mkl62 Given the fact that at the end of the boot camp part of the movie, Joker found him sitting on a commode in the head with his rifle and loading rounds into a magazine, I'd say it was pretty clear that the then-psychotic Pyle had murder in mind. Probably go into the compartment and kill Hartman, Cowboy and Joker first, then pick off as many as he could, but save the last bullet for himself so he could blow his own head off, after.
Probably Hartman and Cowboy. Deep down, despite what happened here, he knew that Joker was his friend. That's why he couldn't bring himself to shoot him. To Pyle, he was the loving mother figure while the DI was the abusive father figure. I know a then 13 year old boy who murdered his father about a few years of abuse. The main thing was that he lost his mother at the age of 9. His father wanted him to kiss his mother in the casket, but he couldn't bring himself to do it. Also, near the end, after shooting the female sniper, Rafterman mentally rapes her (look at his body motions).
mkl62 Perhaps. It would be prudent, however, to bear in mind that Joker essentially turned on him when he finally beat him with his bar of soap, though. That could easily have given Pyle reason enough to think Joker a turncoat, yet not worth killing him there and then, mainly because up to the point where Joker finally vented his frustration with him, Joker had done everything he could to try to help him. In all probability, Pyle probably figured Joker would get his ass blown away in Vietnam. I mean, look at Pyle's face as he eventually lowers the rifle. The look in his eyes basically says, "You're not even fucking worth me wasting a bullet on you, shithead." Then he plopped down on the toilet seat, stuck the muzzle in his mouth, and, white wall...[BLAM!!], red wall!
+Nathan Hazlett They're lucky I wasn't Pyle..I'd have cornered EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM, one by one, and fucked their asses up so bad they would leave.
+Sheldon Sherwood Yep, I wouldn't want to be there in the first place, I would whip some ass until they shot me to death, I would rather die fighting than being forced by Uncle Sam against my will. That poor kid was slow, he shouldn't have even been there.
+Frank Furlacker Remember, they were drafted into this, and this beating was done to Pyle because they were taking the rap for his incompetence. That's pretty much what I go through at my current job where I deal with idiots who screw up on the job,and guess who has to fix it ALL THE TIME.
carlos Martinez The whole thug of boot camp filtering out the weak is bullshit, pure bullshit. It simply there to make you trained to kill, but its traumatic to many. Combined with actual war, and what Pyle did isn't surprising, and sadly too common. A lot of soldiers snap once they're away from the military, and result to abuse of many things. Many even kill themselves.
More like Hartman failed in the first place. He should've noticed that Pyle wasn't fit for the Marines, but more importantly his methods in 'undoing' the past selves of the recruits were completely wrong. You don't need to be liked, just respected. Respect comes when you fairly castigate and affirm people, not when you use physical violence, racial slurs, and psychological harm. Even R. Lee Emrey, Hartman's actor, said Hartman would be a terrible DI and that such actions would get him court-martialed if this were real life.
@@machirim2805 This is absolutely right. People somehow forget that this movie is not endorsing anything about the military system. I remember seeing legit dozen-page online slapfights for decades about how people are still in denial that Hartman was a really really shitty DI.
Without a doubt, he may not have said it directly but it was clearly a hint that pyle would need some "special" motivation to whip him into shape, this can be followed by the fact that hartman most likely ignored pyle's crying which was obviously loud
At the very end of this scene..... Joke putting his hands over his ears. A combination of covering his ears to try and drown out the noise of Pyle's crying, and she look of shame and regret. "What have I done?"
When I was in boot camp we talked about doing that to a few but never did it. Don't think I could of done that to anyone and there were some real chewed up dudes in boot camp.
I believe anyone can be driven to the point where talk isn't sufficient anymore. And I think that's what the movie is trying to tell us. He's an unlucky bastard. He has good intentions, but keeps fucking up. In the end, he drives the entire platoon to do SOMETHING. The only thing they know how to do. And finally, it drives him to the point where he snaps.
Hardcore Halo because people like Pyle make boot camp 100x more miserable than what it already is. It’s already difficult as it is being away from your family, getting smoked by the DIs on the quarterdeck, and the overall training being tough. Anyone who adds to that makes you dislike that individual...especially when you are a repeat offender. It’s hard to explain this to a civilian but being in that situation you would understand.
The part at the end of the scene where Joker places his hands over his ears to drown out Leonard's wails after everyone's returned to their bunks following the blanket party is such an emotional bit, surely he felt bad about it happening (The expression on his face really shows, i'm sure he felt like he wanted to shed tears there but didn't or couldn't) though he did hesitate at 1:26 before the other guy forced him into hitting Leonard those last few times. He really didn't want to do it but i'm sure if he hadn't complied they would've likely done the same thing to him later.

