False oleander scale, often called magnolia scale, is common on Sweet Bay magnolias in our NW Florida area. You'll find it on the mature leaves and look like white cotton spots. I had it on my Little Gem magnolia. Mine came with the tree from the nursery. Know that it doesn't fall off the leaves when treated and dies. You have to scrape the shell. If it is dry and flaky, they are dead.
I got an Elizabeth magnolia that's eat up with mag scale. I bought it thinking that the cucumber tree lineage would keep it scale free but no. Then I'd seen that it bloomed later than all the saucer types but no it's the same time. Then the last disappointment from my understanding it was supposed to be a dull yellow but no it's white. Lol the only thing I like is the columnar structure it's a perfect pyramid. Ima try and save it but it's too big and literally covered in scale so I'm not holding my breath.
The Magnolia 'Elizabeth' growing at the JCRA just started opening up this week, where the saucer magnolias hit their peak last week and the week before and are now starting to fade. The 'Elizabeth' here is indeed a dull yellow; there's a very real possibility you got a mislabeled plant!
@jcraulstonarb it's possible it was mislabeled but it does have to columnar shape like the cucumber tree. It doesn't matter which hybrid it is cuz if I can't get the scale off it it's dead.
Thanks for this video! I recently purchased the serendipity one and I’m excited to plant it.
Excellent presentation! Thank you!

Wondering if Eternal Spring would supervise in Central CT? Zone 6b? My research says zone 7, but I'm wondering if that's flexible at all.
