Unfortunately I couldn't complete the planned route due to feeling unwell. Turns out I picked up a tummy bug and all that goes with it and an uncomfortable saddle added to things which was causing me further issues'! I shall be swapping out the seatpost for a suspension seat post as my lower back took a hammering especially on the canal towpath and I'll also be changing the saddle for something more comfortable probably an SMP. Visiting the barrows is always a delight, they are a lasting legacy to this country's Neolithic past despite the fact that most have been rifled through. Stoney Littleton was a new barrow for me to see and of the three it goes back further than the others around 15 meters with 6 transept chambers, You have to stoop to get in though.
I am always amazed at just how much you manage to pack into your week Sandy. I am also pleased to see that you listened to your body when it was telling you that you needed to rest up. 🙂
Simon, I had no alternative but to bail on this one, I couldn't have gone much further. When I got home I went straight to bed but soon afterwards all hell let loose, heavy sweats, diarrhea and vomiting and this morning at 3 AM I was drenched in sweat. Fell back to sleep and woke at 6AM, had a shower and took my dogs for a walk and I'm almost back to full health again now......
You made the right call there, Sandy. I honestly don't know how you do it. I'd struggle on an e-bike. Great to have good friends like you have. Cheers,🙂👍🚴♀️🏕️
Another wonderful video Sandy, the beauty of the Wiltshire countryside never, ever seems to disappoint👍👍👍. So glad that you are alright, what a trooper. Nice to see Dave cycling with you. Dickie to the rescue, such a special friend. Looking forward to seeing you and Dave back on your bikes and showing us the rest of the barrows. Take care of yourself, get all rested up. Stay safe and well. Judy🇨🇦🇨🇦
Cycling in trousers!...no wonder you're backside was hurting!! Padded shorts would certainly help, and less drag. I'm an even older old fogey than you!! Looked an interesting ride, TFS cheers Alistair 👍
Hi Sandy,it’s knowing when to pack in & live to fight another day,you made the right call,I love the new bike, you have two great mates in Dave & Dickie Mint, atb & hope you soon feel back on form,Colin P.👍
Hope you are on the road to recovery Sandy...great to see Dave out again and Dickie the legend...really enjoyed the video though you definitely didn't look well. Very best wishes.
My word that Planet X is a light bike (the way forward indeed) nice setup for Dave aswell, great tent pitch, and weather, sorry you are not well but yes sometimes you can over do things, great video and thanks for sharing Sandy 👏 👋
Sandy, something I have learned on my LDW is to listen to your body. You can do more damage if you don't!!! Please rest, we will all be here waiting for you once you have recuperated and recovered!
Thank you, Sandy, for another great presentation of the English countryside. I wish you a full and speedy recovery. I loved the birdsong in the morning. Best wishes from Melbourne.
Hi there Sandy and thanks for another great history lesson and great footage of your adventures. You are probably right when you say that you have done too much all at once. You now need to listen to your body and treat yourself to a rest. Take care of yourself and see you soon M 8.😊😊😊
Hope your getting better now ,when your in your 60s you got to slow down!! Its that simple mate ! Thanks for the video very lovely part of england where you were.
@@WiltshireMan take it easy , have a good rest, and it might be a good idea to get checked out by your doctor especially as you’ve had a bit of a bug awhile, yes the heat was all of a sudden after cool rain and you were doing a big distance, perhaps next time you go out use your motorcycle to give you a rest from cycling 👍🏍️
Hi Sandy, shame you were unwell and had to shorten your adventures. Always good to have good mates though, good old “Dixi Mint” coming to the rescue.👍. You will go messing about with all these dead people you never no what they died of. 😜😜😜
Hi Charles, I'll be back on the bike soon. The good news is I'm feeling a lot better and no hip pain whatsoever but I've got a touch of prostatitis so I'm going to change the seat post to a suspension seat post and get another SMP saddle as I find that one the most comfortable sofar
Sandy - you have to be so careful. I over trained when I was 29 and ended up with an infection that not only put me out of work for three months it also resulted me in hospital. I had to be looked after by a consultant who told me that had I not seen him after lying in bed ill with the runs for weeks he would “ have needed to revive me “ . The signs are always there but they can be mistaken for nothing and followed by an urge to do more cycling . You should rest and drink clean water ( not tap water and stop using that water filter - remember that it will not filter out everything like some chemicals) for a number of weeks I thought how ill you looked Sandy - so force yourself to rest even if you start to feel ok give it plenty of time for your body to recover Best wishes Rob
Thanks Rob, it's taken me around 3 days to get properly rehydrated again, I was very ill for a while but feeling a lot better now. Hopefully I will have learned something from this!!
