I have always found this challenging/confusing but I just te watched this and I made a point of listening and watching what you were explaining and it became clearer. My PS doesn’t work but I must try it in Procreate.👍
Learn to Draw is a fantastic resource, I've been a designer for decades and studied art formaly since I was a teen... and there were things in that book that I had never heard of before. Fantastically comprehensive. I just ordered How to Render, Keep them coming, please!
I do and yes the same basic principles apply. If you start with a tighter line drawing then for sure use the layering and preserve transparency techniques. If your drawing is really loose or you want to go for a more painterly look then this technique is not as helpful, but all the lighting and value application is the same.
Thanks Mr. Robertson that would be great. If not no problem, it's just a suggestion/idea for a tutorial. Motor cycles seem difficult to me because so many parts are exposed and the forms are not as solid. Car bodies seem solid where motor cycles have more gaps... if that makes any sense.. . Also, thanks for putting the self taught schoolism class together on reflections. I have purchased a pass to that recently. a good day, Ryan
Just per-ordered your upcoming book on Amazon. Looks like it will arrive around my birthday if the schedule holds. So looking forward to it. Thanks for the continual great work!
Thank you for you videos. Im self-taught and you provide a big inspiration and how tos. I will buy the book. Its actually bestseller nr1 in his category on amazon germany.
Thx for the tutes Scott, Your approach really helps the way my head pictures/organizes things and your Draw/Shading vids have had a greater impact on my foundation skills than any other teacher. Preordered your Design/Draw/Render book trilogy yesterday and am wondering if they will deal with any of the Complex Shadow Casting you hinted about in your shading vids. If not could you do some vids on rules of complex objects casting shadows in perspective and onto other complex objects?
thanks for the reply Scott, how about a power-tool of your choice? there could be a lot of scope for some sweet A-surfaces! I really like your bike helmet renderings in PS too!
Always love your video's. Is there a video showing how you've setup your PS brushes? Looking at the brush selection in PS can be a little over whelming as to what to pick. Top 5 brushes pre-sets you couldn't live with out?
Another amazingly great movie from the Master... I love watching these. One question Scott... do you ever go out for a beer? :) Or are you chained to the computer first thing in the morning and only set free for Lunch and Dinner ;)
Wow these are great! Thank you for uploading these. Love how you started in ballpoint. It`s kool seeing how you work in modo or zbrush but they`re so expensive. Idk... it`s just funny to see you draw in ballpoint when you got cintiqs and modo etc... Do you get bored with the technology? Or was this sketch done in some doctors office waiting room or something? I draw during church. True confessions lol.
Some questions. Did you use pressure opacity or manually controlled it? Then about sketch: Did you scan it or just take a photo of it? Would it be very bad to just take a photo of sketch (not very straight) and paint over it or shall I stick to scanning?
i noticed that in your layers tab the object that you've blocked in takes up the whole thumbnail. is there a way to adjust this to make it so? i find that my layer thumbnails are a lot smaller representation of the full canvas as opposed to just whats on the layer itself.
Photoshop brushes? I think there is still a set of my brushes available the URL listed in my book "How To Render". You can also find a bunch for a very reasonable $ via Gumroad from a lot of concept artists..
@@scottrobertsondesign Thanks! I bought both books, but I'm still studying "how to draw". Just recently I been trying to get into photoshop techniques and it seems that the brushes it's a whole thing. Thank's again for giving you the time for replying.
What kind of tutorial art books would you recommend similar to your tutorials you do on RUclips? I'm uncertain what to get to practice offline? I can't seem to find anything similar to your tutorial similar to what you show in this video.
Your best bet are my DVDs put out by The Gnomon Workshop or my reflective rendering course through Schoolism. Until my How to Render book arrives in November I do not know of any books that cover this subject well.
Scott you're honestly one of my biggest inspirations. Your tutorials are very well done, easy to follow and you show us amazing concepts. Thank you

You are very clear with your knowledge. Guess I better get to drawing.

There is a SR RUclips Vid here on his channel showing how to make custom brushes, also includes simple tips on how to manage them.
Nice one
Maybe. Not quite back yet. I'm in Taiwan now for the next 10 days.

James, designing what type of object?

nvm. right click layers tab in the grey area. these little things we learn..
Hi Scott, could you do some industrial design on a free tutorial friday? thanks!

Hi Mr. Robertson
When you get back from Shanghai could you draw a motor cycle?
best,
Ryan
Hi, Scott. Thanks for sharing. I want to ask you, where can I get a good set of brushes??
