    I know it’s a long shot but could you shed some light on why did the painter decided to use a Flesh Wash + medium to wash the metal? Wouldn’t a Transparent Brown/Red mix work better due to its ability to retain more of the metallic shine (particularly in the raised areas)? My guess is because they wanted to darken the gold as much as possible, but in that case then an ink/darker metallic added to the base layer would have been a better option. Maybe they wanted the dark areas to be super matte, but I feel that takes away from the optical illusion of looking at a real metallic object…

      Not chalky at all. Metallics have a bit more texture due to the actual flake in them, and drybrushing can add some too, but those are the trade-offs for quick workups like this that can put armies on the table in short time.