The main culprit here is Joker, who should have known better. For all his supposed independent thinking , denying the Virgin Mary, even daring to challenge the drill instructor, and his unwillingness to do any more than report the combat, he let himself down totally, when he should have supported Pyle.
+Pete Owen Deep down, Joker was on Pyle's side. That's why he didn't kill him. Now figure this: If Joker had not hit him, he would have been next and he knew it. I really blame Cowboy for it. While they couldn't show it, Pyle should have gone for the DI's head and then go into the barracks, cornered Cowboy, and blown his brains out. They would have looked like that boy that was shot and killed at Kent State. The whole left side of his head was gone, no thanks to our government.
I would like to know how he got the jelly doughnut, not to mention the ammo, into the barracks. I know people that went through marine basic. They said that the DI's watch you like hawks. Try putting chow or bullets in your pocket and see what happens.
For those of you who though Pyle "deserved this", I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure you're the exact kind of person Kubrick was trying to call out with this film. You think that the beating of a (implied to be mentally handicapped) man is acceptable, simply because he messed up in a military program he was forced to attend? The idea that was can be so robotic and cold, and look at our fellow man in such a cruel way is disgusting. It's a machine, that makes humans inhuman and perverts their nature. I believe war is necessary at many times, and I am in no way anti-military. But behavior like this is just reprehensible.
This happened because Pyle intentionally fucked up his progress of losing weight and getting better with the training by sneaking a jelly doughnut in his foot locker. His earlier mess-ups in the film were because he wasn't fit enough to surpass the expectations or too fearful to remember movements right. Pyle started to succeed when Hartman told Joker to help him. And then everything went wrong when Hartman found a jelly doughnut in Pyle's foot locker. "What is that, Private Pyle?!" "Sir, a jelly doughnut, sir!" "A jelly doughnut?! Is chow allowed in the barracks, Private Pyle?" "Sir, no, sir!" "Are you allowed to eat jelly doughnuts, Private Pyle?!" "Sir, no, sir!" "And why not, Private Pyle?!" "Sir, because I'm too heavy, sir!" That, right there, proves that Pyle _knew_ better than to sneak junkfood like that into his foot locker but did it anyway.
I'm 16 right now, ending my Sophmore year and understand this to a point. Same with a the suicide scene. I was basically Pyle growing up. I was a fat kid who didn't care for school and didn't conform to others ideals. I played football in middle school and got into somewhat better shape than before. But I still went through a lot of bullshit and still do. I only played half of football season this year because I spend 8months doing an advanced powerlifters workout and screwed up my back in so many ways. I was given so much shit and berated by everyone to the point I was ready to give up. But I'm better now and I've passed the older guys in strength and skill by a longshot because I'm smart about it now. But it's still no different at home. My dad is worse than Hartman, to him I'm just a servant to do everything, me and my mom both while he sits on his lazy ass and does nothing. To him I think I'm the disappointment and can't conform to his "standards" like Pyle couldn't for the Marines. Pyle was most likely drafted and if he wasn't he still shouldn't have been allowed into basic or should've been sent home before something the suicide scene and the blanket party could've been avoided. All in all and to sum things up. People are dicks. People like the ones in this platoon can suck it up. I know it's it's movie but I'm sure there's a few who act just like this. Instead of beating him try and help more, there's consequences and punishments in the end. People are just to fucking ignorant and stupid
This kind of stuff really happened when I was in boot camp in 1990. And, it wasn't isolated with just with one person. In fact, it happened quite frequently.
Vincent Dinofrio is an amazing actor - very nice guy too. There is a RUclips of an interview with him that's worth watching. He really made the first half of Full Metal Jacket his own. In the context of the movie - this beatdown made him a better marine but sent him in a downward spiral at the same time. I'm not a cinema expert - but it was an effective character development. In the end, he was a better marine but at what cost. Hard to answer but that made his role in the film so effective. Hard to watch the scene - it may be only Hollywood but boy it seemed real.
I remember when i was about to see this as a teen, I had seen alot of war movies and they all kind of glorified war in some way, and I was expecting a similar war movie. And I was blown away by the acting, plot, intense, funny and horrible scenes of this masterpiece that actually turned out to be an antiwar movie, that made you look at it with disgust. Stanley is a friggin genius
For those of you who don't know, the reason they beat him up was because he fucked up CONSTANTLY and the DI made the platoon exercise because of it, it was basically a way of saying 'Stop fucking up.'
