Jungle machete. Forest axe. Simple.....
yep
True dat, well put!
I agree with you there, thing that always gets me is folks with 2lb or less axes trying to take larger diameter trees down, I say use a axe or a machete but Christ sake get bigger axes or saws for bigger wood
What about desert ? Southern California
jdaggy81 branch saw.
Machete for the jungle has been the number 1 essential for a long time, axes are more for cutting bigger trees than bamboo
Machetes also do well in chaparral environments.
Machete is incredibly useful, cut diagonally against the wood branches. Especially here in FL, a cheapo machete can slice thru even thick brazilian pepper trees (a softer wood, but if it ever gets to survival mode, those things grow absolutely everywhere and are easy af to cut if know how to cut against the wood structural makeup, do it plenty from time to time in my outdoors job)
It's mostly a question of versatility to me. Will a machete do everything that ax can do? Yes, with some difficulty in the heavy chopping area. Can an ax do everything that a machete can do? Yes, but with great difficulty in finer, more controlled cutting.
I choose the machete its for greater versatility.
An axe is just a lump of steel you can use the machete as two blades by grinding the first half differently and only using it for, say knife tasks while you leave the front shape less razor sharp for chopping
I'll take axe with a belt knife. I don't know anybody that would truly use a machete for fine cutting. In the jungle, I'll go machete with belt knife.
well as it goes axe is for northern woodland and a machete is for southern humid climate like jungle
Machete works all around better then an ax for jungle vines bush bamboo &can be used with a baton to beaver cut into bigger material But in the woods I would use an ax hands down myself
In the jungle, the machete. In the north woods, the axe. Thanks Gabe for the video.
A man can live in the woods with a knife, but with an axe, he can live like a king
Depends on where he lives
Tom Hanks opened thousands of coconuts with an ice skate. Just saying...
Tom Hanks is an actor in movie. Just saying
Ice skates are 13" blade machetes.
@@chuckburlingame6037 it's obviously a joke

The sprouted coconut contains the best part, the coconut "bread", that you needlessly threw away.
*The hatchet and axe shine more when you think **_building,_* and I don't mean quick survival shelter. Chop out a canoe, get enough wood for us to survive the winter here, etc.
*Group encampment style traversing* (such as Lewis and Clark) means tent stakes, possibly wagons/carts needing building style repair tasks and larger amounts of wood to keep a camp warm, so chopping down a tree becomes a win vs gathering all the nearby brush, then having to travel further and further from camp. (though a variety of tools will be ideal overall)
*Denser foliage* pushes toward a machete.
*Open dry forests* present easy wins for an axe, where a piece of deadfall wood may chop up easily and then the fire task isn't constant gathering.
*Quick, low effort survival shelters* tend to push for a machete, but that is only true if reasonable brush, bamboo, etc are available. If all you have is large trees, the axe is more ideal.
*A large group* presents an overall pace instead of individual. Chopping out an obstacle instead of going around starts to make sense.
For the Jungle the machete for sure. For the New Zealand Bush I'd go for the axe. You have reignited my love of knives!
Thanks for a great video! I would definitely prefer a machete in the jungle! The thing is where i live in Sweden, you usually don't need an axe when you're out hiking or camping. Even for survival purposes a large knife or something like the bushcraft parang will be an excellent tool! But I like to bring an axe sometimes, simply because it's fun to chop with and I like testing different tools! :)
I live in a tropical country so parang is definitely my first go to . Almost everyone have one here
I’d definitely take the machete where you live here in the northeast I’ll take the axe great video👍✌️.Ive never had a fresh coconut dry or wet it’s like living in the middle of the country and never seeing the ocean or living somewhere really warm and never seeing snow☹️love to see tools in use kinda annoying when people just show u something and don’t use it on camera
I would use The right tool for the right job what ever the job. Cool vid.
mrfixit011 thankx for the tip einstein
Nice to see this video recorded just before the Lower East Rift Zone fissures opened at the beginning of May 2018 when life in Leilani Estates was easier.
This is so relaxing
I would have both if it were me. I'm lucky enough to own both the tools in this video and love them both.
I liked them both but I'd vote for the machate. Thanks Gabe.
I'm enjoying your channel and hope your house survives the lava. I just wanted to tell you that the sprouted coconut contains utu(the pithy inside that was coconut meat) and it goes great with eggs, or mix it with some flour, onion and salt and pepper to make utu patties. It's not rotten. The amazing coconut!
mahalo
I Dont Know why, But I fucking love this channel!
instead of standing kindling on end to split with axe, lay them on their sides to split since they are smaller and you will have a much easier go at it. Safer with less misses too. although just tapping to stick to the wood is another option
I wonder what a woodsman pal would be like there, seems like it would be great for that environment/foliage.
I use a brush hook
Saludos mi amigo, buen video.
Prefiero el machete para acampar, es mas versatil aqui en el tropico. Desde Puerto Rico 👍👍👍
JAMES OUTDOORS los coquis en el background
It's worth noting that the machete busted up the bamboo less than the axe, so if you were concerned about preserving as much as possible, that would be the clear choice.
