    I am trying to set up my Canon EOS XS to shoot with Neewer slave units, and sometimes the setup works great. Other times ... without my changing anything, they don't fire. I think that it may be that I am not in the right mode, but I cannot find any information on what mode to use and make the proper adjustments. I understand that this camera is not designed for use with studio lights, but I would like to see if I can get it to work before deciding to purchase a new camera... reuse, repurpose, recycle, right?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  Год назад

      It's almost certainly a settings issue. It SHOULD be compatible with studio lights with the right settings. Ultimately, cameras don't really care what kind of flash is attached. First thing I'd try is setting the camera to full manual operation and setting the shutter speed to the flash sync. Then try the flash setup again. If it works then we know the issue is related to the settings you were trying. I'm going to guess you have the camera in either P, A, S, or a scene mode and, if yes, then those partial- to fully-automatic modes will affect flash triggering in different ways depending on the specific mode. For studio lighting, since you'll have complete control over everything, shooting in full manual operation will give you better and more consistent results anyway.

I get some of the options on the menus, but not all of the ones shown in the video. I definitely have the Rebel XT. The bottom says DS126071. Is this a different model maybe?

    Omgs thank you for this!!!!
    But I have questions though
    1. Is it normal to only see black photos in M, Av and Tv mode at night?
    2. Why A-dep and P takes too much time to shoot also its so blurry when I hold it?
    3. Why I cant adjust the shutterspeed in P mode?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  2 года назад +2

      Thank you!
      1- Yes if your shutter speed is too slow for the camera to record light. At night, you'll need LONG shutter speeds. A star trails image will be dozens of 30-second exposures stacked together in post. A cityscape might be a full 30 seconds. You'll also need a tripod.
      2- Because the camera is making decisions about the exposure for you. You can make the exposures shorter with a higher ISO or more light. If you're inside, for instance, or it's night, then the exposures will be very long.
      3- Same as above. In P mode the camera decides what to do. There's a section in this video (linked in the description) that describes how each shooting mode works.

      Shoot in green box for a day or two just to get a feel of the handling, then try P, A, and S. After a few weeks of playing around with those, try out M mode. 13:30 I really wanna know why I shouldnt push it past 400 in more detail :P I found this camera in my mums basement, i was never into photography but somehow and Im so exited to experiment with Iso-Aperture-Shutterspeed now. I love that you explain some concepts in this video aswell. I bought new batteries and a 8gb disk. I dont care its 8megapixels. But i do care about iso and i wanna know whyyyyyyy David why is it not smart with older cams like this to push it past 400?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  Год назад +2

      :D For ISO, it's because the old hardware and amplification infrastructure and algorithms in the old DSLRs were not nearly as good as they are today. I'll shoot my A7 IV at all kinds of ISOs and it handles them well. With cameras like this, if you push past 400, you may find the color noise too strong and want to convert them to black and white.
