    I once met and spoke with Henry Dreyfuss, designer of the 20th Century Limited and much else, in the 1960s. He was a visiting professor at UCLA and our industrial design class visited his home and office in Pasadena. He was one of the 3 founders of the American Industrial Design Association (with Raymond Lowey and Walter Dorwin Teague). A very cordial gentleman and warm host. I still remember the visit as if it was yesterday. Wonderful times!

    The 20th Century Limited was the premier passenger train of the old New York Central, rivaled only by the Pennsy’s Broadway Limited as they battled for dominance over the New York City to Chicago journey. Although none of the Dreyfuss Hudsons are preserved, the train’s legacy lives on in the form of the observation car from the 1948 consist, the Hickory Creek. And I know you don’t have any plans to make it yet, Mr. Lerro, but I look forward to you eventually making the Empire State Express, not that I’m asking you to.

    Used to work for the NYC in GCT in the '60s. The decline of rail travel was showing its effects and many of older railroad employees that I worked with used to refer to the 20th Century Ltd as th 20 cent limited. BTW, by then the big trains were hauled by the ex-Cleveland Union Terminal motors. The third rail is under running. not over running.

    All in all, I have to say that this video is excellent, and you did a phenomenal job on the streamlined J3a class 4-6-4s.
    I, personally, am more a fan of the 5 streamlined J3a class that had Boxpox drivers, so I was hoping to see that variation running. That being said, #5450 looks absolutely wonderful, so I can't complain.
    Also, I noticed that the Hudson pulling the James Whitcomb Riley out of LaSalle St. Station is Hudson #5445 (the first of the streamlined J3a class). So, out of curiosity, why isn't she streamlined? I'd just like to know.

    • @KLTrainz
      @KLTrainz  5 лет назад +1

      #5450 had the unfortunate distinction of being the one Dreyfuss Hudson that had a catastrophic boiler explosion while pulling the train in the early 40s. So I decided to use it as the locomotive for this promo to give it some justice, just so happens that 5450 is the first of the 5 Dreyfuss Hudsons that had the scullin disc drivers and roller bearing rods. 5445-5449 had the boxvox drivers. A version is included with the set. For the time that this promo is to take place, I don't believe the Dreyfuss Hudsons were assigned to any other train besides the 20th Century Limited, I could be wrong through. I figured that's why you see the nonstreamlined engines throughout the promo.

    • @razgrizaceblaze259
      @razgrizaceblaze259 5 лет назад

      @@KLTrainz First, thank you so much for responding back.
      Second, thank you for that information regarding #5450. I had forgotten that, and it's always good to learn more history.
      Third, I am aware that #5445-5449 (the first 5 of the streamlined J3a class) had Boxpok drivers, and #5450-5454 had Scullin Disc drivers. I just appreciate the aesthetic of the Boxpok drivers a little more, but I do respect you for giving #5450 her time in the spotlight.
      Fourth, I think you could be right that the Dreyfuss Hudsons weren't assigned to any other train besides the 20th Century Limited, but I'm no expert on that. That being said, if I understand the facts correctly, #5445-5454 were delivered in their streamlining, and (with the exception of #5450) they kept their streamlining until after WWII. If that is the case, then I'm still a little confused why #5445 is shown without her streamlining in the promo. [I'm not trying to be annoying. I'm just very attentive to details, and I'm trying to understand this.]

    • @KLTrainz
      @KLTrainz  5 лет назад

      @@razgrizaceblaze259 I obviously didn't pay attention to what numbers the non-streamlined J3a's had in the video. My older J3a's have auto running numbers, including the 10 the Dreyfuss' had, so it by coincidence it randomly assigned that engine one of the Dreyfuss' numbers. Guess it's too late to change it now lol.

      @@KLTrainz OK. Well, that explains everything now. Thank you for helping solve that.
      Still, I think you did wonderful job with both the video and with the streamlined J3a class.
      Do you think there is any chance we might get a quick little video of one of streamlined J3a class with Boxpok drivers in action? If not, that's OK. I just figured it couldn't hurt to ask.

  • @allegheny48

    Great video and you did a wonderful job depicting the 1938 Century and Dreyfuss Hudson. However I did notice one small inaccuracy. At 10:52 you show track pans at Conneaut, OH. Conneaut never had track pans. The closest track pans to Conneaut were located some 40 miles west in Painesville, OH. The NYC had track pans at Rome and Tivoli, NY and Lydic, IN to name just a few locations. Thanks for all your hard work. It was a pleasure to view.

    • @KLTrainz
      @KLTrainz  5 лет назад +2

      According to the NYC's listing of Trackpans between Harmon and Chicago, Track Pan #12 was located at MP. 545.1, and notes it was 5.0 miles east of the Conneaut Station in Springfield. That's why the narration said "approaching" Conneaut. Here is an image of what I used for reference: i.imgur.com/jbIeod5.jpg