It's also obvious which is better for hammer use.
The best thing to bring to the jungle is a native with a machete. :) They are better at handling it. But I do love machetes and like axes so I almost always bring a machete or large knife instead of an ax.
I'm convinced that there are people on RUclips to that just go around disliking videos.
so true
I agree with you! You can call them trolls, dipshits or misanthropes!
a axes and machete both have there place in the field its what your a costume to using in your daily life camping or hiking id take a axes car camping and the machete for hiking but there both good its witch one you like when your in the out doors the machete tires you out less where the axes will beat you up more but for survival i would have to go with the machete all day you can use it with out it tiring you out it helps save your energy and burn less calories then the axe would the axe would burn you out quicker but a saw is better then a axes for cutting and the machete can split wood to maybe not better then a axes but ok great video gabe i did enjoy it
I’d take a hatchet with me anywhere in the US. I have a quality survival knife that can do the smaller things. A hatchet (a good one) can do just about everything you need. There is a reason humans have been surviving on axes and hatchets since the Stone Age. They work wonderfully for so many different things. Machete is just a brush clearer, it’s chopping ability can be mirrored to a slightly lesser extent with a good knife. Unless you are in the rain forest, hatchet/axe is the way to go.
Same here.
Some talk about machete being more effective than hatchet.
Not my experience. My hatchet outchops a machete or parang.
I've tested them side by side, but regarding wood (not thin branches but bigger pieces/logs) the hatchet beats them both, easily.
The conditions always determine which is the right tool. For a tropical rain forest, a machete is way more useful than an axe.
Be thankful to have either in a survival situation. Nuff said.
Machete for the win. Best all around tool.
Nope, axe way better once you start doing the hard tasks.
Have always used machete in the Amazon Jungle and axe where I live in the Northern Forest. I do carry a machete sometimes where I live but nothing can replace an axe. Also, different axes for different tasks just like I carry different machetes for different tasks. No one is as skilled with machete as the Indigenous people I know in the Amazon and no one is as skilled with an axe as are those Indigenous people I know up north, except for some of the northern Europeans like Swedes and Norwegians. Fun video, thank you!
mahalo for watching
Nui Loa!
I live in southeast Asia where there is many jungles so I would prefer machete because it has longer blade so you can cut bushes.
It is interesting that the machete won over all in its use. The ax seems to be a specialized tool for mainly shaping and knocking but really not that good at splitting as we all might assume.
It depends entirely on what you're splitting. If a log was cut then yes, an axe would win purely because of the amount of force it can put into a small area. I'm sure it's the same with a machete, but the shape of ax blade dictates heavily what it can do. if it's a heavy, fatter head, it'll be great for splitting and driving wedges, not so much for felling or cutting. There's a reason that woodsmen in the north use axes and that people in the jungle or bush tend to use a machete. Location is the biggest factor. But hey, any day spent in the wild is better than in the town
I would rather have the parang because it's cheaper and more versatile
getting a better deal with the parang
How can I not know where you are I know that sound anywhere your Puerto Rican right I'm from Ponce nice to meet you brother God bless
Winter is where an axe shines. Chop an ice hole with a machete or using it for a climbing hook on icy hills / rocks
I love your videos! I have that axe, good one.
You're funny, too!😊
Glad a Condor product was used for this video.
helps to hold it down while cutting. MUCH less bounce, less safety hazard too
Both are nice to have, and both are light enough to carry in the woods.
it's like one tool is specifically designed for handling tropical environments
I bring a hatchet, axe, maul, knife, machete, sword, chainsaw, chipper & last but not least a ferro rod
Machete...no question about it.
Parang wins every time unless all your doing is cutting down and splitting up larger firewood. What more could one ask for. " warlock " lol . another great video Gabe, thank you.
shoooots brah
It's a bit lke making a comparison like so : "Hammer vs screw driver" !!! An Axe is for splitting wood and a parang machete is for bush and jungle ;)
Well it's a weird comparison. In your situation being in a rainforest type of jungle the machete is going to be much more useful. I'm in the northern part of New York by the Adirondack Mountains. You would be able to use the machete you would have to use a baton with it to chop wood and take down small trees because we have a lot of hardwood and I'm not saying bamboo isn't hard or tough to cut it is but they both require a different type of blade. So the winner really depends on where you are. Also if I was in a desert the axe is ab solutely worthless you would get more out of Machete. And not that either one sucks but in the wrong environment you would have to put more effort into either one.
Parang on my belt and small axe in my backpack!
Why don't use the Japanese Warerstone in order to slice the paper
Condor is one of the best brands for machetes
Here in central America the machete is used to work. And to fight and kill each other.
I usually have a knife along side an axe so. Best of both worlds?
I'd put a thick heavy parang or bolo half way between a hatchet and a 2mm thin long machete of comparable weight.
I Just had a phantom smell of the coconut watching you chop the green one open.
good to see that you notice my suggestion is the condor parang a heavy machete
I listen
ironic :D
I prefer an axe to clear a path through the bush.
Cool
For me, living in Central America, that is a no brainer. A machete. They are considered king here.
