- ** ** For this Volvo XC40 AWD test we just wanted to see how it reacted under slippery condition. The car was equipped with regular summer tire and under the snow, there was a thin layer of ice that once compacted made the surface slippery! The transmission also constantly changed gears even when fixed in manual mode so we always lose momentum...
The arrival of the XC40 means that for the first time in its history, Volvo Cars has three new, globally available SUVs in what is the fastest growing segment of the automotive market! Depending on where you live, you can for a FWD Volvo XC40 or an AWD one!
Volvo’s research into and testing of AWD systems goes back more than 20 years. The first AWD Volvo car to go into serial production was the Volvo 850 Estate, launched in May 1996! Advances in AWD technology mean that improved handling, stability and traction continue to provide a confident, agile and enjoyable driving experience while reducing fuel consumption. The Volvo XC40 AWD is a compact and lightweight coupling (BorgWarner Gen. 5) distributes the engine’s power between the front and rear wheels. Under normal, dry conditions practically all of the power is distributed to the front wheels. The system constantly calculates the need for torque to the rear wheels and can instantly redistribute up to 50 percent of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels. When at a standstill, a full all-wheel drive is always engaged to prepare for maximum traction during acceleration.

It performs very capable with the summer tires - with good winter tires it would be absolutely NO PROBLEM !

6:06 - wow, that's awesome. I just put a Volvo XC40 T5 AWD on order a couple of days ago and was happy to see this. And yeah, summer tires are completely useless even in light snow. My summer tires will be on the same 20" as in the vid and I'll have studded Nokian Hakka 9's on 19" inch rims for the winter. Great video, thanks! :-)
I have one in the USA with large wheels and it came with Pirelli All Seasons. Must be market dependant
Tyres is summer not winter what u expect.

Turning on a fog light when the wheel is turned just makes the car look like its lights are messed up.
Scott I agree. I turned corner illumination off on my XC60 because of that.
Why summer tyres? Normal people use allyear or winter tyres to do driving/tests in such condition!

Why not use All Weather ( not all season ) or winter tires?
Makes no sense unless you are showing the strain that can be put on the AWD system and transmission.
No winter tires on it completely sucks.
It's really a test of how rubbish summer tyres are in the winter.
Well At least you know that you might not get stuck without winter tires while driving in this car on snow

Using Summer tyres to do this type of review does not do this vehicle any justice in showing its true capability. Has the driver just passed their test. Waste of time!
A lot of slipping wheel!!! The locking system lacks good Programming. It is a shame. If the tires doesn't have grip the system have to block and I don't see it.
Andres Pinzon this is not a diagonal test, you need to spin the tires in order to get grip

Pretty good car, very bad driver --> Did you turn off the ESC, that should help on the changing gear and losing momentum. Did you put the car in offroad mode via the drive settings button?
Why are you making this video if you have summer tires? Whats the point then? It's not even legal to drive with summer tires in the winter...

For winter tire dates... It was legal the date we filmed this :)
I initially thought it was a tire issue. But I think that it lacks a locking diff. Either center or rear and it also lacks adequate system to divide the power of the wheel or cut power to slipping wheel.