Hope you are feeling better now Sandy. Both Gillianthepillion and I were a little worried for you. Love all your adventures on and off the bikes. Plus. Well done Dickie 😎👍
Excellent again Sandy amazing really ,,, welcome back hope that you are OK now and stay OK .... ......Me ...... I wont be cycling no more struggling to walk now How things change keep up the good traveling, relying on you now HI
A truly brilliant film here Sandy! Sorry that your trip was cut short. Seat issues were always my biggest problems on long bike rides. Take care ,and have a good rest.
Well what a lovely ride Sandy . I lived in Radstock as a boy growing up and used to cycle a loop around through Stony Littleton and wellow then up to peasdown st John and back down in Radstock . Brought back many memories seeing that ..Thank you so much ❤
First off, I hope you get feeling better. Your drone footage is always excellent, and I always love your music. You inspire me to get out on my bike more often. I'm 76 next month, so need that inspiration.....Lol
Hi Leroy, We old guys have to stick together and keep encouraging each other. Glad you enjoyed the video. I shall be 62 later this year so I hope I can still be cycling and camping when I get older. I think cycling will be good for the body and the soul:)
Always good to have a plan B Sandy. Its really easy to overtrain and not let the body recuperate. Loving the new bike though. Ive got an ally framed Ribble CGR which is move of an 'all road' bike rather than gravel focused. They are really great for crunching the miles. Hope you get better soon and give it plenty of time to recover.
Well done, Sandy. I am constantly amazed and a bit jealous at the opportunities you have for cycling. I’d be hard pressed to get anything else done besides being on the bike enjoying the countryside.
It's great to have friends, especially with a van ! Take it easy Sandy, and enjoy a rest. I use my ebike a bit more now for similar reasons. Anyway, you had great weather, with some fantastic shots. We'll done and thanks for sharing. Atb Grant 👍.
Loved the lovely ladies that joined you for a brew and I also agree that bridge really is a thing of beauty, thanks for taking us along for the ride. Wishing you well, Sandy, here's to a speedy recovery.
Sixty miles is an ambitious number for more mature adventurers including myself!, especially when climatising to a new bike. You made the right call. Live to fight another day.
Take things easy, Sandy, but again, try to do a little more as we all stiffen up, RUclips can wait a few days until you feel fit enough to start again. I'm sure after a good rest, you will be ready to get back out there on your saddle. 🚲 🎥 🌳 📷 ❤❤❤❤
Cheers Darren, I think I ate something nasty and all the continual cycling wore me down a bit. I've had a couple of days rest and almost back to full fitness again:)
A good decision to get Dickie to pick you up. On two wheels a moments adverse reaction could have led to a further fall etc. We are so lucky to have so many quality neolithic sites to visit and persoanlly document. Another great vid Sandy👍👍👍
Hi Ralph, Thankfully I'm feeling a lot better today but I couldn't have cycled much further. Legs were fine but I was starting to feel queasy (sick) and a touch of prostatitis due to the torture inflicted by the saddle, thats also clearing up thankfully!
Thanks for taking us along again, what a great journey with the long barrows! Shame you had to cut it a bit shorter than you’d have liked but that’s how life is sometimes. So nice to see those fine gents Dave and Dickie Mint too, you are blessed to have such good friends. How about another Brompton ride with Dave - still my favourite of your bikepacking rides, one side of the country to the other, awesome 👍🏻🙂
Yes, that was a cracking ride and the Brompton proved itself very capable, will no doubt do another Brompton vlog at some point hopefully sooner rather than later. I am indeed blessed to have such good frinds:)
Just read one of your replies, very ill all night up till 3.00am, & then up at 6.00am to walk the dogs, 😂. You are one of life’s toughest WM. Thanks for the video & stay strong 👍👌
Gee Sandy, you’re too hard on yourself, your content on here is first class, and to be honest I’m happy to see you on one of your motorbikes doing a running commentary of the gorgeous scenery along the way. At least that way I don’t feel so guilty sitting on my butt watching you out and about lol. Whereas I feel guilty watching you pushing yourself so hard on those hills, while I’m in a comfortable chair. Hope you’re feeling better soon, so you’re able to enjoy the better weather. 😊
What a wonderful effort Sandy, we have to recognise our limits and work with them, you did well and what beautiful cinematography, lush gentle country, and fabulous edit too. Take good care, you'll be out on your terms again soon. Harry
Stunning, thankyou I am unable to get there right now, and have missed that ceiling so much. You know I think that long barrow is one of the best places in the UK. A wise decision, you HAVE to listen to your body. To carry on would have been foolish. Even though you say you are much better now, give yourself extra time to get over it properly and completely. Those hills will be there another time, for now REST then rest some more....