If somebody got me in trouble I'd be pissed to, though if I were the last guy, I'd just toss the soap sock aside and tell him sternly "look, your fucking up and being silly is getting us all a beating and we get smoked while you go Scott free and that's fucking bullshit! You quit getting us busted for stuff you're doing, like sneaking the jelly donut into the barracks and we get our asses blistered while you gnosh on the damn thing! It's about time that you got what was coming to you!"
Pyle looking at Joker screaming “what are you doing?” Is what got me. Joker was about the only friend he had and really didn’t want to hit him but knew he would be next if he didn’t.
I think since Pyle was a bad soldier, he should just been kicked out of the military and not attack. That drill instructor constantly stayed on his case and being hated and beatened by the other soldiers drove him insane. I felt bad for Pyle.
Yeah It's so simple to see this, but half of the comments blame him for eating too much. While that’s partially true, it wasn’t the main problem. If it were, why didn't they just kick him out?"
Love how Pyle seems to suffer the most when Joker starts hitting him, the fact that he succumbed to peer pressure and also joined in is what hit him the hardest.
Nobody deserves that, and nobody deserves to die. Pyle was unstable and should have been from the first minute he got there, the pressure is high but they were being prepared to be killing machines, war is not a game.
He was drafted, too... So he didn't deserve it at all. Think about it... Maybe he was happy before he was drafted into the military. The whole thing upsets me... Even if it is just a movie.
Private Joker didn't wanna hit him because he was his friend but did it anyway because Private Cowboy told him to. That beating is what made Private Pyle mad at the drill instructor which was why he shot him. Then he shot himself.
My dad told me the story of a dude that got beat up like that in his platoon. They got the idea of the soap from this movie, as before it they only used wet towels with a knot at the end. They did it to recruits like a "cult ritual" as in "welcome to the army", but also used to punish a soldier that was giving the platoon problems. The guy was an asshat from the upper class that wanted to serve as an enlisted because he wanted to be with the "real soldiers. But the guy, thinking that he was going to be the "martyr" that rose against the tirany of the drill sargeants, instead got the wrath of the entire platoon as, obviously, every time the dude would go against the drill sargeants, they would punish the platoon instead. Dad said he would go to prison at first, but after two times the sargeants went for the group punishment. Because the guy's dad was rich and influential (politician), he wouldn't be discharged. They wrapped the guy in his own bedsheet and the entire platoon went ham, they didn't put a cloth in his mouth though, so he screamed loud, but no one noticed, or at least didn't cared enough. He asked to go home the next day.
Amazing acting on Vincents' part though. I genuinely believe he is in pain, that is hard to fake right. And his screams and crying, it's almost like music - I can listen to that shit all night, fall asleep to it, it's so pure :)
Well, some people are idiots - this has the potential to break bones, lots of them, though I'm sure Stanley Kubrick asked the stunt coordinator to slip one or two real bars of soap in there to make it 'look more real' xD Can you imagine the stunt coordinator's look on his face? :P . . __ "Uuhm... How 'bout NO?"
JefErickson In an interview I watched, D'Onofrio said they used Styrofoam. His reaction was just some incredible first rate acting that was worthy of an Oscar.
He was my favorite character. He's challenged but he was getting so much better. 2 minor slip ups and this is what he gets? Wtf. I was heart broken and cried a lot
Its quite wild to watch the consequences of this most inhumane abuse, where Pyle actually overperforms and takes everybody by surprise, even drill instructor Hartmann. Then everything turns ugly very fast.
Am I the only one who thinks Hartman was actually in on the recruits beating Pyle with soup to "give him the proper motivation"? Would explain why he didn't intervene.
mkl62 they put a shirt over pyle’s mouth so he couldn’t scream. Hartman probably didn’t hear all the pounding from the soap bars. After all old people need more sleep
The Gunny and the Marine Corps should have dishonored him much sooner instead of waiting until the last minute. He stole all the donuts and hide it in the locker, while it is unlocked. Private Gomer Pyle should have learned his place and accept the fact that he stole the donuts in the first place. Stealing has no place and you will get punished or disciplined for it. It is very similar to lying or cheating or maybe both of them put together. It is Gomer Pyle's fault that he stole donuts and hide it in the locker and forgot to lock it in the first place.
Mason Campbell Because HE fucked up. All he had to do was follow the rules for a few weeks, but instead he decided to be a clown and got everyone else ass fucked for it. And then continued to be a lazy clown proving he didn't care for his fellow soldiers. Should have just blead him in that bed and saved everyone a lot of shit.
The military refers to them as " blanket parties" and the bar soap feels like a brick; everybody gets one hit.
Some people got in more than one hit.
Charles Gerhardt fuck boot camp it's a load of shit and most of it is not needed.
my question is how the hell did pyle survive? if what you're sayings true, his ribs would've broken and he'd die of internal bleeding.