Normally you expect the machete to win a test like this and the axe to maintain its edge longer
Czy warto kupić tą maczeta? nie wyszczerbia się w seku suchym drewno?
Prefer parang.
I never realised how much fibre got around some coconuts though.
It is quite obvious a matter of environment and training with the specific tool. I chopper trough thigh thick loggs quicker with an axe than a machete/big knife. But with the big knife I chop quicker through underarm thick limbs.
Disclaimer: No growing organisms were hurt during the production of this video
Kukri vs machete love the vids btw
cool
I saw a guy in mexico husk a coconut with his teeth. I think they called him Chompers.
I sometimes forget that coconuts are seeds
In indonesia we prefer Machete or we call it Golok/Parang than Axe
I'm in Northern Europe, my Gransfors axe is now retired in favour of my Bidor 12" duku chandong. Learn how to use a good Parang and its superior, the steel Bidor use is also better and HT is superior to both my Gransfors and Hultafors Axes and this is working with hardwoods - Oak, Ash, Birch etc....
no disrespect to the machete... but there's something about an axe. Evil fears the axe.
Evil fears the machete in the jungle not an axe
H.I.S Survival in the movies and fairy tales an ax always kills the witch/monster/vampire etc. I think in Europe somewhere there's a superstition about people put axe under a window to ward of evil.
of course, that's in the woods. not a lotta jungles in Europe last time I checked.
machete mo bettah brah.
Jason used a Machete and he was evil...
easily the machete, even for northern woodland (samis have been using mini-machetes for centuries, with great success). less pack weight, better for clearing brush, better at fine work and much safer to baton with than splitting with an axe. yeeea it sucks a little at splitting bigger logs, but man ive seen some nasty axe wounds... that tool demands a lot more focus and skill to stay safe with than a machete does.
You are right there friend. I still have scars to show for the axes I ever handled...
Don’t underestimate a machete also if it hits you anywhere fleshy or in a artery you will bleed perfusely
@@mvtxxxhixxrxflyphics5556 ohyes, especially these parang style ones.
My mom Will definitely kill me if she sees me open the riped coconut like that
For me it depends on the situation. If I am on the move, machete for the win. If I am at a more stable base camp type situation, more than likely I would want the axe.
Is the parang a 5160 convex ed shallow compared to your brkt's?
1070 steel convex
1075
Even in jungles if you want to create a medium to large campsite or a huge trap like a big bear Deadfall an axe is your answer, for overall usage a parang and large machete I'm good with machete but lately I'm building medium size games traps I prefer the axe.
bites in there real nice
*bounce*
As he chops through the foliage, a San Francisco Park Ranger appears and says, “Sir, why are you chopping up the plants here in Golden Gate Park?”
I prefer double kodachi swords :P
christ, dude, that's how you make kindling?
Bamboo... Worlds biggest grass.
In the jungle against standing bamboo the machete fat out weighs the axe. It cuts instead of chops.
Now do the comparison getting someone out of a wrecked car, or ripping through a door.
a Machete is the best all purpose blade
heavy ones can chop wood, sort out meat and just the tool to get through forestries
Hatchet isn't as versatile as a Machete but is better when it comes to chopping wood
Are you in puerto rico?
Witam można rysunek parang maczeta chcę zrobić samemu maczeta
I just remembered in Texas we cleared 8 acres of bushes with a push mower and two machetes
Cut down a few trees with an axe
They are both great cutting (tools) I didn’t want to say tools cuz that’s disrespectful to them
Sounds like Puerto Rico.
I swear I'm a writer not a murderer!
Say Heah Gabe, Yeah, different strokes for different folks, I my Northeastern Jungle from about now (Spring of 2018) to late Fall, I will bring a Long Knife like one of my Machetes and an Axe/Hatchet along with my Survival type knife and a Bushcraft knife fir finer work with some sort of Multi Tool on our weekender where I will pick and choose when I go out to scout out a new area. Yeah, I totally agree a clearing tool is very important, but a Hatchet like that Council Pack Axe is also very needed building shelters , fire with dead falls. Also I make sure my Survival Knife which I carry on person is dual functional, yeah, just incase I get separated from my other tool's, I can survive, so yeah, it has to be able to do some chopping, and cutting, Your absolutely correct in a Jungle the Machete rules, but in my Jungle a axe makes it a lot easier, Infact Mors Kochanski wrote, "Give a man a Knife and he can live, Give him an Axe and he lives like a King". Different strokes for different folks, Dilly Dilly.,,.p
Did Mors ever go to the jungle? His specialty was the boreal forest. Put him in the jungle and he might say machete also😮.
Did you know you can eat sprouted coconuts aswell.
Machete is better IMHO.
yep
Try a Cold Steel norse hawk
Tropical machete boreal axe desert water
What's the name of that frog he sounds pretty damn close to the frog that we have in Puerto Rico we call him Coqui 👏👍✌🍻
Machete 4 shots for cuttıng axe 7 shots
I always use machete wether im in the woods because i can clear more and its a longer blade
different tools, different purposes. Carry both
That's what I do I carry both machete and axe.
Coqui?
Machete all the way with me