I think I'll listen to your words this time Bry, I'm going to give the body some good rest for a few days:) Glad to have brought West Kennet Long Barrow to your screen:)
Good call! It’s all about enjoyment at our age. As mentioned before, Brooks 17 is a popular touring saddle & seems to work for me though breaking in can vary from person to person. I’m just waiting for the delivery of a Brooks flyer (sprung B17) for my mob. All the best
Well you achieved a lot more than men half your age, good effort and no doubt there’ll be more attempts when you’ve sorted the saddle and cured the ailments. Always enjoy your uploads, such variety.
My dear fellow, please do take care of yourself, these past few months you've been pushing yourself hard, some of those wet weather cycling trips looked pretty gruelling , you aren't a young man & I say that with the greatest respect, so you will have to learn to pace yourself, we'd rather see the tortoise than the hare, in fact you could mix up your excursions between bike & motorcycle, but at the end of the day we all want to see your excellent videos & yourself in one piece. God bless & keep you with very best wishes ,wiltsman fan!
That was a lovely ride, and you covered loads of miles even though not well. I haven't even begun my tours this year due to ill health so you did great.
Great to see Dave and Dickie in one vid! Very important to listen to your body Sandy, you definitely saved yourself from 'driving it deeper' Loved the video and your beautiful new bike👌🖤KTF🙏
I was in a bad way Marty but have recovered quickly. When I got home I went straight to bed, got up later with diarrhea, and vomiting, then managed to edit this video but over the day but was in and out of bed most of yesterday. Last night I woke up at 3am covered in sweat, ringing wet, fell back to sleep and woke this morning, had a shower and I'm as fit as a fiddle again:) Mandy has had to put fresh bed sheets on the bed though!
Been thro the stinging arse scenario on a few occassions. I found the best solution apart from a saddle that works, is liberal application of antiseptic ointment to the right area. The best sort is one that acts as a lube and a disinfectant. Thanks for the tour and the history.
I'm the same age as you mate, still cycling 1000s of miles a year, however I have learned to leave it longer bewee rides to recover. Resing is also an activity and injuries take a looooooooong time to heal! Take it easy.
Well there’s not a chance your’d caught me having lunch with those cows. 🐄. They seem to know if its corn beef sandwiches 🤣. We really are lucky to have such a green & pleasant landscape to enjoy. Love new bike, don’t ever apologise for not making it. I couldn’t have done it at my age as I’m not fit enough. Do you think you caught a bug from the river water? DO take it easy & get some R&R. I wish you a speedy recovery from the bugs you currently have, I’m in the throws of this 100 days cough. It’s blasted nuisance. All the best - Andy
Hi Andy, I have no idea where the tummy upset came from, don't think it was from the river as that water was taken close to the source and I was starting to feel queasy before I got to that point. Hope you soon feel better. I'm a lot better now:)
Advice for saddles. Extra padding is not the way to more comfort. It will put pressure on places you don't want. Look tor one that fits your "seat bones." They vary in width. Once I found my width it made a night and day difference! Really good video, really enjoyed it. You travel further than most. Get well soon! :)
Hey Sandy, i bet its your rear end that is hurting on that bike. Everytime i get on mine, the saddle dont like me sitting on it so it gives me a great pain. I have a board with is called a Brookes leather saddle, and it is very very hard!! Keep going Sandy, good videos my friend.
Thanks for the great video. Health always comes before youtube and you definitely did the right thing, you had the right person called Dave with you there. Thumbs up to Dickie for rescuing you. 👍
Hope you heal soon Sandy, take it easy fella, padded shorts and chamois cream might help. Happy new bike too, I have the Goldrush from PX, changed the saddle and put Redshift stem on for a smoother ride
I have a Suntour stem on my MTB, I'd love a Redshift but they are a bit more pricey so will probably go with another Suntour for the Tempest plus a different saddle probably another SMP as I got on OK with that saddle on the MTB
Great video, even when you didnt complete it! I once adjusted my saddle by no more than 1cm and after an hours ride I was in agony and couldnt walk properly for days! I prefer a rock hard saddle like the Brooks B17, but ride a couple of road bikes with "knife edge" fizzik saddles and never have a problem.
When you've rested and feel better , friends and I have got the train to Bath with our bikes (front or back for bikes) then cycled along Kennet and Avon canal towards Marlborough way. You can stop along the way for coffee ,food. We have got off at honeystreet and also toward Marlborough then through savernake to chiseldon via old rail line. 50 miles plus maybe.