He probably also thought about going after Cowboy. But Cowboy got his over there, though.
he knew everyone hated him, but he thou he at least had one friend, someone that cared, after this he snapped thinking his rifle was his only friend
I just realized after so many years watching this scene, that private joker slept with his glasses on.
😅
if you notice, I swear his glasses never fall off 😭😭😭😂😂😂
He was clearly a bit slow, or at the very least not meant for the military. I was absolutely shocked when I saw this scene for the first time.
He really got Pearl harbored 😐.
Hard scene to watch. And militaries today still face these sort of situations.
Then you go to the military if you're such a tough guy.
+Frank Furlacker oh no, here is a democrat
That's why I love this movie, because it's an emotional roller coaster. You have scenes that are amusing just before this, then you get this scene.
And then the Vietnamese hooker
And it doesn't even feel forced.
As much as I hated Pyle this scene always really got to me.
Bonk, Herr of Tim sure
carlos Martinez The whole thug of boot camp filtering out the weak is bullshit, pure bullshit. It simply there to make you trained to kill, but its traumatic to many. Combined with actual war, and what Pyle did isn't surprising, and sadly too common. A lot of soldiers snap once they're away from the military, and result to abuse of many things. Many even kill themselves.

I felt bad for Leonard.
Hartman: "I have failed because you people have not given him the proper motivation". This must have been the motivation he was alluding to.
Hartman paid for it
@@garyc3936 damm right he did
More like Hartman failed in the first place.
D'Onofrio was fantastic in this movie, such an underrated actor
Check him out in the original MEN IN BLACK as edgar that meets "The Bug"
When I was in boot camp we talked about doing that to a few but never did it. Don't think I could of done that to anyone and there were some real chewed up dudes in boot camp.
I believe anyone can be driven to the point where talk isn't sufficient anymore.
And I think that's what the movie is trying to tell us.
He's an unlucky bastard. He has good intentions, but keeps fucking up.
In the end, he drives the entire platoon to do SOMETHING. The only thing they know how to do.
And finally, it drives him to the point where he snaps.
Why would you do that to someone?
TheRealGunfish I’ve never done this either but we did choke the scribe

The last thing needed to make him load the M14 magazine.

