Subways are mainly popular in countries that don't give a shit about US problems since they have enough of their own problems (Poland, Greece, Austria, Switzerland, Czech rep., Slovakia) and I don't think that majority of UK wants to hear about US politics too (so that it is not enough that the news are full of it). To make the full circle of this paradox, also USA doesn't care about The Subways since only few people shows up on their concert here compared to other countries, nor black community does care about The Subways. So for who is this song? Seems to me like too much of Twitter bubble, too much of detachment from real people living out there. Today musicians promote climate issues or racial issues or Palestine. But the truth is, majority of people doesn't really care about those topics. They need to work hard in order to feed their children or themselves. Loosing job, psychological problems like depression, anxiety, sickness, love, happiness, sadness, death, faith... Those are both positive and negative topics that people deal with on daily base. I know it may look different on the internet, but social media and internet is different world and even here, a lot of people are doing that only for looking virtuous. Just sayin'...
Well a musician can also in a non capitalistic way without trying to sell shit express their opinions? Or should the just sing what their fans want to hear bc that is what i am getting from your comment.

A friend of mine once listed 12 bands who were responsible for putting British guitar music down the toilet. Subways were one of those bands. Overly simplistic, fake emotion, no ambition, tepid. Just dreadful music, so weak and affected.