Ahh now it makes sense , mini adventures are the way forward Sandy. We ain’t young bucks anymore , need to slow down man and more of a chilled pace. A great trip nonetheless but heat and hills no good for any man. On my longer rides we always have a train station relatively close by in case of bail outs , but you had your own rescue sorted . Just changed my saddle again , like you can’t seem to find the right one 😂😂😂 Atb Dave
Hi Dave, I've struggled when hiking finding decent footware that didn't cause me blisters and now cycling the Achilles heel is the bloody saddle! The best one I've tried sofar is the SMP with the large cutout so I'm probably going to buy another for the tempest together with a suspension seat post. My legs were fins, I could have cycled on all day if needed but it was mostly the saddle discomfort that got me (Prostatitis) just starting to get better now!!
Nice to see you and Dave back out on your bikes shame you didn't make it the heat wouldn't of helped long you two were OK stay safe and stay healthy one life enjoy blessed be
Best wishes for a speedy recovery Sandy - Broadly agree with most commentators except about using your motor bike - Do you agree that motorbikes chew up the trails and bridal ways just as bad as a 4x4 atv - love your content, makes me home sick, my home town is Newbury, now I live in the Philippines. I'm 70 and still ride my Giant Fathom hard tail. No car or motorbike.
Hi David I love both cycles and motorcycles, perhaps for me the bicycle offers more freedom. I would say that horses and 4X4 vehicles are the greatest chewer uppers buy yes of course a motorcycle will do more damage than a bicycle. Don't forget though that these trails have been here for perhaps ten thousand years and we can still ride along them.
It’s stil a brilliant video I did the devils stair case last week stopped for lunch and ended up with food poisoning when you get to a certain age it knocks you for six.😊🏍
Well you achieved a lot more than men half your age, good effort and no doubt there’ll be more attempts when you’ve sorted the saddle and cured the ailments. Always enjoy your uploads, such variety.
Thanks, I hope to have a new seatpost and saddle for the new bike later this week:)
Great video.
Fanx Shaun:) I'll look after myself
That was a lovely ride, and you covered loads of miles even though not well. I haven't even begun my tours this year due to ill health so you did great.
Great to see Dave and Dickie in one vid! Very important to listen to your body Sandy, you definitely saved yourself from 'driving it deeper' Loved the video and your beautiful new bike👌🖤KTF🙏
I was in a bad way Marty but have recovered quickly. When I got home I went straight to bed, got up later with diarrhea, and vomiting, then managed to edit this video but over the day but was in and out of bed most of yesterday.
Last night I woke up at 3am covered in sweat, ringing wet, fell back to sleep and woke this morning, had a shower and I'm as fit as a fiddle again:)
Mandy has had to put fresh bed sheets on the bed though!
Get better soon Sandy. Plenty of rest and porridge 😊. Really enjoy your filming, thank you.
Brave effort.
Thats makes sense:) Thanks
Fantastic to have solid mates!
Thanks, some great guys for sure:)
Well done Sandy, pointless totally knackering yourself, safety first always. You'll be back on the bike in no time and doing what you love doing.
Well done chum.. you’re an inspiration….. what you achieve is amazing!!
Hahaa thanks Colin
Hope you feel better soon Sandy. Make sure you rest up mate and don’t overdo it.
I know the route well:)
Hope you get rested up and fully recovered Sandy.
Ive only watched the opening bit with Dickie and Dave… very funny. You were like a naughty schoolboy. Brilliant 😂😂
brilliant
Nice to see you and Dave back out on your bikes shame you didn't make it the heat wouldn't of helped long you two were OK stay safe and stay healthy one life enjoy blessed be
I got very dehydrated Francis
Best wishes for a speedy recovery Sandy - Broadly agree with most commentators except about using your motor bike - Do you agree that motorbikes chew up the trails and bridal ways just as bad as a 4x4 atv - love your content, makes me home sick, my home town is Newbury, now I live in the Philippines. I'm 70 and still ride my Giant Fathom hard tail. No car or motorbike.
Hi David
I love both cycles and motorcycles, perhaps for me the bicycle offers more freedom.
Feel better 😊
Great video rest up there's always another day .
Nice film, Sandy. Some stunning scenery again. I have one of those Lanshan tents, super light and very easy to put up. 👍
Totally enjoyed-Thank you Sandy
I thought you would enjoy this one James:)
@@WiltshireMan So true-Thank you Sandy
Sorry to hear this Sandy, look after yourself and get strong again
No need to apologise really enjoyed the video hope you’re feeling better soon
