my friend. The Aquash Brush pen that you see me using in the video is my favorite. I've tried all the other brush pens out there and they all work well. I just this Aquash Brush pen because it doesn't cost as much to replace and very little maintenance. Other brushes such as Windsor & Newton or Raphael, when I'm done inking, I would need to wash, shampoo, and condition. This brush I use, I don't even need to clean. I just keep using it over and over. Also, the Pentel, Micron, Faber-Castell, and Tombow brushes are also good for when I'm traveling or doing commissions at comic book conventions. I won't have to carry bottle of ink with me and these brush pens can do the job just as quick. Sometimes they'll run out of ink, but you can still continue using them by dipping it into ink. There ARE other brush pens where the 'brush' isn't really a brush with hairs. They're more like a foam or felt that's shaped like a brush. They can be good for the beginning of it's use, but after a while, that sharp tip disappears. When that happens, that brush pen is only good for spotting big ink areas. Hope that answers your question, Rometiklan! Thank you for all your support, my friend. Stay safe and be well!

    • @WaldenWongArt
      @WaldenWongArt  Год назад

      Hi Alex. Thank joy for watching my video. That’s not a stupid question at all. I rarely clean my brushes. I just leave the ink there on the brush for months sometimes. And if brush tips every gets stiff from the ink, I just swish the brush into a bottle of water for a few seconds, press down on it to crack that stiffness, and I’m off to inking again. There’s really no need to clean these Aquash Pentel Brush pens as their made of nylon. As for the quill pens, I’ll just used a rag to wipe it clean and dry. Never used water and that will make your quill nibs rust instantly. The only pens I do need to clean are the Rapidograph KoKinoor technical pens. And here’s my video on how I do that. ruclips.net/video/IY3mwzhg8MU/видео.html

    Do you only dip the aquash brush and not use the reservoir? Just clean with water when done?

    • @WaldenWongArt
      @WaldenWongArt  4 года назад +6

      Hi Myron Mielke! I only dip the aquash brush and not used the reservior. You may have see some of my other videos where I HAVE filled the reservoir. And I fill those ones where the brushes because the brush tips are not sharp anymore. I'll use those to fill in large ink areas.
      I also get asked that same question about cleaning when done. I don't wash them clean as often as they are nylon brushes. The Aquash Brush is just like those other brushes in the market where they have pre-filled ink in the reservoir. When artist use THOSE brush, they never clean them. They just keep using them over and over again until they're all out of ink. If they were to clean them after every use, that would mess up the ink inside the reservoir. And you're able to use that brush over and over without cleaning. That's why I love using this brush. Once in a LONG while, I will give the Aquash brush a few swirls in the water. That's when the ink is dried out on the brush tips on non usage. But I usually ink everyday it there's no chance of it getting dried out. Other than that, I just ink, put brush away, and come back later to continue inking. Hope that answers your question. Thank you for watching and please subscribe if you haven't done so already. More videos coming soon!

    great video. I didn't know inking was still around in the industry. Where can i find pencil drawings to use for practice?

      Hi dcsanders92. Yes, comic publishers still use inking today. Without the inking, the comic art would be greyish from pencils. Some artist do digital art and they still ink digitally. Hi Kaiesis. Thank you for watching my video. I absolutely love Bernie Wrightson’s work. Inking as well as both penciling and ink. He’s a legend along legends. Love his work so much that I was able to ink a commission over one of his pencils. Here’s the link to my video where I showed my inks over Bernie Wrightons pencils. This one is a good video. So this is the real speed at which inking is done? At least when done right.. I’ve been used to seing so many ffw videos that this looks almost painstakingly slow, but in a good way 🙂 thank you for this!

      Hi Ciprian Morariu. Thank you for watching my video. Yes, this is real time speed at how I’ve ink that small panel, which was about 2x4 inches ik size. I also make fast forward videos as well. And there are some videos on my channel that’s over three hours long. Also real time drawing, inking and coloring. If you enjoy this video and like to see more, sun my channel. Hi Fikioris. Thank you for watching my video. The Aquash Brush pen you see me using in the video only comes in three size. Large, medium, small and flat. So the one I’m using is small. Here’s a link to the same brushes you see me using this this video. amzn.to/3Sv8BL9

    What kind of inks were you using on the pentel brush pen? Im afraid of blocking the pen channel by using the wrong type of ink.

    • @WaldenWongArt
      @WaldenWongArt  26 дней назад +1

      Thank you for watching my video. You can also use any brand of ink to refill any type of these microns, fineliners and brush pens. After refilling, they will work just like new. After you refill them and if it still doesn’t work, it may be that the tips of your microns are dried out. In that case, get some rubbing alcohol and dip the pens in there for a few good minutes. That will break down the dried ink inside the tips and allow ink to flow again. Then refill and it’ll be just like new. Thank you again for watching. Hi Just Some Salty Boi. Thank you for watching my video. You can do it. Sometimes when I see a lot of details in art, I’ll break it down into smaller sections and concentrate one at a time. This way, it’s not a daunting. By the time you’re finished with each section, you’ll be done in no time. Didn’t the old timers like Jack Kirby use a brush exclusively?

    • @WaldenWongArt
      @WaldenWongArt  2 месяца назад +1

      Thank you so much for watching my video and for the comment. Yes, a lot of the old timers used brush exclusively. It wasn’t until maybe around the time Image Conics formed that a lot of artist started using other inking tool such as a quill nib, microns and more. If you enjoy this video and like to see more, please subscribe to my channel. I’ll have more tutorials coming soon.

    Mr Wong what is the reason comic book inkers use blue lines for inking?..and how do you remove the blue lines.im so confused

    • @WaldenWongArt
      @WaldenWongArt  3 года назад +1

      Hi TK Arts. I was actually thinking about making a video on how to remove the blue lines. Your comment just gave me that extra push.
      Inkers these days used bluelines because it’s faster for the pencils to get to the inker once it’s done. Besides using a shipping service to send the original art out, it may take days for the inker to receive. When a penciled is done with the pencils, they can scan it. Email the grey pencils to the inker and the Inker can start work on it immediately. Now, the inker would convert the grey pencils to bluelines. While inking, they can see what needs to be inked. When done with inking and scanned, we can knock out all the blue lines on the computer via Photoshop and leave only the black ink.
      TK Arts. I’m going to make a video about this and demonstrate how I remove the blue so it’ll be clear. Thank you for the idea!

      Thanks mr wong i was so confused about the blue lines .as for inking practice i always change my Pencil lines inti blue lines...and as for removing the blue lines i just change it to black and white idk if that's the correct way if removing the blue lines.. thanks again mr wong

      @@crakoa1254 when you’re drawing with a blue pencil for sketching, majority of the time, you won’t be able to completely erase that blue pencil. Those are “non-photo blue” pencils. Meaning once you sketch everything in with the blue pencil, you can draw on top with regular grey pencil. Then when scanning the set, the scanner won’t pick up majority of the blue pencils. Which is why inks print out Blue lines to ink. So when don’t, they’ll scan and the scanner won’t pick up any of the blue. Every now and then, when scanning is color, you will pick up the blue under the grey pencils or inks. When that happens, I’ll use photoshop and remove all the blue pencils at a click of a button. Very fast and easy. Leaning only the grey pencils or completed inks. So to remove any type of blue pencil or blue lines, the only way to do that is digitally, in my case... using Photoshop. That’s the only way to remove any kind of blue. Digitally.
