  • "What We're Given"
dedicated to Cameron A Griffin (1990-2012)
Consider it legitimate: life is only difficult.
Please explain, without the pain, this strange and awful ritual.
Although I know one day I'll go,
    this sadness seems habitual.
Tears may seem, perhaps to be
the only way one finds to breathe.
Such pain and strain at just a name,
that all of creation falls under the blame.
    Happiness, I must confess
is not my will; now strive for less.
Don't want to live, don't want to die,
don't want to have to say "goodbye."
But still, I know, we both must go.
I trust, although, with joy comes woe.
Wish God would say which way to go:
Find hope to sew this open heart closed.
Through you, I can see, that the Earth, it still breathes
Never will cease, like the wind through the trees.
You always live on through fond memories
and the lives of your friends, now living for thee.
