Great video. I'm looking into powder coating my RAV4 factory OEM wheels and its the first time I've ever gone for painting any wheel. General question I have is how safe is it to do this to aluminum wheels? As I understand the wheel gets heated to 350f+ so does that impact wheel integrity or can weaken the wheel. Looked up online with very mix results so just looking for some expert opinions/comments. My specific usage is just general vehicle use.
I just had a used car dealer powder coat my gmc 22” chrome wheels. They left the center GMC logo uncoated. Is it possible to coat the center logo to make it consistent black and make the appearance smooth and seamless? Or will you notice the difference of the second job so to speak.
Good day Sir, I am very appreciative for your in-depth tutorial on powder coating. I have a dilemma. I have a 1978 Datsun 280Z in which I am completely customizing. I would like to get your unbiased opinion on CHROME PLATING THE INTAKE MANIFOLD, FUEL INJECTION RAIL,VALVE COVER, FRONT TIMING COVER, AND THERMOSTAT HOUSING. ( I put in caps to emphasize these particular items) I’m curious if chrome plating items would encapsulate heat or should I just have the items professionally powder coated? Your suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
I want to powder coat my wheels a gloss black and I was told for the first few months to not even clean with anything other than soap and water lastly I wanted to ceramic coat the wheels right away and I was told that I have to wait months before I coat them . Is this true ?
Hello, I am doing a wheel restoration shop in South Korea. This is not the channel of union rim, but can I get an answer? Why don't you choose only one between acid dipping and sandblast, but why do you use both together? I wonder why you peel it off with chemical dipping before sandblasting. Isn't sandblast enough to peel off? And I wonder what kind of equipment is that looks like a waterfall with water flowing in the back when spraying the powder coating. I don't know if you can give me an answer, but I watched the video about the wheel that you uploaded very significantly. Happy New Year!
I bought some Vossen wheels that are powder coated in house. Day one of driving I already have a chip on one wheel. I saw a very small, what I believed to be road tar, on the wheel and I picked it off and the coating came off with it leaving a chip on the finish. Is this typical for powder coated wheels? I hope not.
@@gtstaples9720 Verfiy they are real...just because it is a dealer does not mean they are not pulling a fast one on you. Match #'s with Vossen if possible. Be prepared for the dealer to say you swapped it out. It's a dirty business when a lot of money is involved. How much did you pay? Any pics online?
@@anthonyboria5738 People have done this in the past. The thin powdercoat layer compresses with movement and introduces slight movement to a critical mating surface (tight tolerances.) Over time, the lug nuts can became loose. You will also get a slight imbalance and it might not drive as smoothly since you do not re-balance the hub. The coat will not be applied perfectly evenly. Small amounts of the powder, over time will also come off and get on the brakes and rotor. There are many reasons why it is not a good idea and why it is never intentionally done by any professional. The space shuttle Columbia had a failure of a single mating surface due simply to very cold temps on launch day and look out that ended. That hub will experience freezing cold in the early hours and it will warm up. Expansion and contraction. Bottom line- don't do it. If you did already, have it removed.
The shop that im getting it done at is actually taking off the studs there not coating the them just the hub itself and its in the rear hubs im coating so they actually sit behind the brake dust sheild I believe I need to double check that so your theory or evidence suggest that the coating comes off over time with heat and cold and causes un even mating surface if im understanding you! Correctly? This is my lexus is300 02 2jz vehicle thought I do this because im getting the hole rear pretty much coated all suspension components and I'm tired of these parts rusting even brake dust sheild so this was kinda my approach I believe the shop im working with hopefully knows what your saying and will hopefully do it right or not idk first time im doing this so Maybe I'll contact them and ask more questions on this but again I believe my hubs go through the back of my brake dust sheild and just the studs come through it gona double if im correct so it's like the hub is protected by the brake dust sheild or e brake sheild witch ever its called believe they are both one in the same thing..but yeah I'll double check on that..and get back to you!
I have an older bike, 99 Suzuki GSXR 750 X that came with bone white wheels. Every single time I apply chain lube to my chain, which is often, I end up with 3000 black dots of chain lube on the rim. I got frustrated and just used a rattle can to paint my rims and after a few times of using VARASOL to remove the oil from the chain lube, I have removed the paint. I have spilled brake fluid on my front rim and it has eaten through ALL the paint coating down to the bare aluminum, but I assume the sandblasting will fix the exposed aluminum before coating. Here is my question: Can I use solvents to clean a powder coated rim of oil? .. I know that anything abrasive is bad for powder coatings, but what about solvents. I also want white with the highest gloss possible.
@daquanjohnson4298 well as long as it’s in a shop that shouldn’t be an issue. I’m actually getting some wheels done this weekend and I’ll be sharing that soon!

Is the powder coating chemically resistant also?
Honestly so much of this is personal preference. I would go with powder coating personally as I like the finish options you have with it.
It is chemically resistant as well!

It’s charcoal grey. Just recently had my stock charcoal grey to gloss black powdered

Not typical, sounds like a flaw in the finish.

Not sure tbh but wouldn’t it wear down due to friction?
Bad idea. NO.

What is the average price to have a set of four 20” wheels powder coated?
Anywhere between $900-$1200 starting
@@carswithsondurenDang better off just buying new wheels
Do you need to plug the holes on the wheels

Where some PPE please.
Where do you live that its cheaper to paint than powder coat lol. That has not been the case for every place Ive got quotes from.
Interesting most places I ever got quotes painting is much more expensive.
@@carswithsonduren
What do u consider cheap ?
Quotes I’ve been getting for painting are like $2000 CAD.
Powder coating is definitely cheaper.