@@mikejohn29mj SPOILER ALERT: He got shot and killed during combat later on on the movie
this made him cold-blooded KINGPIN~~!!
nah it made him ded
No you're missing the reference. The actor that played Private Pyle is now playing the villain Kingpin in the Marvel Daredevil series.
That's sort of the point of the whole film. War depletes the soul and moral compass.
If you're talking about Pyle's beating that's his fault he should've known not to sneak in the jelly doughnut
I would like to know how he got the jelly doughnut, not to mention the ammo, into the barracks. I know people that went through marine basic. They said that the DI's watch you like hawks. Try putting chow or bullets in your pocket and see what happens.
At least after reluctantly taking part in the beating of Pyle, Joker felt guilty afterwards...The look on his face said "Oh, God! What have I done???"
My mother used to say that Stanley Kubrick hated people. I have to agree.
Fucking hippie
This happened because Pyle intentionally fucked up his progress of losing weight and getting better with the training by sneaking a jelly doughnut in his foot locker.
His earlier mess-ups in the film were because he wasn't fit enough to surpass the expectations or too fearful to remember movements right.
Pyle started to succeed when Hartman told Joker to help him.
And then everything went wrong when Hartman found a jelly doughnut in Pyle's foot locker.
"What is that, Private Pyle?!"
"Sir, a jelly doughnut, sir!"
"A jelly doughnut?! Is chow allowed in the barracks, Private Pyle?"
"Sir, no, sir!"
"Are you allowed to eat jelly doughnuts, Private Pyle?!"
"Sir, no, sir!"
"And why not, Private Pyle?!"
"Sir, because I'm too heavy, sir!"
That, right there, proves that Pyle _knew_ better than to sneak junkfood like that into his foot locker but did it anyway.
When the fuck has war been necessary for anything?

It's the most saddest scene I had ever seen in a movie.
Very well said young man. GL to you in the future.

thanks for this comment mate, summed up a lot of feelings I recalled while watching this scene and this part of the film in general.
I felt so bad for him. Poor guy.
I believe Private Pyle getting caught with the jelly doughnut in the barracks was what compelled the rest of the platoon to give him a blanket party.
This kind of stuff really happened when I was in boot camp in 1990. And, it wasn't isolated with just with one person. In fact, it happened quite frequently.
Has it happened to you?

This is the "proper motivation" that the drill sergeant mentioned when he found the donut.
I think since Pyle was a bad soldier, he should just been kicked out of the military and not attack. That drill instructor constantly stayed on his case and being hated and beatened by the other soldiers drove him insane. I felt bad for Pyle.

Love how Pyle seems to suffer the most when Joker starts hitting him, the fact that he succumbed to peer pressure and also joined in is what hit him the hardest.
i saw this movie when i was a kid and the only scenes i remember was the jelly doughnut scene, this scene, and him shooting himself.
I don't know how Pyle was even able to sleep. I'd be too paranoid, not that I'd be dumb enough to get myself in that situation to begin with.
This scene broke my heart man.
I felt pretty sorry for what he gone through even though he had a tough time in Training and shit I think he should of never deserved it.
Nobody deserves that, and nobody deserves to die. Pyle was unstable and should have been from the first minute he got there, the pressure is high but they were being prepared to be killing machines, war is not a game.

Private Joker didn't wanna hit him because he was his friend but did it anyway because Private Cowboy told him to. That beating is what made Private Pyle mad at the drill instructor which was why he shot him. Then he shot himself.

Me too.
It made me so sad when he sat up and kept crying
Pyle slowly but surely snapped after this.

Amazing acting on Vincents' part though. I genuinely believe he is in pain, that is hard to fake right. And his screams and crying, it's almost like music - I can listen to that shit all night, fall asleep to it, it's so pure :)
JefErickson some people think he was actually being legit
Well, some people are idiots - this has the potential to break bones, lots of them, though I'm sure Stanley Kubrick asked the stunt coordinator to slip one or two real bars of soap in there to make it 'look more real' xD Can you imagine the stunt coordinator's look on his face? :P

JefErickson In an interview I watched, D'Onofrio said they used Styrofoam. His reaction was just some incredible first rate acting that was worthy of an Oscar.
