"Among Trees" Review by Polly Raine

An overview of the exhibition Among Trees, August 2 through 26, 2012, at the Darkroom Gallery in Essex Junction, Vermont. The Darkroom Gallery and its owner, Ken Signorello, is dedicated to photographers and photography. It hosts juried photography exhibits, providing opportunities for photographers from around the world to have their work evaluated by a qualified juror for display in our Vermont gallery, on our web site and for publication in exhibit catalogs. Polly Raine and producer Clement Yonkers work together to bridge their appreciation for the visual and performing arts to the public at large. As Photographers, Artists, Musicians, and Educators, Polly and Clement enjoy the Interdisciplinary approach to creative projects such as these.
Juror's Statement:
"Trees have always fascinated me. I have many fond memories of trees as far back as I can remember. I have climbed many, fallen out of a couple, and always chose them as the first place to hide when playing hide and seek. Who hasn't been susceptible to the charms of a handsome tree?
With a wildly diverse group and record breaking amount of entries I was given the daunting task of selecting a cohesive collection. This was especially difficult because the quality of the work was amazingly high and I am very sorry to disappoint the artists whose work was not chosen. Many of the images not chosen were simply a result of having a limited number of final choices, or in some cases similar themes.
Since trees have such a universal application as symbolic reference point, and strong position as cultural, philosophical and religious landmark I wanted to be able to represent as many examples as possible. I learned so much through this process, felt grateful to be a part of it and thank everyone for sharing their view of trees with me."
