Interesting timing! I've actually been starting to play with colours lately. It's fun to just get a little wacky and exaggerated with it because when you pull it back in, you get a really nice tone (play ugly to play pretty - hope that makes sense!)

TOTALLY makes sense and really one of my philosophies in playing and teaching!

Thank you so much! I was wondering how to play with more colors and this came in the right time!

A shakuhachi player: "So, I see you're catching up."
A synesthete: "That's not yellow, that's cyan with a hint of grassgreen."
To me colors are more related/associated with pitches & overtones, so the flute alone can make green, cyan, blue kind of colors, but will barely make any red, maybe some yellow here and there, more faded orange only in the lowest range, and purple is very rare to me in music in general.
It's also related to timbre (overtones and such) but less so, so a specific note on a specific instrument will tend to have a similar color regardless of slight timbre change.
Maybe I'm just talking bullocks. That's how I perceive it, it's not a rule at all, just my personal thing.

i also have synesthesia, so with music i tend to associate sounds and timbre with different colors.

Good to see someone talk about this in relation to flute, the inside of the mouth I call my cathedral of resonating chambers. Plenty of vids discuss the lips, this is the first that mentions much about the inside of the mouth.
Vocals are more highly trained for me than flutes so I bring the awareness of the resonating chambers to the instrument already somewhat trained. I discovered the basics of isolating harmonics like Tuvan singers do, and I can drone and separate my distortion box like the buzzing monks of Tibet that keeps my vocal folds safe from damage such that I can still croon and wail from bass to soprano.
Flute practice, wow! Droning tones on flute my mouth increasingly learns to relax. Then when I go to sing, say practicing with Dio or The Cure, or singing with Dead Can Dance, both singers my high notes are easier than ever shrieking and roaring with Dio, or the Classical spin of DCD, or the softer but still strong and flexible, and highly expressive vocals of Robert Smith. My vocal folds have long been flexible and strong for the range I enjoy, all the way up into squeaks and whistles and down to low C, like the one on a bass guitar, but the high notes would often get muffled from my lack of skill in holding open that cathedral in my head. Flute is fixing that up right quick.

hey I'm interested in picking up the flute for use in experimental rock and jazz music. I'm not really intent on playing much classical or playing as fast as classical players. how much should I spend on a flute to get a feel for the instrument? thanks.
